The Protestant ethic
—
a moral code stressing hard work, asceticism,
and the rational organization of one's life in the service of God
—
was
made famous by sociologist and political economist Max Weber. In
this brilliant study (his best-known and most controversial), Weber
opposed the Marxist concept of dialectical materialism and its view
that change takes place through "the struggle of opposites."
In Weber's view, economic forces were not entirely responsible for
producing capitalism. Religious convictions also played a significant
part in providing the motivations that drove man to work hard
—
even
in the absence of need. In their striving to overcome anxieties over
salvation and damnation, Weber maintained, the Puritans worked
hard and performed good deeds, believing these acts were outward
signs of faith and probable salvation. Ultimately, these efforts
discouraged a belief in predestination
—
that man was either saved or
doomed from the moment of birth. This attitude, according to Weber,
encouraged the growth and development of western capitalism.
