A look at the antic town Orik
anã
the surrounding zone
The antic Orikhas been a Greek-Roman town, created in
the century

(before Christ). It lies in the eastern part
and in the height of the Palokastra hill, which is located in
the southern part of the Vlora s bay. From its ruins it
continues into the lake of Orikum that makes visible its
Sunk in the depth of the lake.
Nowadays, from Orik there has remained the Theatre, the
Well of the water, the Rocky Stairs and the parts of the road
of the town that lead to the lake. In the southern part of the
lake there is the
Nekropoli
of the town and also springs with
clear water that give life to the plants.
Orik as an antic town is mentioned by many foreign
travelers of the past century but even by the famous figures
of the human life. The most famous are:

In the museum of Vlora city in the antic period hall there
are different objects of Orik town
:
Coins cut in copper and brass of different sizes, a ceramic
pot, pieces of column and also a beautiful mocket of the
Marmiroi s Church and of Dervish Aliu s tower. Up on the
lake and on the hill there are just built up the akrokeravme

mountains more exactly Karaburuni and Sazani in the north¬
west and the
Rimi
mountains in the south and the Llogara s
neck is located in the south-east.
The name Akrokeraune conies from the ancient times
and means the Lightening Mountains. The highest peak is
that of
Koro

and in its north is the peak of
Bitret

over the sea level and in the north direction is the
peak of Hilqe

m.
More in the north there is Sazan island, the only one of
Albania with a surface of about 5km2.
The length of
Karaburun
is approximately

km, the
western part is almost bare and with rare pastures.
Karaburun
has the shape of a huge thumb with a curve in
the direction of west. In the north-west there is Gjuheza
capi
the most western point of Albania. In Gjuheza there is
the biggest marine cave of our country that is known with
the name of Haxhi AH.
In
Karaburun
can be found marble which has been used
since in the ancient times. In the eastern part of the
Karaburun
it has been built an
automobilistic
road along
the seaside after the second world war. In Saint Jan, Saint
Vasi
bristan
there are places for the yaht s stay in
casa
and
for journey walks.
In the south of the town there are the Rimi s mountains.
Their height reaches

the sea level with the peak
of Saint Aliu. In front of it and just upon the lake, it is built
up the peak of Sinan

In the eastern side there can be seen the mountains of
Tra
«ja s
and
Dukat,
which separates this zone from that of
the river of Vlora and
Laberia.
The western part of the
Rimi
mountains that falls down on the sea is called the Sea Side,
while their northern part is called
Rreza e
Kanalit.
The
neck of Llogara is the border between Adriatic sea and
Ionian sea. There are winter and summer pastures for the
sheep. There are interesting caves in
Rimi
Mountains the
most particular that of Dukagjini with stalactite and
stalagmite.
Their northern part that falls down like a knife on the
Dukat
field has been eroded by the small rivers which have
created deposits that are a characteristic of all the south.
The sea side has lonely and small bays with a very clear
water where in the depth it ca be seen the bottom of the sea
with its stones.
One of this bays is that of Grama that is rare in all Europe
for its old stories of the
marins
who saved from the storms
and which are dated before Christ.
The eastern part about

km in distance the mountains
of Tragjas build up with

over the sea level with the
peak of Vejave and continues in the south with the peak of
Melleza

the sea level. In the south up on the neck
of Llogara builds up
Çika

on the sea level. Its peak is
continuously covered with snow and is rich of woods and
wild animals

The climate is Mediterranean subtropical but there are
particular places with microclimate where continental
climate and tropical Mediterranean are exchanged. There
are near each-other the climatic
subzones.

The historic places are very famous for their legends of
their names. The neck of Qesar took its name from the most
famous emperor of the
roman
empire,
Jul
Qesar who has
passed with his army to fight with another famous one of
the Pompey empire.
Famous for their history are the neck of Llogara that of
Saint Gjergji etc.
In the surrounding zone there are some caves that are
unique in Albania and even of each other. The most
important from the Tail of Tongue (Bishti
i Gjuhezes)
to
Llogara are:

A complete scientific work about these caves has been
done by the Historic Museum of Vlora.
In all the zone there are many ruins of churches with
names of saints and places. They are of christian-orthodox
rit
and are dates in the beginning of the chritianism. The
Marmiroi church is in a good state after the restoration that
is done by a religious woman. The aphresces are almost
destroyed, but the church has remained almost good. It is
located in
Rreza e
Kanalit
up on a rocky hill and surrounded
in three sides by water.

