THE COINAGE OF NICOPOLIS AD ISTRUM
Nicopolis ad Istrum stands out among the
other Roman provincial mint-cities on Bulgarian
territory, being the city with the greatest number
of coins
-
both as types and as respectively
attributed quantities till now. The city is
founded by emperor Trajan after the
Dacian
wars, in the beginning of II c. AC.1 Since
historical sources often confuse Nicopolis ad
Istrum with another city, bearing the same name
and founded by emperor Heraclius in
629
AC,
its location has been pointed to with substantial
differences.
The earliest reference on Nicopolis ad
Istrum is in Claudius Ptolemeus' "Geography"
(87 - 150
AC) where the city is mentioned as
Νικοπολιζ η περί Αιμον
(Nicopolis at Haemus).
Later sources call it
Νικοπολιζ προζ Ιστρον
and
Nicopolis ad Istrum in Latin (Nicopolis at the
Danube). Tabula Peutingeriana (second half of
II
-
III c
AC) marks the city at
30
Roman miles
east of
Melta
(today Lovetch) and
130
miles
west of Marcianopolis (Devnya).2 According to
data from VI
с
Nicopolis ad Istrum is situated
near the Yathrus river (today Yantra). South of
the city, as a natural defence runs the Rositsa
river which flows into Yantra
7
kilometers east
of the city.
1
Different dates of foundation of the city are met in historical researches.

Originally the city belonged administ¬
ratively to Thracia province and during
Septimius Severus
(193 - 211
AC) had been
reassigned to Moesia Inferior. Its economical
and cultural peak is during the reign of Trajan,
Hadrian, the
Antonin
and the Severus
dynasties.
Archaeological excavations in Nicopolis
ad Istrum began in
1900.
After some
interruption they have been resumed in
1945
by
Teofil
Ivanov.
Two decades later, in
1966 -
1968,
T. Ivanov
heads the excavation works as a
scientific advisor. Archaeological findings at
Nicopolis ad Istrum have been presented
continually from
1979
onwards /Ivan Tzarov
heads the excavation works/.
Coinage in the city began during
Antoninus Pius
(138-161
AC) and went on till
Gordian
III
(238 - 244
AC). B. Pick4 numbers

types of coins minted in Nicopolis ad
Istrum. Today these types are over two
thousand.
The mint-standards in Nicopolis ad Istrum
are those of Moesia Inferior, but unlike the
coinage of Marcianopolis and Dionisopolis the
denomination has not been shown with
numerical sign. The bronze alloy used for the
coins differs in composition. The smallest
denominations are quarter and half assarion,
used during the so called pseudo-autonomous
coinage. The quarter-assarion of Nicopolis ad
Istrum shows no mint name, but is attributed as
Nicopolian by the images on it and the area of
circulation.

As in other provincial coinages, the weight
of different specimens varies a lot. The present
catalogue covers coins up to denomination
Fourthy inclusive. The authors have not yet seen
numismatic material to confirm the existing of a
Nicopolian medallion.
Zeus, Hera,
Demeter,
Apollo, Artemis,
Ares, Hermes,
Dionysos,
the health deities
Asklepios, Hygieia and Thelesphorus dominate
among the images on the reverses of Nicopolian
coins. Nicopolis ad Istrum prefer the Apollo
Sauroktonos (lizard slayer) type5 for Apollo.
Helios is presented on a chariot. Priap is to be
seen mostly on small denominatios. Typical for
the coins from Nicopolis ad Istrum are the
images of Nyke, some of them of her statues or
reliefs. Numerous are the images of Serapis,
Cybele and the river god. A most valuable
source of information on the city are the
reverses presenting architectural monuments
such as a nympheon with
colonade
and arches.
Some coins of Nicopolis ad Istum present
the image of Haemus as a young half-naked
man sitting on a rock amidst trees, with a bear
and a deer by his sides. With the image goes an
explanatory text
-
the name AIMOC, as to
differentiate from the personification of the
ICTROC river deity, which is similarly
presented.
The differences in some of the images on
coins of different size do not necessarily mean
difference in denomination. Thus the olive-
wreath and the radiant crown in the portraits of

and Gordian III
on Nicopolian coins
do not show difference of denomination as it is
in the portraits of
Gordian
III minted in
Hadrianopolis.
This catalogue of Nicopolis ad Istrum
coinage is a part of a sequence of catalogues
presenting the coinage of the thirteen Roman
cities on Bulgarian territory as an attempt to
create a general classification of Roman
provincial coinage.6 The catalogues are open,
allowing attribution of the coins according to
types and addition of newly found specimens or
types. The list of coins follows a common
numeration including information on the mint-
city, the obverse and the reverse.
The catalogue number of every coin type
consists of four numerical elements. The first
element shows the mint-city (from

The fourth element is the number of every
next variety of the reverse type.
Coins have been listed in descending
order, according to denomination. The
information on every coin is given in a table of
three columns. The middle column presents the
emperor and the local administrator who issued
the coin and also reproduces both the obverse
and the reverse. The inscription and the image
on the obverse are in the left column. The
inscription and the image on the reverse are in
the right column. Photos of specimens
(available to us) are made in
1:1
scale. Type
varieties differing both in obverse and reverse
are listed separately, being reproduced in the
middle column. Different specimens, belonging
to same emission, are listed as a single entry but
their obverses and reverses are reproduced
separately in the left and right columns.

The description of every type refers to
analogies, denomination, size, weight and
degree of rarity (R). In few cases originality and
unique craftsmanship are also considered in
estimating the rarity of a coin. A basic criterion
in estimating the Mediocre, Fine or Very Fine
quality of a coin was its patina and how well the
original was preserved. Specimens of extremely
poor quality are not listed in the catalogue.
