Summary
The Chronicles of
Đorđe Branko vic,
written almost three hundred
years ago, represent a very important landmark of older Serbian literacy:
this is a document of a secular nature, comprising a very extensive corpus,
and dating back to a period from which few written documents survived.
The Chronicles are
a historiographie
opus, conceived as a history of the
world with special references to Slav and above all Serbian history. In a
broader frame, it is a history of the Christian world from the 4th to the

7th
century.
The author,
Đorđe Branković,
belonged to one of the oldest and
most respected families of Serbian society at that time. His uncle and
elder brother
Sava
(Simeon) were men of the cloth and bishops, and his
brother
Sava
was politically very active. Since his father died early, and
his mother subsequently entered a convent, little
Đorđe
grew up in the
residence of his brother, the educated bishop
Sava.
He himself was
extremely well educated for his time. There is no reliable historical
information about his childhood and youth (the most important work on
Branković
and his work is the excellent monograph by J.
Radonie,
Count
Đorđe Branković
and his Time, published in
1911
but still relevant
today). In addition to Old Church Slavonic, obligatory for every educated
Serb at the time,
Branković
also knew German, Hungarian, Turkish and
Romanian as well as Latin and Greek; he probably also knew Russian. He
was well read, had a good knowledge of history and was at a very early
age, in
1663,
appointed to work in the Hungarian diplomatic service at the
Ottoman Porte. Throughout his entire life
Branković
evinced a great
interest in politics and had political ambitions.

His political activity, his high reputation in Serbian society of the
time and his pretensions to proclaim himself heir to the ancient throne of
the
Nemanjić
dynasty played a crucial role in his life. Through some
rather imaginative genealogy,
Branković
attempted to prove that he
sprang from the ancient Serbian lineage. These ambitions and his
involvement in various conspiracies made
Branković
a dangerous person
in the eyes of the Viennese court. He was forced to spend many years
under house arrest, first in Vienna, and then in
Eger
(Cheb).
This is where
his Chronicles were written
—
a manuscript of five books, numbering
approximately
3,000
pages, depicting historical events from the time of
the Emperor
Constantine
the Great up to the 17th century.
Branković
remained under house arrest, working on his Chronicles up to his death in
December
1711.
They were read and used in excerpts by his con¬
temporaries and in the decades that ensued. They have been studied by
numerous scholars, but have so far remained unpublished. The only
complete manuscript of the Chronicles that we know of is in the library of
the Serbian Patriarchate in Belgrade, catalogue no. R90. It is assumed that
Branković
dictated the text of the Chronicles which he then corrected and
edited in his own hand.
The publication of the Chronicles as part of the Critical Editions of
Serbian authors by the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts makes this
important historical document finally available to the reading public and
to those interested in history, and the history of language and literature.
The Chronicles are of great importance for many reasons, primarily as
material for historical Serbology which does not posses many comparable
documents of older secular literacy. Besides, the era in which the Chro¬
nicles were written, the 17th and first decades of the eighteenth century,
represent a lacuna in the history of Serbian literacy. Very little is reliably
known on the language situation in this period. This edition will certainly
contribute to complementing our knowledge of the period. The Chro¬
nicles are also significant for the history of literature since they mark the
beginning of modern Serbian scholarly historiography, while remaining
connected to the chronicle tradition of the old Orthodox Slav world. As
Branković
used a great number of historical sources, from Herodotus to
his own contemporaries, his Chronicles form important and interesting
material for historians, too.
The Volume I of the five in this edition contains the first three books
of the Chronicles. The first deals mainly with the early centuries of
Christianity, from the time of
Constantine
the Great to the rule of Theodo-

II. It describes the
Arian
heresy, the Ecumenical and some heretical
councils. At the beginning, the book also contains a series of interesting
references to Slavic ethno- and glotogenesis. It examines the issue of the
Slav primeval homeland, the arrival of the Slavs in Europe and Slav
history up to the time of the Apostles of the Slavs, Cyril and Methodius.
The second and smallest book of the Chronicles, deals mainly with
the Slav and Serbian history, the origins of the Serbs and the
Nemanjić
dynasty and describes the formation of the old
Nemanjić
Serbia.
The third book of the Chronicles is entirely dedicated to the history
of the
Nemanjić
dynasty. It begins with an account of the rule of Stefan
Prvovenčani
(First-Crowned) and the life of his brother, St.
Sava,
and
concludes with an account of the first phase of the downfall of the
Nemanjić
Serbian state at the time of
Dušan 's
son, Czar
Uroš,
the rule of
Vukašin
and
Uglješa
up to the battle at
Marica
in
1371
and the end of the
dynastic line of Stefan
Prvovenčani.
Serbian history is presented against a broad historical background,
primarily Byzantine, Bulgarian, Hungarian,
Vlach,
with the increasing
presence of the Ottoman Empire. |
