In the presented monograph titled Culture in History
-
the History in
Culture, the author aims to analyze the impact of the activities of Slo¬
vak intellectuals, which are mostly defined as artists, but principally
as natural promoters and participants in the public dialogue reflecting
fundamental issues of the Slovak existence in the first half of the mod¬
ern twentieth century. The scope of this historical analysis ranges from
the self-definition of the Slovaks as a sovereign nation within Czech¬
oslovakia through the urgent problems of existential proportions of
the general public
-
and the scholars as an integral part of it
-
to the
question of creative freedom and the associated moral principles of
a free, or a freedom-seeking creative person and the human individual
as such.
One of the paradigms of the modern Slovak cultural history is also
the fact that the traditional Slovak intellectual was predominantly a
writer, which, at least since
Ján
Kollár
was also a representative of the
social, political and ideological trends. In their every-day jobs, the Slo¬
vak litterateurs often worked as publicists (especially in cultural pe¬
riodicals, but also in the newspapers), which was a fact that played
a key role in the thematic-contextual formation of the spirit of mod¬
ern Slovak society. And since it was the Modern Age that gave birth to
the concept of intellectual modernism, the Slovak intellectuals were
mainly recruited from representatives of the post-revolutionary, pre¬
dominantly literary generation, which, together with the emerging
new generations gave Slovakia its modern national character and co-
founded the overall cultural milieu of the country. It is in performing,
in the indisputable benefits, but also fateful civil failures of this genera¬
tion during a dramatic decade

history of the twentieth century was reflected in a Slovak modern, in
terms of their perceived environmental and aesthetic sense of style.
Therefore, the central theme of the book can also be seen through the
story of a modern Slovak intellectual
-
as co-founder, as a tool and as a
victim of political power.
The author stresses in the introduction, that at first sight, the the-
matically specification of this publication and the focus on Slovak liter¬
ary production may be seen as a incomprehensible challenge for the
historian. But simultaneously, she also adds that the opposite is true,
arguing that the historical adaptation of this interesting topic is cer¬
tainly possible not least because the culture and especially the litera¬
ture (and cultural journalism, which is associated with it) as a specific
area of human activity had an immense importance in Slovakia and
has played a crucial and traditional opinion-making role in the spir¬
itual sphere.
Although according to the European tradition the modern culture
was based on a strict separation of the spiritual from the secular pow¬
er, the political the history of the twentieth century was, as it is well
known, not always favourable to the culture, since it put dissonant ele¬
ments into its practice. On the other hand, the modernism (the artistic
avant-garde), which at that time dominated the culture (and especially
the art) of Western Europe has acquired an unprecedented radical
political dimension, which it lacked previously. Just because of its
origins (the need for radical social change is a revolution), the avant-
garde (art) movements were no longer merely artistic trends in the
aesthetic-stylistic meaning of that word. And according to the author,
it is exactly here that the cause of the feature of criticized European
intellectual of the twentieth century
-
especially its socio-political en¬
gagement, can be found.
It is quite understandable that after having defined the topic in
these terms, the author-historian could not operate with solely his¬
torical heuristics, but she inevitably had to work with sources and
literature from other related disciplines, such as literary history and
to a certain extent history of philosophy, while recognizing the risk of
maintaining or managing of interdisciplinary aspects in the appropri¬
ate balance of content and scope.
The chronological definition of the topic was facilitated by the de-

velopmental
macrostructure
of modernism, which is traditionally lim¬
ited by historical milestones
-
the years
1918 - 1948 -
and which was
borne by several generations of artists. This periodization takes into
account the non-literary socio-historical context. Historical milestones
within this period that had to be mentioned are the establishment of
Czechoslovakia in
1918
and its decline in
1939,
World War II, the fall
of the wartime Slovak Republic in
1945,
restoration of Czechoslovakia
and the establishment of a totalitarian autocratic regime of the Com¬
munist Party in
1948.
In the presented monograph, the author applied
this periodization also for the structure of the whole content, which
is divided chronologically, while individual chapters and subchapters
are ordered thematically.
As the modern Slovak culture as an integral part of the social organ¬
ism did not develop in isolation, but within the Slovak and European
history, the monograph does reflect the Slovak and international po¬
litical context.
The importance of the term phenomenon of modernity for the
organic development of Slovak culture of the twentieth century, which
at least apparently tended to the Western European type, is inter¬
preted by the author in so far as the modern Slovak culture not only
confirmed its national-cultural identity but it also contributed to its
further development. The fact that it was just at this platform that the
Slovak modern was communicating not only with the modern Czech
culture, but also the wider European culture, may be seen as an evi¬
dence of this assumption. In this context, the author stresses the fact
that it was primarily the factor of making a free choice, further the
affined ideological content and the aesthetic or artistic program cri¬
teria, which itself were sufficient expression of the self-awareness of
the modern Slovak culture of the modernist period, which played an
important role in the mutual communication.
The fundamental problem of the Slovak pattern of modernity that
shaped the Slovak intellectual consisted according to the author in the
traditional tension between two cultural concepts
-
the predominant
National-Christian and the sparser, nevertheless not negligible secular
(modernist) concept. By reflecting the contemporary cultural, espe¬
cially the literary context and scope, the nature of Slovak modernism
is understood by the author as a relationship between traditionalism

and
modernity,
or an interaction between the universal and the par¬
tial in culture respectively.
Despite of, or maybe because of the traditional tensions between
the cultural concepts, the Slovak culture in the described period suc¬
ceeded to achieve a degree of autonomy, which assumed its organic
self-development in the coming decades and even guaranteed a pos¬
sibility to approach the high level of the European cultural dimension
-
that cultural dimension, which according to the Slovak litterateur
Jozef
Felix was formed by the soul of Dante s Renaissance culture and
the spirit of Voltaire s Enlightenment culture, because it was precisely
them who formed the essence of European modernism.
