Ethics in Technology: A Philosophical Study poses the query How do we think about
ethics in a technological world? This question has three facets: technological advances
create new challenges for ethics, traditional ethics may become poorly applicable
ín
a
technological world, and the progress in science and technology has undermined ethical
thinking itself. In this book, Topi
Heikkerö thematically
treats these problems, then ana-
lyzes three central approaches to the questions framed: Hans Jonas s ethics of responsi¬
bility, Albert Borgmann s phenomenological analysis of everyday life in a technological
civilization, and Larry Hickman s pragmatist philosophy of technology.
The inquiry concludes with a sketch of future directions for ethics of technology, includ¬
ing the roles of applied ethics; science, technology, and society
(STS)
studies; the phi¬
losophy of technology; and the ethnics of technology. While
Heikkerö
agrees with the
need for an interdisciplinary dialogue between these three traditions, he argues for the
primacy of philosophy of technology when discussing ethics in technology. Furthermore,
the conclusion emphasizes the role of mid-level ethics, which involve ethically pregnant
phenomena in the realm between instantaneous choices by an individual (micro level)
and questions about fundamental principles of justice and societal goods (macro level).
Mid-level ethics therefore concern habits, shared practices, and communal institutions.
The analysis in this book will be valuable not only to students and scholars in philosophy,
ethics, and
STS
but also to readers of works in sustainability studies, engineering educa¬
tion, business ethics, and policy studies.
