Downing explores Paul s writings, arguing that his first approach to
pagans owed a great deal to the words, activities and attitudes of disruptive
popular Cynic teachers, critics or the Gods and the ethos of civic society.
Cynics, Paul and the Pauline Churches is unique in collecting together the Cynic
strands other scholars have discerned in Paul, and then uncovering much more.
It is controversial in its emphasis on the ascetic simplicity which for Paul was the
only faithful enactment of the faith he sought to share. It challenges the easy
self-indulgence of our western society
