Summary
The Theory and Practice of Nondemocratic Regimes is the second sig¬
nificantly revised edition of the book
lhe
Theory and Practice of
Totalitarian and Authoritarian Regimes
(Dokořán,
Prague
2004).
Since the release of our first joint book, the theme of non-
democratic regimes has become a subject of further discus¬
sion and controversy. The issue of non-democratic regimes
is still of considerable interest and relevant research stepped
forward. The second edition of this book reflects this shift
in research. For the second edition of our book, we decided
to proceed to substantial changes. First, we added all the
necessary essentials of a scientific text and what is more, we
changed the overall concept of the publication. Although we
adopted the general structure of the text, most chapters have
now a number of new subchapters. Readers will also notice
that we have both revised and stylistically edited the text,
thus diverting from the previous textbook nature of the first
edition, adopting a more analytical approach.
New passages contain new analytical observations, some¬
times controversial in character, sometimes in opposition to
existing approaches. We hope that this new concept will be
intellectually challenging, though we are aware of the risk
of possible disagreement with some of our conclusions. On
the other hand, only the disparity in attitudes and discussion
about divergent conclusions gives sense to social sciences and
allows researchers to move forward in dealing with questions
as those analyzed in our work.
Since the interferences with the original text are so ex¬
tensive, we dare to say that we are presenting not a revised
edition of the original publication, but rather a brand new

publication.
Therefore, we also changed the title of the book,
to show a much broader range of themes presented in this
publication.
We have divided this book into eight main chapters. The
first one is devoted to terminological issues associated with
nondemocratic forms of government. The following two
chapters deal with the theory of totalitarian and authorita¬
rian regimes. The fourth chapter

is concerned with other forms of
nondemocratic regimes that defy classical dichotomy tota¬
litarianism versus authoritarianism. The fifth chapter deals
with problems of legitimacy of nondemocratic regimes. In
the sixth chapter we set off on a short excursion into political
psychology, to examine issues of authoritarian personality
and political leadership. The subsequent two chapters take
readers away from theory and focus on the practical questions
of how nondemocratic regimes function.
We first discuss the intellectual background of modern
nondemocratic regimes with respect to its various ideolo¬
gies and mentalities. Eventually we give examples of specific
countries and try to determine the nature of their regime
vis-à-vis
the analyzed theoretical concepts. Both these prac¬
tical chapters are significantly revised, especially when it
comes to the list of selected cases.
Regardless of the aforementioned changes compared to the
first edition, one thing remained unchanged. It conti-nues to
be a purely political science work that relies on theoretical
foundations and approaches. We remain committed to em¬
pirical and analytical (not normative) political scien-ce tradi¬
tions and benefit from a comparative approach.
