SUMMARY
Granwald
Patriotic Union was one of the most mysterious associations which
has been operating in the
1980s
in the Polish People s Republic. The group took its
name from one of the greatest Polish victories from the Medieval era
-
the Battle of
Grunwald.
In
1410
the Polish-Lithuanian allied forces won the big battle against the
German Teutonic Order. The battle took place near a village called
Grunwald,
hence
its name. The
Grunwald
organization was officially established in April
1981,
but
since the end of December
1980
the supporters have already started to cooperate.
The main purpose of the Union was to be on the front line of the propaganda battle
with an anti-communist opposition. This group, so called patriots, was the most
active and strident in
1981.
The documents used in my publication come from the Archive of the Institute
of National Remembrance, the Archive of the Ministry of the Foreign Affairs, the
Central Archive of the Modern Records and the Archive of the Ministry of National
Defense. For my research I used newspapers from the
1980s,
published by both the
regime and the opposition. I have also met in person with some former members of
the
Grunwald
Patriotic Union whose testimonies were very helpful to the under¬
standing of the character of the organization.
The book is composed of three chapters. In the first one I describe the relations
between communism and nationalism in the Polish People s Republic and I try to
answer the question whether such organization as
Grunwald
could function only in
Poland, whether it was typically Polish. In this chapter I also present the beginnings of
the organization, the problems connected with the official registration and a number
of members, which, in fact, was not very high. A very important issue, which is also
taken into consideration in this chapter, refers to close ties between the
Grunwald
Patriotic Union and the Ministry of the Interior. In the second chapter I focus on the
most important event organized by the association namely a manifestation, which
took part on 8th March,
1981,
next to the former building of the Ministry of Public
Security. The same place where during the Stalinist period many Polish citizens were
tortured and interrogated. I describe the circumstances related to the organization
of this demonstration as well as the reaction of the authorities and the opposition.

Moreover, I examine the political impact of the publicly raised anti-Semitic slogans.
I also discuss international reactions to the Grunwald s manifestation. The last
chapter presents the political and social program of the association and describes
the quarrels and disputes within the organization, which ended with the intervention
of the Ministry of the Interior.
When Solidarity was born in the second half of
1980,
the communist authori¬
ties were doing everything they could to undermine the independent Trade Unions.
The ruling regime of the Polish United Workers Party had at his disposal a number
of measures to fight against Solidarity. Secret police, military and civil repression
services, the Polish Army or mass media fully subordinated to the authorities were
used for this purpose.
Grunwald
was another form of the regime s struggle against
freedom.
Grunwald
is often cited as an example of a Polish national-communist
movement because it tried to combine and incorporate seemingly opposing ideolo¬
gies: communism and nationalism. The fact that this organization had in its program
socialistic slogans was obvious
-
that was the rule for all the groups of political nature
at the time. But the members of this association went further in their defense of com¬
munism as they very often used anti-Semitic and anti-German arguments in political
discourse. That was not very well received on both sides of the ideological barricade.
Not surprisingly, the members of the
Grunwald
association usually criticized
opposition activists, especially from the Workers Defense Committee
(KOR).
Ac¬
cording to them,
KOR
remained under the Jewish influence, was synonymous with
all the worst, and was a symbol of a counter-revolution . The brochures and leaflets
distributed by
Grunwald
presented
KOR
members as extremists aiming for a na¬
tional disaster and willing Polish blood to be spilled. The party management did not
hesitate to use hatred towards Jews, which existed within the Polish society, and to
compromise some of Solidarity s supporters of Jewish origin, especially those
related to
KOR. Such
an instrumental use of anti-Semitic attitudes, as attempted by
PRL
authorities, was met, however, with loud protests in the country and abroad,
especially in the United States and in Western Europe.
But Grunwald s supporters did not only focus on the opposition. They claimed,
that even PUWP was not ideologically pure. Liberal members of the communist
party were also the targets of public attacks conducted by the association. That is why
Grunwald
got support from high-ranking party members identified as hardliners .
The organization had, for example, very good relations with PUWP committee in
Warsaw. The Patriotic Union was not suspended and could freely operate during the
martial law
-
the fact, which one also has to take into consideration while looking
at a Polish political scene of the period.
The leader of the
Grunwald
union was a well-known film director
Bohdan
Poręba.
Most of the members of his association were in some way linked with the
regime. In the organization, there were many former military and secret police of¬
ficers. The executive members were very ambitious so as a result of internal disputes

Union was soon divided into two opposing factions. The Ministry
of the Interior was forced to intervene in
1983
and the problems were for some time
resolved.
The political program of the Patriotic Union was not very complicated. The activ¬
ists postulated for patriotic education, patriotic behavior and even patriotic music. The
name of the organization already indicated its anti-German character. The members
organized many conferences about Polish history, published patriotic calendars and
books. The
Grunwald
Patriotic Union had functioned without any problems on the
part of the authorities till
1990.
When communism collapsed such an organization
was no longer desirable. Some of its members joined various other extreme-right
political parties but they were still left on the margins of the great politics.
