The feminine genius is a popular phrase in theological parlance
but it is rarely given much content. Matthew Levering has managed
not only to give it content, but to explain the basic themes in Catholic
theology with reference to the contributions of great female saints and
theologians.This book should be on the reading lists of all Catholic
schools and liberal arts colleges.

Much has been written of the so-called feminine genius since
Pope John Paul II first coined the term, but its meaning remains
unclear and heavily debated. Without directly entering into this
debate, Levering advances the discussion by pointing, in his beautiful
systematic exposition of the doctrine of

saintly women throughout
the history of the Church, to an important insight. Feminine genius,
we are shown, is not an isolated phenomenon, but is realized and
revealed in communion: communion with God, who revealed his
Trinitarian Being to these women, and communion with the Church, the
Body-Bride of Christ, who nourished them as a Mother with her faith
and teaching. They, in turn, continue to nourish the Church with the
wisdom they have received in and through the communion of saints.
Finally, with his own masculine genius for systematic exposition
and his rich knowledge of Church teaching, Levering manifests the
complementarity (in communion) of men and women by setting
the light of these women on a stand whence it shines on everyone .

Levering s new book revolves around a beautifully simple device:
he presents to us some of the great women of Christian history as
teachers of the common Catholic faith. But in adopting this simple
device, Levering attempts also to recast how we view the theology of
such figures as
Hildegard
and Julian. For Levering, each of the figures
he includes

Egeria in
the fourth century Mediterranean world,
to Edith Stein facing death at the hands of the Nazis
-
writes from the
heart of the Church. And thus this book is also a vision of the faith
held by that Church, an introduction to Catholic theology itself.
