This, eighteenth of series, volume of the
W służbie nauki
[In the Service of
Science] has been dedicated to the memory of the linguist and dialectologist
Kazimierz
Nitsch. It is an aftermath of a scientific session of the Polish Academy
of Arts and Sciences dated 20th June
2008
that was organised on the
50*
anni¬
versary of Professor
Kazimierz
Nitsch s death by the Faculty of Philology of the
Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. The scientific session was accompanied
by an exhibition prepared by
Małgorzata Mrówka
and Bernadeta
Wilk
in the
Archives of the Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences and of the Polish
Academy of Arts and Sciences in Krakow, entitled Pigmalion

course of the ceremony, and also reminiscent of important episodes from the life

Kazimierz
Nitsch.

as a scholar and teacher] presents Nitsch s silhouette as a scholar
and educator, school teacher and a lecturer for generations of linguists. He drew
attention to the fact that the bibliography of his scientific work includes more
than
720
items (books, dissertations, articles, reviews, polemics, additions to
other articles). These publications still retain their value not only for dialectolo-
gists and historians of language, but also to a wide range of researchers.

gwar polskich
[The little atlas of Polish dialects] and
Słownik gwar pol¬
skich
[Dictionary of Polish dialects]. It was necessary to create the concept,
development of rules for issuing these two works, giving the organizational fra¬
mework and preparation facilities in the form of a large number of well-trained
dialectologists all Polish universities. Painstaking work and many years col¬
lecting materials in the field resulted in the subsequent volumes in print these
valuable papers.
