historical-demographic characteristics
of the urban population of the Hetmanschyna
in the second half of the
XVIII 1
century
In the book the urban population of Hetmanshyna regimental
cities in the second half of
XVIII
century in studied on the terms
of historical demography. The life of urban dwellers is described on
the basis of categories such as age and sex, childhood and old age,
marriage and widowed, birth and death. The main heroes of the
study are small people of different ages, gender and class, who
were born, lived or died in the walls of the early modern city.
The use of demographic approach and proven methodology
gives us the opportunity to speak on the language of demographics,
language that is specific and clear to researchers of different fields
and countries. This book has a lot of numbers and manipulates
a variety of factors, I believe that it can focus on the analysis
of serial events and social structures, and compare the various
phenomena of urban life. However, to avoid the pitfalls of
traditional quantitative history and not to lose the man in the
forest of statistics, considerable attention is paid to the studying
of individuals behavior. In particular, we consider various options
for such behavior, possible strategies and motivation. Most aspects
of the study are accompanied by specific examples from the lives
of real people, and demonstration of literary characters

In the spatial dimension book focuses around Nizhyn, Pereyaslav
and Starodub- three major cities of the regiment, that represent
different regions of Hetmanshyna with their own characteristics.
The main source of the research is General inventory of Left-bank
Ukraine of
1765-1769,
which shows in detail the various aspects

of the Ukrainian society and is the most informative source of
the mass registration. In terms of time period, the main attention
is paid to the second half of
XVIII
century
-
the time of active
introduction of educational ideals and the construction of well-
run Russian Empire.
Imperial modernization initiatives were introduced in
Hetmanshyna through the mediation of regimental towns, the latter
performing the functions of administrative and economic centers,
attracted incoming population, whose presence gave the specific
expression of the demographic face of the city. A characteristic
feature of the city (compared to the village) had a low percentage
of children at a much greater presence of people of childbearing
age. At the same time, fertility rates the Left bank Ukraine cities
were closer to European cities than to the villages or regiment
cities of European Russia. Fertility was not stable; its variations
could be caused by objective factors such as good harvest, famine,
drought, and epidemic. These factors might also influence child
mortality, which had huge sizes, though, in a city where one in
three deceased was a child of five, people had to get used to that
fact.
A child at that time was more likely to die than to live up
to five years, many of those who managed to survive this hell on
their own were forced to earn their living (especially orphans).
They performed the role of workers, students, and starting with
a 10-year-old age appeared in the mass of official documents as
employees and received a decent compensation. In this regard, one in
four urban children of this age lived in someone else s family. Their
masters were guided by mercantile considerations, operational
requirements, or feeling akin, or by the need for enforcement of
patriarchal roles. In this perspective, childhood in that time was
short and harsh.
Regimental city was inherent in the low (relative to the
villages) level of marriage and, consequently, more idling of the
population of working age. The high concentration of single men,
the soldiers on duty, visitors on duties created such a thing as
actual prostitution. The average age of marriage of the urban
population was higher compared with rural area, these indexes of
marriages in the surveyed cities was close to the European type.

Important participants
in the marriage market were widowers and
widows, who immediately after the death of a partner looked for a
mate. At the same time, many widows were lonely, so the city was
home to the regimental for a significant number of single women
and single men .
Strategies for their behavior were directed to avoid starvation
and a lonely old age, physiological and psychological trait which
conventionally have

years of age. It was common to the majority
of urban residents calling themselves sick, weak from old age or
senile. It is therefore not surprising that people older 89-years,
who officially regarded as long-lived ( centennial ), met on the
streets extremely rarely.
The demographic face of the cities was determined by the
Cossacks and commoners who made up the bulk of the population.
But characteristic, specific features to that face gave representatives
of the urban social groups such as merchants, clergymen, beggars,
or ethnic communities such as Nizhyn Greeks. These features are
well displayed in the historical and demographic factors, indicators
for which the population of regimental towns
Hetman
differed
significantly from the population of cities in European Russia, as
well as regimental villages, and were closer to the population of
cities in Central and Western Europe. However, the last ones in
the second half of
XVIII
century were on the threshold of the
demographic revolution, while in the urban society of Left-bank
Ukraine, it will start much later.
