Summary
The geological researches of solid mineral substances and hydrocarbons on
the territory of our country started in the first half of the 19th century, while mining
had started several thousand years before hydrocarbons drilling.
Archeological documents of historians and geographers show that exploitation
of solid minerals began thousands of years ago in the Carpathian-Danube-
Pontic territory.
There is little knowledge about petroleum and its existence on our territory;
it was known as bitumen and first mentioned in the I-IV centuries, AD.
Mining and petroleum research and exploitation were rudimentary in the
beginning; it was only in the 19th century that systematic investigations were made
possible, especially in the second half, when two universities were founded: the
University of Iasi, in
I860
and the University of Bucharest in
1864.
The Geological Institute of Romania, (1GR.) was founded in
1906
under
Professor
Ludovic Mrazec s
leadership.
In
1939,
the Commercial Administration of Mining Prospecting and
Exploring, (ACEX) was established coordinated by the Ministry of National
Economy.
The IGR was replaced on August 8lh,
1949
by the Geological Committee,
whose objective was the research of the richness of the soil.
Soon, the Geological Committee, led by Professor Gheorghe Macovei,
included ACEX and then founded the Exploring Division, known as ISEM in
1950,
becoming IGEX in
1966
and IFLGS in
1970.
The place of IGR was taken by the Research and Prospects Division of the
Geological Committee, known from
1950
as IPL.
With the foundation of SOVROM for hydrocarbons and radioactive metals,
the Geological Expedition was organized, as well as ISEM-IGEX.
After many debates, the place of the Expedition was taken by TPEDMN in
1954,
and then cancelled in
1965,
when IPL-OPL took over the production activity.
In April
1970,
OPL was transferred to IPL-
CG
leading to the founding of
the IGPSMS, subordinated to the MIMG, since the
CG was
no longer in existence.
Three periods of time can be mentioned with regard to the hydrocarbons
exploitation:
• 1857-1948;
• 1948-1990;
• 1990
-present.

The period
between
1948
and
1990
is known for the geological research
and the exploitation of petroleum and gas, by the state companies.
The
prospection
activity was started in
1948
by the IGR and was continued
in
1949
by the Geological and Geophysical Research Office, subordinated
to SOVROM
-
PETROL.
In
1956,
the Office became IPGG, the first state company for hydrocarbons,
which later in
1972
became IPGGH.
In
1981,
IGPSMS joined IPGGH under the old name of IPGG.
In
1991,
IPGG became
SC Prospecţiuni
SA,
which is currently under private
ownership.
IFLGS was known as SC FORADEX
SA in
1990
and was privatized in
2008.
The Exploring Companies, (IE), founded during the Geological Expedition
became independent companies in
1990,
as IPEG.
As SOVROM KWARTIT, the radioactive metals department no longer
existed, the Rare Metals Trust was founded and it had research companies.
At present, there are a National Company
(CNV)
and a Research and
Prospection
Institute for uranium products.

This paper has two parts. The first part contains descriptions, while the
second one includes biographies of geologists and scientists in the field of geology.
The chapters of the paper are:

It also contains

Given its limited number of pages, this book does not present a strictly
functional geological material, but rather a description and a logical succession of
facts.
Furthermore, in spite of few exceptions, it does not contain details, analysis or
conclusions of great extent.
Listed in alphabetical order, the biographies include a great number of
people who contributed to the accomplishment of the geological objectives:
geologists, hydro geologists, chemists, geophysicists and many others.
