SUMMARY
The volume is a collection of essays written during the period
2005-2011.
The first chapter in the volume (The public sphere...) refers to
current changes within the public sphere of contemporary socie¬
ties in the Western World. The author s thesis states that the hi¬
storically-developed clear division of social life into private and
public spheres, as rooted in ancient Greece and Rome, has been
blurred in our times. This has occurred due to the ongoing confu¬
sion of social values and individual interests. The latter, traditio¬
nally in the private sphere, now penetrate the public sphere and
cause the degradation and corruption of public life. Among the
social reasons for this phenomenon, the author singles out: the in¬
creasing scale of social and political structures; the growing role of
specialization and science in collective life; a permanent crisis of
democracy
-
political elitism; the growing role of legal regulations
and lawyers in collective life; the externalization of social norms;
the role of mass media, particularly television; and globalization.
In the chapter s conclusion, the author makes predictions concer¬
ning possible future changes in the Western World.
The next three chapters deal with the problems of civil socie¬
ty in Poland. The author emphasizes that because of traditional
weakness of Polish middle classes, which had been dominated
for centuries by Germans and Jews then dramatically swept from
Poland by the war, contemporary Polish society consists mostly

of the people of peasant origin with civil society rooted parado¬
xically in old tradition and culture of the noble class
(szlachta).
Another historical circumstance which strongly conditioned mo¬
dern Polish civil society was the partition of Poland by Russia,
Prussia, and Austria at the end of the XVIIIth century. For more
than one hundred years Poles, being deprived of their own public
sphere, acted and organized themselves against the state, rather
than with it. These factors, as well as others scrutinized in the vo¬
lume, influenced and shaped the national character of Poles. The
author singles out negative features which characterize today s
ordinary activities of Poles in the public sphere. He emphasizes
that these features pertain mostly to everyday activities. (During
profound social crises or common threats Poles are usually able to
unite and effectively co-operate). The negative feature are:
1)
the
lack of an affinity for punctuality, accuracy, tenacity, and effective
co-operation;
2)
little sense of the common good and compromise
in order to achieve public discourse;
3)
suspicion of strangers and
an aversion toward them;
4)
irritability and combativeness, strong
feelings of envy;
5)
a strong feeling of separation of the governed
from the governors, but with a propensity toward government;
6)
a proclivity for being against a person or cause rather than finding
common goals of support;
7)
a universal predilection for secrecy
and conspiracy. According to the author, these attitudes seem to
be rooted in Polish national history and are major impediments
toward a judicious civil society and welfare.
The two next essays are devoted to European affairs. The first
(The identity of Europe.
..)
shows the uniqueness and socio-political
importance of the density of European international borders. The
thesis of the author is that the great number of states congested on
a relatively small area of the Continent, and the historical, secu¬
lar balance of power between them, are the main reasons for the
unprecedented technical and cultural development of Europe. In

the second essay (On the peculiarity.
..)
the author tries to show the
differences in the understanding of concepts of nation and natio¬
nal minority in Western and Eastern Europe, and their influence
on the political development of both parts of the continent.
The last two essays refer to two different questions. The first
(On „love.
.. )
deals with the matter of labour. The author concen¬
trates on three major points:
1)
the personal character of work,
its types and importance for man;
2)
the antinomy of labour and
capital;
3)
the relationship between work and wage. His short
analyses are related mostly to the modern Polish economy with
some remarks on the current economic crisis. The last short essay
(Solidarity
-
social idea of love) refers to types of social bonds in¬
cluding the particular role of love.
