engineering in Japan. This book comprises the final reports of the GCOE
programme, including contributions from faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and students from
a wide variety of
biomedical
engineering
fields particularly in the nanoscale
biomedical
engineering, which is undoubtedly the most rapidly growing field of engineering and will
become the most important one in the
21
st century. The GCOE programme accelerated
growth of biological engineering studies. The results and prospective views obtained
from cross-disciplinary studies involving engineering and biology in the programme will
be a milestone in the advancement of human-centred science and technology.
