PREFACE
The idea of this publication was conceived

years ago. However, it actually
started to take shape only in the summer of
2007,
when the Member of the
Russian Academy of Sciences G.M. Bongard-Levin and its Corresponding
Members R.M. Munchaev and G.A. Koshelenko visited our expedition camp in
Phanagoria. I clearly recall how we all together
—
seeking shelter from the burning
heat in the shadow of our «staff» caravan
—
discussed the conception and structure of
the future big work on the ancient heritage of Kuban. Originally it was planned to be
written only by the members of the expedition, which employed (just as it still does) a
large number of highly qualified specialists. However, due to G.M. Bongard-Levin's
unresting activity, soon it was decided to extend the limits of the intended work and
call upon researchers from different scientific institutions specializing in various aspects
of Kuban's antiquity. While preparing the publication, the headquaters of the Volnoe
Delo
charity foundation constantly held working sessions headed by its Director-Gen¬
eral T.D. Rumyantseva, with active participation of the Ancient Heritage of Kuban
Project's Coordinator G.V. Kokunko.
The second volume of Ancient Heritage of Kuban deals with general aspects of
history, economy and archaeology of the Asiatic Bosporos. The reader may find it not
quite logical that the European part of the Bosporan Kingdom has been left out of
attention. It is indeed impossible to tear apart the single culture, to create a compre¬
hensive study of the Bosporos, which is the oldest state on the territory of modern-day
Russia and Ukraine, without taking into consideration its part located in the Crimea.
However, the authors and editors of these books did not attempt to do so. The goal
of this publication was primarily to show the place of the ancient civilization in the
history of Kuban and the whole Russia's South, to shed light on the heritage it left
for our country. Accordingly, the focus of attention was on archaeology in the original
meaning of this term, on the material and spiritual culture of antiquity. The chapters
on history and economy of the Asiatic Bosporus are essential for deeper understanding
of the ancient heritage. Without doubt, writing a comprehensive study of the Bosporan
history and culture is feasible only if the both parts of the ancient kingdom are exam¬
ined as an integral whole.
After G.M. Bongard-Levin's demise, I had to take over the duties of the Editor-
in-Chief. At this point I would like to emphasize once again that huge organizational
work done by G.M. Bongard-Levin, who managed to rally a large number of authors
to work for the common purpose and facilitated the preparation of this book for pub¬
lication.
Implementation of a project as huge as the three-volume Ancient Heritage of
Kuban is would be totally impossible without active support generously provided by
Oleg Deripaska,
to whom the whole team working on this publication would like to
express their deepest gratitude.
