Summary
The present book paints a picture of France and the French¬
men during the initial period of the French Revolution, that is be¬
tween the years
1789
and
1794.
It has been retrieved from the
newspaper reports published at approximately the same time in
Warsaw.
The Author s main goal was to show what an average reader
living at the end of king Stanislaus August s reign could learn
about political developments on the Seine from major press titles
appearing in the capital of Poland. Moreover, the Researcher has
focused her interest on the problem to what extent the above-
mentioned image of France corresponds to the historical reality
known from other contemporary sources.
The chronological limits of the Authors deliberations are con¬
stituted by two important events, namely the summoning of the
Estates-General in May
1789
and the overthrow of the revolution¬
ary government in July
1794.
The subject researched into by the Author is relatively new
since the scholarly interest in the attitude of the Polish general
public to the political situation in revolutionary France has given
fairly modest results so far. It was H. Rzadkowska, the author of
the work entitled
Stosunek polskiej opinii publicznej do rewolucji
francuskiej (Warszawa
1948),
who pioneered the study in the sub¬
ject. Fifty years after her publication, there appeared another impor¬
tant book, namely
Publicystyka stanisławowska o modelu rządów
monarchii francuskiej (Wrocław
1990)

entifically memorable monographs elaborating on this issue.
The Author of the present book drew her information from
Polish language periodicals appearing in Warsaw. There were five
major magazines published between
1789
and
1794
in the capital
of the Polish Republic, namely
„Gazeta Warszawska , „Gazeta
Narodowa i Obca , „Korespondent Warszawski , „Gazeta Krajowa ,
„Gazeta Wolna Warszawska .
The scope of the Researcher s inter¬
est has also included
„Pamiętnik Historyczno-Polityczny ,
which,
though it tended to print mainly documentary (economic, social
and scientific) materials, did not refrain from publishing informa¬
tion on the latest events which took place in the world. She also
analyzed
„Zabawy Obywatelskie ,
which continued the editorial
tradition of the previous periodical.
The present book arranges problems in chronological order,
and it consists of five chapters, an introduction, conclusions, ap¬
pendices and indexes. In chapter I the Author discusses the Polish
press market and the prerequisites for its development in the age
of Enlightenment as well as characterizing each of the above-
-mentioned press titles. In order to achieve the goal, the Researcher
makes use of an ample choice of modern scholarly literature on
the subject, while the personal contribution of the Author lies in
her sketching of an overall attitude of the press towards revolu¬
tionary France and working out the statistics of press reports from
that country.
The rest of the book has been based on the Author s painstak¬
ing analysis of sources. In chapter II of the present publication the
Researcher discusses how the Warsaw press saw the major politi¬
cal developments taking place in France from the time of the
summoning of the Estates-General in May
1789
until the end of
the first National Assembly on the 30th of September
1791.
Chapter III of the book was devoted to the reflections of the
Polish press on the internal problems of the French monarchy and
its foreign policy, and it covers the period of the Second Legislative
Assembly (Legislation), with a particular emphasis on the events
taking place on the front of the war waged by France against Aus¬
tria and allied Prussia (which broke out in the spring of
1792
and
was soon to turn into a conflict of on the European scale)

Finally, the last two chapters of the book elaborate on the way
the Polish press pictured the events taking place on the Seine be¬
tween September
1792
and July
1794,
that is from the

meeting of the National Convention to the Thermidorian Reac¬
tion.
In the appendices the Author included statistical tables and
a number of source extracts. The latter are mainly decrees of the
successive legislative assemblies and royal speeches.
The conducted analyses of the Warsaw press reports have led
the Researcher to a number of interesting conclusions. First an
foremost, the Author argues that the editors of the Warsaw news¬
papers observed the revolutionary events in France with a consid¬
erable interest and attention. She also stresses the fact that they
informed systematically and accurately the domestic readership
about all the most important political, religious, economic and cul¬
tural problems. As a result, she maintains, any careful reader res¬
ident in Warsaw could receive complete and informative coverage
of virtually all major events taking place in the country on the
Seine, and therefore easily form his/her own judgments based on
facts.
The Polish press was especially interested in the activities of
the French Legislative Assemblies, and it was
„Gazeta Narodowa
i Obca and „Pamiętnik Historyczno-Polityczny
which published
particularly detailed reports on the issue. It is worthy of notice
that both the periodicals felt obliged to introduce separate column
section in which they were meticulously covering each of the ses¬
sions of the National Assembly and the Constituent Assembly, in¬
cluding speeches of their deputies as well as the texts of the
promulgated decrees. Another subject which was widely discussed
by the Polish press was the war of France against the Prussian-
-
Austrian coalition.
Last but no least, the editors of the Warsaw journals paid
much attention to the fate of the royal family. They would write
a lot about the life of the Court, the health of the king and the
queen, their children, and even elaborated on Louis XVI s eating
preferences, places he was inclined to visit and his travel compan¬
ions. Naturally, the execution of the French monarch in January
1793
became a big sensation exploited by the press.
