ANNOTATION
The book dwells upon a philanthropic activity of the American Jew¬
ish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) in Dnepropetrovsk region since
1922
till the present time.
The first chapter is dedicated to the participation of the American
Relief Administration
(ARA),
the JDC and a number of other foreign orga¬
nizations in the struggle against famine that attacked the southern prov¬
inces of Ukraine in
1921 - 1923,
including Dnepropetrovsk region (the
former Yekaterinoslav province).
The overall postwar devastation, state system of the forced har¬
vest appropriation from agricultural populations ( Prodrazverstka ), and
the fact that most of the harvest was then sent to Russia are considered in
this book as main reasons of the famine.
This chapter also touches upon the relationships of the authorities
with the assisting organizations as well as on the signed treaties and
projects. The book reveals the history of JDC creation, attaching biogra¬
phies of its founders, such as F. M. Varburg, J. G.
Shiñ
and L. Marshall.
The chapter also covers the work of JDC representative in the USSR B.
Bogen
and the JDC regional leader G. Khanis.
The second chapter illustrates the work of the American Jewish
Joint Agricultural Corporation (Agro-Joint), created by the JDC for assis¬
tance in Jews emigration to the waste lands of the South Ukraine and
Crimea in
1924-1938.
The director of the
Agro-
Joint was
I. Rozen,
the
deputy- S. Lyubarskiy. As many other local workers of Agro-Joint, he died
during Stalin repression times. Great attention is paid to the fate of the
two Jewish national agricultural colonies
- Stalindorf
and
Novozlatopoľ-
created in Dnepropetrovsk region and then liquidated in
1939.
The third chapter narrates about a cooperative work of the Jewish
Anti-fascist Committee, created at the wartime, and JDC in
1943-1947.
Invited by JDC, S. Mikhoels and I. Fefer took a long-term trip over a num¬
ber of countries. As a result, the areas of the USA, Canada, Mexico and
England were able to collect
32
million dollars, a great number of cars,
medical equipment, remedies, clothes and products to assist the strug¬
gling Soviet people. The tragic fate of the Jewish Anti-fascist Committee
members is also illustrated.
ANNOTATION
The fourth chapter reflects the unofficial role of JDC in assistance
to those who had hard times trying to emigrate from the USSR in the
1950s- 1970s,
when JDC participated in the Nativah Emigration and
Relief-in-Transit Program. The chapter applies statistic data of the Jewish
emigration to the USA, Israel and Germany in the period of
1881 - 2005.
The conclusion contains both the description of the JDC welfare
assistance in the region and its work over the revival of national identity of
the Jews in Dnepropetrovsk in
1990-2008.
It touches on the activities of
the Hesed Menachem welfare center, the Jewish Community Centre,
the Tkuma centre of Holocaust studies and many other programs per¬
formed by the JDC representative office in the region, headed first by
Shimon Strinkovsky and then his successors Menachem Lepkivker and
Amir Ben
Zvi.
