Poles and Their Memory of the Past:
A Sociological Study of Collective Memory

Podkarpackie
Region
This work concentrates on the collective memory of selected categories of
Podkarpackie
Voivoidship inhabitants. It emerged as the result of a series of re¬
search studies devoted to the phenomenon of regional and local collective me¬
mory
-
particularly as it is reflected in attitudes towards the past as well as in the
symbolic spaces which have acted as the impetus for local antagonisms.
This study was based on several research techniques. Among other elements,
a survey was carried out among

tants of
Podkarpackie
Voivoidship. Additionally,

in-depth interviews were
conducted with individuals representing various social institutions in which me¬
mory plays a significant role (e.g.,
locai
government, education, mass media, the
Roman Catholic Church, and veterans organizations). Simultaneously, text ana¬
lysis was done of local press articles as well as of documentation found in those
institutions specifically responsible for
lieux de mémoire
and the cultivation of
national memory.
In the process of this investigation, we aimed to answer several questions:
what is the meaning of the past for students; to what extent can a region consti¬
tute a context for activities shaping a common memory; and to what extent is the
regional past a cause of contemporary conflicts? These queries simply reflect the
multidimensional nature of the problem at hand, a problem which is extremely
difficult to research and still highly controversial. The outcome of this study not
only renders an image of the attitudes towards the past found among certain ca¬
tegories of inhabitants in the region but also serve as a basis for drawing conclu¬
sions which could comprise the foundation for regional or local memory policies.
This volume is composed of four parts. The first focuses on the related theo¬
retical and methodological concepts. Discussed here are the key terminology and
concepts associated with the theoretical aspects of collective memory and its rela¬
tionship to tradition and identity. The issue of collective memory is also discussed
in the context of symbolic space and place. This chapter also presents the meth¬
odology and techniques utilized here, the procedures applied in the field research,

and the process by which the test group was selected. In order to draw the histori¬
cal context of the issues discussed, a historical outline of the last two centuries in
the
Podkarpackie
Region (within its current boundaries) was presented.
In the second section, we reveal the attitudes of University of
Rzeszów
stu¬
dents towards the past. Here can be found the results reflecting the different com¬
ponents of this attitude: the cognitive, affective and behavioral. The results facili¬
tated the formation of a typology of the attitudes students have towards the past.
Here, too, we discussed the transmission of collective memory in the families of
the respondents.
The third part includes the results of the research carried out among the local
political, media, and educational elites. The topic of the interviews was the unique
nature of the region, the canon of historical individuals and events, as well as the
means by which current collective memory is shaped at the local level. The trans¬
formation of this memory at the national level
-
over the last two decades after the
post-
1989
systemic transformation in Poland- is also presented in this chapter.
Chapter four discusses precise cases of memory conflicts in the
Podkarpackie
province. These focus on cases of disagreement regarding for
lieux de mémoire
connected with the communist era as well as recent conflicts connected with at¬
tempts to commemorate some of the functionaries
ofthat
system. Also deliberat¬
ed are disputes between Poles and Ukrainians in the region over memorialization
of military conflicts dating back to the Second World War and first postwar years.
