Summary
The aim of this postdoctoral dissertation is to present two collections of songs
by Raul Koczalski written in
1920-21
to poems by
Rainer
Maria
Rilke - Von
der Liebe
op.
99
(seven songs for a low voice with piano accompaniment) and
Vier Gedichte von Rainer Maria Rilke op. 102
(four songs for a low voice with
piano).
As it is an essence of a postdoctoral dissertation to introduce new values and
facts into a scientific field, I have decided to bring back, if only in a limited way,
the forgotten and undervalued songs by Raul Koczalski in an aspect of their
correlation with the lyrics.
In the first part of my dissertation I present the portrait of the composer,
including his biography.
In the second one I concentrate on the analysis, genesis, and comparisons of
the two collections of songs. The main purpose though, was to stress the degree
of correlation between the music and the lyrics. I wanted to emphasize some
details, when seen as being obvious are often trivialized, but when performing
these songs they become prominent.
I did not want to go deep into interpretational problems in order to avoid
creating any standards or performing canons. The very focus on some correla¬
tions
-
differences as well as similarities supplemented with my own recording
of the songs could be a good starting point of some further elaboration of the
topic, and, I also hope, an inspiration for other singers.
The songs which are discussed in this work are truly exceptional pieces. At
first they may seem to be short and easy which is, however, quite misleading.
The emotional message they contain, regardless their duration or tessitura, is
surely a real challenge both for the singer and the pianist. Although domination
of the music over the lyrics is evident, both performers have equal roles in
shaping the character of the music and they create one common musical plane
where it is hard to select just one soloist. Seven opuses composed by Raul
Koczalski to Rilke s poems do not seem to be a coincidental choice but a cogent

decision of an open and very aware man who is ready to share his emotional
self. In these songs he makes an attempt to describe poetry with the language of
music
-
a commentary provided by a sensitive artist so needed to understand
this ambiguous poetry. Despite such a sublime theme, Koczalski does not fall
into cheap
sentimentalism, nor
does he resolve to naive illustrative means. His
impressionistic musical language, though still deeply rooted in the romantic
music, coupled with a symbolic word, conveys perfectly those sensuous fleeting
moments.
In the second part I include my own translations of
Rainer
Maria
Rilke s
poems without which understanding and empathizing with their meaning jointly
expressed by the composer and the poet alike, would have been very difficult.
Also the recording of these songs makes such understanding much easier.
Koczalski-Rilke, an intriguing couple in itself, but when an experienced singer
with some awareness of their biographies joins their musical dialogue, then it
suddenly comes to life and displays its full palette of colours.
The recording which supplements my dissertation contains the total of

of which is directly connected to this paper and the other six are to
complement this example of Raul Koczalski s lieder

It has seemed right to me to present an
example of his songs composed to lyrics by another poet
-
the one whose poetry
over the ages has inspired so many composers
- Johann
Wolfgang Goethe, the
author of The alder king
{ Erlkönig ).
Those poems influenced by the culture of
the Middle and the Far East, so different from Rilke s poetry, show clearly Raul
Koczalski as a competent and sensitive interpreter of poetry, who is open to
different music styles and ready to enter into poetic word in order to feel and
understand its message.
