Summary
This collective volume (consisting of thirteen chapters articulated into three
sections, and of four addenda) opens with
Mojmír
Grygar s The Unbearable
Weight of Symbolism and Creed introducing the reader to the ideological
strife about
Fučík
that has been fought in his homeland throughout the sec¬
ond half of the last century. The epigraph drawn from the work of the 19th
century Czech satirist,
Havlíček-Borovský,
suggests the extreme polarization
of opinions concerning this figure ( a saint to some, a pig to others). The
essay offers a strong counterargument to all unequivocal interpretations of
Fučík s
personality by pointing out its ambivalent, uncertain, and perplex¬
ing features.
Texts and Idols:
Hostovský s
Anti-representation of Julius
Fučík,
penned
by Vladimir
Papoušek,
reveals the latent affinities between
Hostovský s
prop¬
agandistic
piece, The Communist Idol Julius
Fučík
and His Generation,
published by the National Committee for a Free Europe in
1953,
and his fic¬
tion. A close look at this particular representation of
Fučík
shows how much
Hostovský
fashioned it after the image of an inter-War European intellectual
as this type appears in
Hostovský s
literary works.
Petr
Koura s
historical inquiry, Julius
Fučík s
Resistance Activity in light
of (not Only) Nazi Documents, assiduously and methodically reconstructs
the story and history of the last adventure of
Fučík s
life. The stepping-stone
for the argument is a recorded but unpublished reminiscence of Marie
Zápo¬
tocká
impugning
Fučík s
resistance reputation that caused a minor sensation
in the fall of
1989
when it came to public light. But this is only one example in
the cautionary tale which instantiates well the point that not only the
Fučík
story was always manipulated for political ends but also that there are still too
many blind spots in this controversial figure s biography to draw a definitive
historical portrait.
In his contribution,
Jan Staněk
attempts to systematize and contextualize
various self-stylizing techniques
Fučík
employed to present himself.
Fučík
and the Revolutionary
Bohème
treats this autopoiesis in relation to the

all-inclusive category of the art of life —the ultimate mechanisms for gener¬
ating the
Gesamtkunstwerk
known as Julius
Fučík.
Viewed from a historical
vantage point,
Fučík s auto-stylization
is ineluctably linked to the romantic
type of a revolutionary writer-Bohemian.
The first section ends with a commemorative note about the signal role
Fučík s
widow performed in preserving and classifying her husband s literary
estate. Authored by
Libuše Eliášová, Gusta Fučíkova and Julius
Fučík s
Lega¬
cy, conveys an intriguing story of how the now defunct Museum of Julius
Fučík
came about, offering at the same time a useful glimpse of the
Fučík
holdings at
the Museum of the Labor Movement where they are currently accessible.
The middle section of the book, though comprised of only three chap¬
ters, is the longest and, certainly, the one that has been most avidly expected.
Here, thanks to Pavel
Janáček
efforts, the full text of the final Gestapo proto¬
col of
Fučík s
interrogations is made available for the first time. In To Drag
That Case Out: The Strategies of
Fučík s
Protocol,
Janáček
analyzes various
non-cooperative and counter-effective communicative stratagems utilized by
Fučík
that enabled him to twist some of the incriminating evidence into fic¬
tion, to the immediate benefit of many of his comrades. And it was undoubt¬
edly
Fučík s
literary prowess that contributed to his surprising success in the
high stakes game he played with the Gestapo.
The analysis is followed by a reader-friendly version of
Fučík s
final
Gestapo protocol in Czech prepared by Pavel
Janáček
and Michael
Wöger¬
bauer
who prefaced it by a query as to whether this police record should be
read as a continuation of
Fučík s
Reportage or vice versa. The much belat¬
ed publication of this key historical document should finally put to rest all
qualms about
Fučík s
behavior in Gestapo captivity from which most of the
anti-Fučík s
myths drew their impetus.
A German historian,
Stephan Zwicker,
caps the second section with a sur¬
vey of the Western reception of
Fučík s
work. According to his Echo of
Fučík s
Reportage in Western Europe and Overseas, the success of Czecho¬
slovak propaganda in this part of the world was rather limited.
The final section of the book focuses on three professions to which
Fučík
dedicated most of his creative energies: journalism, criticism, and literary his¬
tory. Its first two chapters elucidate the manner of
Fučík s
reporting about the
Soviet Union in the
1930s.
Too Fast, Too Fast, Too Strong Is the Impression :
Enthusiasm and Ecstasy of Julius
Fučík
in His Texts from the Soviet Union -
the title of
Tomáš Glanc s
study-scrutinizes
Fučík s
journalism through the
prism of the author s attitude toward the reported reality. In
Fučík s
Soviet
vision, as
Glanc
puts is, all rotates with a psychedelic speed and compiles
itself into a fascinating kaleidoscope.
Julius
Fučík
in the Soviet Union, or Journeys to-and-fro , by
Ondřej
Sládek
offers a narratological and generic analysis of
Fučík s
reporting from
the USSR. The paper draws extensive parallels between the studied texts and
classical
utopias
like
More s
Utopia and Campanella s
La città
del sole.
3981_____________________________________________________________
The subject of
Lukáš Borovička s
inquiry, The Eternal Childhood,
or
Fučík s
Dream of Communism, is
Fučík s
unfinished novel The Genera¬
tion before Peter.
Borovička
places it, together with the author s entire Wel¬
tanschauung, within the broad framework of the history of ideas, focusing on
three thematic fields: romance, political engagement, and democracy.
František A. Podhajský s
chapter presents
Fučík
as an
antipode
of anoth¬
er prominent critic of his generation. Criticism of Julius
Fučík
and
Václav
Černý
concludes with a seemingly paradoxical observation that albeit
Fučík s
literary reviews are more ideologically oriented than
Černý s,
they, neverthe¬
less, remain more attuned to the formal aspects of verbal art.
The third section concludes with Peter Steiner s The Memoirs of
Světozor:
Fučík
as a Pioneer of Periodical Studies which documents how
Fučík s
in-
depth analyses of a prominent 19th century Czech journal anticipated, to some
degree, the recent rise of a new academic discipline. Its playful paraphrase of
Fučík s
most canonic words, Literary historians, watch! —the last sentence
of Steiner s intellectual foray—seems as well an appropriate closing remark
about the purport of the entire collection.
The volume is appended with a number of relevant historical documents.
In addition to the Gestapo protocol mentioned above it also includes, a hith¬
erto unpublished survey of modern Czech literature written by
Fučík
in
1928
but left unfinished by him; an array of pictures and texts, Good Morning,
Gustina! comprised of largely unknown photographs, messages and letters
between the
Fučík
couple; and, finally, the bibliography of
Fučík s
oeuvre
from
1919
to
1942
prepared by
Michaela Pohlreichová
on the basis of
Gusta
Fučíková s
inventories.