Rebuilt in the

century on the bases of another church
it is thought to be one of the oldest churches in Albania that
exists today. Other existent churches but from which have
remained only the ruins are:

The church of Thilpot is in a fairly good condition even
today. From the Muslim religion there are mosques but they
are earlier and belong to the 19th century.
Within the Orikum municipality there are the following
culture monuments:

The Tower of Dervish
Ali
is located in
Dukat
Village, built
in the end of 18th century, is a large stone tower with beautiful
spaces and annexes.
250
people could get shelter and fight in
this tower. The tower is a museum today and in view of the
building shape and its space it is unique in all South Albania.
The Castle of Gjon
Boçari
is located in a clay hill North of
the Old Tragjas village. It is thought to have been built in the

end of the 18th century. The hillside walls are lm thick and
are kept well. It has a surface of

000m2, its shape is hexa¬
gonal, and
observation
or fighting towers were built in it.
The remains of the village .Old Tragjas has been
nominated as culture monuments. They all have been built
with stones carved by masters hands. The village is
abandoned as it was burned during the Second World War
by the German forces. Although abandoned it still has beauty
in itself, shown the stone arches of the gates. It is really a
work and life culture that impresses and makes one proud.
In the Old Tragjas are the remains of the old castle which is
thought to have been an Illyrian castle and is named the
Sofa s Castle, it is located in a round hill and even its remains
are being lost. There are also remains of Illyrian tombs.
The flora and the fauna of the zone is rich and it has a
variety of rare species. The climatic conditions of the zone
have made possible the development of arious plants
cultivated and wild.
The ecological conditions provide possibilities for
cultivation of many agricultural plants such as vegetables,
cereals, forages, etc. Very well developed in this area are also
the fruit trees of the Mediterranean zone, such as citrus
(oranges, lemons, mandarins) and olive trees. The grape is
also fitting with the above mentioned conditions. To these
cultures the zone is giving high priority.
Very interesting are also the natural plants. I this area
there are found many grass and oily plants which are used
by the popular medicine. These plants are found from the
lower part of the field up to the hills and the high mountains.
We can mention Origanum L.
,
which is one of the more
known of the Europe varieties and is grown in the dry zone

from 20m altitude up to

above the sea level.
The area is also known for the growing of Sherebel
(Salvia

Triloba

the Sea Onion-Sulla

and Colchium L(c. Cupanni
Gusse).
In the altitude

above the sea level there is the oak
zone, which is very interesting, as it goes along all the valley
from Mazhar through Kavasall, Bidosh, above
Dukat,
is
arching above the New
Dukat
up to
Bristan.
Above this belt
it is the pine and the fir-tree zone which is very broad in
Llogora.
The rich fauna with animals such as deer, wild bear, wolf,
jackal, fox, wild rabbit and also the eritrofauna, interesting
for the land and water with wood pecker, sparrow, black¬
bird, magpie, hawk, falcon, partridge, dove, woodcock,
increase the tourism values of the zone. In the bay there are
often seen the dolphins of the Mediterranean.
From the hole of
Vaso in
the North side of the Rim
mountain up to Llogara there is a forest, which is part of the
National Park of Llogara. This forest has high pines and fir-
trees that can be up to
100
years old.
The vicinity with the sea South and North-West gives more
values for holiday camps and for the one-day transit journeys
of the inhabitants of Vlora,
Fier, etc.
Shengjei-gj separates the zone of
Dukat
and
Tragjas
from
the region of the River of Vlora and the same time is a close
of the National Park of Llogara. The forest with its specific
features is the one of Gjinevait, covered with trees of sumac;
Troqaj are the forest owners.
The tree of sumac is a very old tree with a height of over

with a lot of branches and hand shape leafs. The fruit

in Autumn producing cones. The cones are very good
as a food for animals, while the wrapping part have quality
value of processing of leather. The sumac is grown in the
zone of the olives. In the lawns is found marjoram, mountain
tea, sherebel and orchids.
Along the lake, especially in its Southern part are found
the following fowls: puleshkurta, kredharaku,

ducks and gooses. The lake is reach in fish, more widespread
is the mullet, but there also is flounder and the well known
skate of
Dukat.
The greatest water sources are in the zone of Tragjas. From
there start the sources of the only river of area,
Izvor.
The surface of all the area is
