On the soil of
Transylvania, a land
fabled for its tolerance,
there lived a community
that converted, in the late
16th century, to the faith
of the Jews. These people
had no blood ties binding
them to Jews. They
regarded themselves spiri¬
tual Jews.
In the land of tolerance
(where peoples and reli¬
gions got on fairly well
for centuries) in the first
fever of the Reformation
nearly the whole country
became Unitarian. Simon
Péchi
and his disciples
found the Old Testament
moving to such an extent
that they adopted Jewish
rites and called themselves
„Jews of the soul .
That is how the nigh
incredible path-finding of
the
Székely
(Szekler) Jews
or Sabbatarians, as they
were called began.
György Bözödi,
expert
researcher of the region,
writes: „The Turks laid
everything low and the
Germans oppressed the
people already rent by
internal strife. The people
wanted redemption and
they found it in the Bible.
They read the story of the
Jewish people and saw
their own fate reflected as
though in a mirror. They
thought they saw their
own faces mirrored in the
books of the prophets, so
full of suffering, slavery
and destruction. The face
was not theirs but of one
who is kith and kin; as
when two brothers meet
in time of grave danger.
Small wonder that they
fell in and stuck together
through thick and thin
and gave their lives before
they gave up their convic¬
tions. The faith of the
Sekler
Jews spread all
over the country in a few
years, but in the end more
established religions
would tolerate them no
longer. They were perse¬
cuted for centuries. When
tolerance for all creeds
was passed by the legisla¬
tive body at the end of
the nineteenth century,
only two villages
remained where this
strange faith persevered.
In the fourth decade of
the twentieth century
there were but a few
Szekler Jewish families
living in
Bözödújfalu,
the
Szekler Jerusalem.
György
Bözödi
made a tour of
them:
„Bözödújfalu
is the
Szekler Jerusalem, except
that this Jerusalem has
never been destroyed, this
is the only village where
the faith has survived
until this very day.
(1936)
Bözödi
persuaded
Zsigmond Móricz,
the
great Hungarian writer, to
go and visit the Szekler
Jews, and
Móricz
wrote a
vigorous series of reports
about them.
Then came the
„Jew Acts ...
...Indeed, a fate as cruel
and hard as any the Old
Testament relates was the
lot of the Szekler Jews. By
the eighties, three or four
old women were left to
keep the faith. Even the
village fell victim to
Ceaucescu s village-
destroying policy.
The journeys of the
inhabitants of the Szekler
Jewish village to
Bucharest to beg for
mercy for their village
were in vain. They were
evacuated and their vil¬
lage flooded with water.
Why the dam had to be
built when there is no
earthly use for it
-
no
one can say.

JERUSALEM FamiHenvon
där
toleranten Siebenbür- gendermaßen: „Türken Judentum-Bekennern.
gen, wo seit vielen Jahrhun¬
derten mehrere Nationen
nebeneinander leben, trat
am Ende des XVI. Jahr¬
hunderts eine ungarische
Gemeinschaft zum jüdischen
Glauben über. Es gab mit
den Juden keinerlei Ge¬
meinsamkeit des Blutes. Sie
bekannten sich zu einem
Judentum der Seele.
Im Lande der Toleranz, in
Siebenbürgen, hatte fast die
gesamte Bevölkerung im
Überschwang der Reforma¬
tion und Glaubenserneue¬
rung den Glauben der Uni¬
tarier angenommen. Im
Fieber der Glaubens¬
erneuerung gelangten Simon
Péchi
und seine Anhänger in
dem Maße zur Erkenntnis
des Neuen Testaments,
dass
sie die jüdischen
Riten übernahmen und sich
als „Seelenjuden bekann¬
ten. Und damit begann die
schier unglaubliche
Geschichte derjenigen
Menschen aus Sieben¬
bürgen, die zwar nicht
Juden durch Blut, aber
„Juden der Seele waren. So
begann die Wegsuche der
sich zum Judentum Beken¬
nenden von Siebenbürgen
oder der Samstägler von Sie¬
benbürgen, wie sie um¬
gangssprachlich genannt
wurden, im Hinblick auf
ihre Glaubensgründung,
oder besser: ihre Glauben¬
sübernahme.
György Bözö-
di, siebenbürgischer
Forscher, der sich der
Wahrheit gewidmet hatte,
erklärt das Phänomen fol-
haben gewütet, Tataren sind
eingedrungen und deutsche
Truppen haben dieses Volk
gepeinigt, dem noch dazu
von Innen der Geschwis¬
terzwist andauernd Wunden
zufügte. Sie warteten auf die
Erlösung und bekamen die
Bibel in die Hand, als Er¬
löserin. Und dort in der
Bibel fanden sie das
Schicksal des jüdischen
Volkes, als würde ihnen
Gott einen Spiegel vor¬
halten. Sie glaubten, ihr
eigenes Anlitz in den
Büchern der Propheten zu
erblicken, die voll¬
geschrieben waren mit
Leiden, Versklavung und
Untergang. Das Anlitz war
nicht das ihre, aber es war
ein vertrautes, wie dasjenige
zweier Geschwister, die sich
in einer Zeit großer Gefahr
begegnen. So ist es auch
nicht verwunderlich,
dass
sie sich liebgewonnen haben
und einander nicht mehr
verlassen, sondern sich
durch alle Prüfungen die
Treue gehalten haben, und
eher ihr Leben hingaben, als
dass
sie ihren Seelenfrieden
aufgegeben hätten.
Der Glaube der szekler Ju¬
dentum-Bekenner verbrei¬
tete sich innerhalb einiger
Jahre über das ganze Gebiet,
aber er wurde von den etab¬
lierten Konfessionen
schließlich doch nicht
toleriert... In den vierziger
Jahren des zwanzigsten
Jahrhunderts lebten nur
noch in
Bözödújfalu
- im
„Szekler Jerusalem - einige
György Bözödi
besuchte sie
alle der Reihe nach:
„Bözödüjfalu ist das
Jerusalem der szekler Juden.
Mit dem Unterschied,
dass
es dem Feind nicht gelungen
ist dieses Jerusalem zu zer¬
stören, ist dies die einzige
Gemeinde, wo der altherge¬
brachte Glaube erhalten ge¬
blieben ist - wir können sa¬
gen bis heute. (1936)
Und dann kamen die Juden¬
gesetze...
Es war wahrhaftig ein hartes
und düsteres Schicksal wie
im Alten Testament, das
über die szekler Judentum-
Bekenner kam... Und dann
fiel auch dieses Dorf
Ceauscescu s Dorfzerstö¬
rungspolitik zum Opfer...
Das Dorf wurde von den
rumänischen Behörden
unter Wasser gesetzt.
Géza Szávais
Buch, Szekler
Jerusalem versucht diese fast
fünfhundertjährige Ge¬
schichte, das Ende der Ge¬
schichte und die daraus zu
ziehenden Lehren zu for¬
mulieren. Der Autor sam¬
melt schon seit seiner Kind¬
heit (er wurde in einem
Dorf in der unmittelbaren
Nachbarschaft von
Bözödüjfalu geboren) das
Material für sein Buch. Auf
Grund der „Nachbarschaft
war es ihm möglich, tief in
diese außerordentlich ver¬
schlossene Welt hinein¬
zublicken. Der reich
bebilderte Band wird dem¬
nächst im Pont Verlag in
der
Conflux
Reihe auch auf
Deutsch erscheinen.
