PHILOSOPHY “This outstanding work of scholarship makes a major contribution to the field of film studies and to the understanding of the work of Gilles Deleuze. The Neuro-Image extends Deleuze’s questions and concerns by thinking through recent developments in film and movingimages culture and succeeds magnificently in mobilizing Deleuze’s ideas in order to discover something new.” —steven shaviro, Wayne State University Todays viewers no longer look through a character s eyes; instead, they move through his or her brain or mental landscape. Such is the premise of this book, which approaches twenty-first-century globalized cinema through the new concept of the “neuro-image” and helps us to understand why it has emerged in our present moment. The threefold nature of the neuro-image is elaborated through research from three domains—Deleuzian (schizoanalytic) philosophy, digital networked screen culture, and neuroscientific research. These domains return in the book s tripartite structure. Part one considers the brain as screen, or “neuroscreen,” thereby grounding contemporary cinema in our bodily materiality. It investigates clinical and critical aspects of schizophrenia alongside contemporary films that deal with the same disease, elaborates connections between film theory and cognitive neuroscience, and reflects on the omnipresence of surveillance. The book goes on to explore neuro-images from a philosophical perspective, paying close attention to their ontological, epistemological, and aesthetic dimensions. Individual chapters deal with Bergson, Deleuze, and Hume, the
increasing blurring of the false and the real, and the affective powers of what has come to be called the neo or digital baroque. The final section of the book takes up political and ethical aspects of the neuro-image, its role in the production of historical memory, its political impact, and the multiplication of screens in the context of war and war films. patricia pisters is Professor ofMedia Culture and Film Studies and Chair ofthe Department ofMedia Studies at the University ofAmsterdam. Her publications include The Matrix of Visual Culture: Working with Deleuze in Film Theory (Stanford University Press, 200}).
