a very interesting and valuable inheritence arrived at the Kubinyi
Ferenc
Museum
which shows a whole career, careers.
The giver, widowed Bertha
Istvánné
Szirmay-
Kalos Margit
was a resident of
Pestszentlőrinc.
Her husband, Bertha
István
(1884-1974)
composer, conductor, was born in
Varsány
community in
Nógrád
county. He spent some years in
Szécsény in
his childhood where his
father was the teacher of
Szécsény
elementary school, then its headmaster between
1912
and
1914.
On
21
st of January
1908
Bertha
István
came out with his piano play on the ball organized by
the Budapest
Szent Imre
Circle. His career started, its first station was
Lugos
between
1907
and
1908,
where he was a singing circle conductor. Then between
1908
and
1909
he worked
in the theatre of
Marosvásárhely
and
Székelyudvarhely.
He contracted with
Városligeti
Theatre between
1909
and
1912.
From
1912
he spent
2
years at the Hungarian Theatre, which
means the golden age of the theatres being in the early 20th century, belonged to
Beöthy
László.
In
1914
he contracted with
Király
Theatre, later with the
Népopera
and after its
downfall he contracted with the
Király
Theatre again, where he worked until
1919.
Because
of the political changes he emigrated to Switzerland, where he spent six and half years. For
six years he conducted in the
Zürich
Opera and for half year in the
Zürich
Corso
Operetta
Theatre. At this time he achieved many of his famous colleagues appreciation. After coming
home, he contracted with the
Király
Theatre again and in this year on 4th of December his
musical comedy Chopin was introduced. It is an operetta in three acts. Its music was compiled
from Chopin s works by Bertha
István
(p.
26.).
From
1929
he led the orchestra of the National Officer Casino for a year. From here he left
because of the appearance of loud film, and he acted in the radio with his orchestra more and
more in these years. In
1935
he went back last to the theatre world
,
because he was invited by
the greatest master dr.
Németh Antal,
who was the leader of the National Theatre. The
conductor worked just half a year in the theatre, but he conducted the successful piece
/
love
four women, starring
Bajor Gizi
and Csortos
Gyula
(p.
33-35.).
He left the National Theatre
because he organized the salon orchestra of the radio, which was run by the independent
Music Department from 14th of February,
1936,
under the control of the composer
Dohnányi
Ernő.
In the
1940s
he conducted
26
programmes a month and gave several concerts. In
1943

he organised the full orchestra of the radio which worked from
1st
of January, called
Rádiózenekar.
Bertha
István
got acquainted with his 4th wife, Szirmay
-Kalos Margit in
the radio, where the
writer- the
riporter
of Prague Hungarian Press of Budapest- introduced herself from
1931
mainly by educational plays, talks and readings for the radio listeners. From
1934
she acted in
the
Diákfélóra
and often in the
„10.20
talks (p.
44.).
She got married with Bertha
István
in
1940,
and soon, probably in
1941,
her journalist career
ended.
The Second World War made changes in the life of the Hungarian
Télédiffusion
and Radio
PLC. The management was relieved, the musical director
Dohnányi Ernő
went abroad. Bertha
István
was dismissed from his job according to a letter of 31st of March,
1945.
After that he
got only occasional orchestation orders. He accepted commissions in establishing Russian and
Soviet music programmes in
1950s.
From the
1960s
nobody had claimed for his work. He
died on 21st of October,
1974.
He was
90.
His wife presented her and her husband s inheritance to the
Kubinyi Ferenc
Museum in
1980.
This collection has near
700
pieces, cultural history, music and theatre history and art history
data, it can show the history of the first decades of the Hungarian Radio. We can know the
early 20th century theatre world, the golden age of the operetta and the appearance of jazz the
newest musical genre. We can see how the salon music got more and more valuable. Bertha
István
contributed to it with leading the salon orchestra of the radio. The main task of the first
decades of the radio was to entertain people.
The signed photos, hand written letters derived from the 20th century s great composers and
conductors make this collection great. The most important are:
Lehár Ferenc,
Szirmay Albert,
Bruno Walter,
Leo Blech,
Dohnányi Ernő,
Weiner
Leó
(p.
23-24).
The relics derived from the
mentioned people were the treasures of the conductor Bertha
István.
His wife also had
members from several writers and actors/actresses. We can mention some of the most famous
ones,
Herczeg Ferenc, Szép Ernő
and Vaszary
Piri
(p.
42., 46.).
The base of this present work/study is the inheritance watched in the museum, but of course
other institutions watch/ have documents connected to the conductor and his wife. First of all
datas
can be found in the archives of the Hungarian Radio and this study was completed by
researhes in Press Archives, in the collection of compositions and manuscript archive room of
the National
Széchényi
Library and in the collections of the National Theatre History
Museum and Institution.
