ABSTRACT
Life experience of Stan
Zugravul
began in
Răşinari,
somewhere in
the second-third decade of the XVIIIth century and ended most probably
in
Orăştie,
subsequently to
7
April
1794.
He made his debut, though less
clear and illustrable, in the team of Grigore
Ranite
employed in Tismana,
Vădeni
and
Glogova,
that we may consider amongst the most important
sites from the period of Austrian domination in
Oltenia,
financed by the
influent Glogoveanu family. Following two decades and half from his
life and activity are impenetrable, even speculations being vitiated by
disappearance of works in which he is supposed to have been involved.
Then, we find him, also to south of the Carpathians, where he is definitely
attested in
1760-1761,
after which he came back in Transylvania, settling
down in
Orăştie.
We did not identify anything to connect his destiny
from
Banat,
but this does not exclude his travel there, accompanied by
Ranite
brothers or painters Nedelcu and
Şerban Popovici
or even on his
own, as we know so little about absolutely any subject from the history
of those times, and biographies can be recorded only by few flashes. For
artists, in fact, almost the only documents are their creations, preserved
in a very small number and following rules that tempt the chaotic. From
this point of view, Stan is one of the few lucky ones whose creation may
be known along a time interval that covers almost his whole career.
Within his psychological profile, modesty seems to have played a
quite minor role, ever since the beginning manifesting a real thirst to see
his name imprinted on the results of his endeavours, even if this
consisted in making curtains or some borders. Yet, impetuousness of
affirmation was associated with special affinity towards part of members
of his family and we can say that only because of this need of perio¬
dically entrusting them to God s watch we know today the bloodline of
one of the most important Romanian painters of the XVIIIth century (we
named here his brother Iacov). Also, due to his signatures in which are
mentioned name and occupation of father, priest
Radu,
we can definitely
say that there is no kinship relation between his sons and
„Radu Zugra¬
vul
ot
Răşinar
signer in the middle of XVIIIth century of an icon of
Mother of God with Child of exceptional artistic quality, unfortunately his
only known work. As Stan was very careful when recommended ever
since the beginning of his career, it is unbelievable that he might have
omitted to mention that he was son of painter, if this would have been
the reality.
Stan s contribution to spiritual and artistic development of Transyl-
vanian Romanians does not only involve his own creation, which rarely
excelled by radiance, although he showed great talent. It consists,
especially, in the heritage that he left, by the group from
Saliste,
and
particularly, by that from
Laz,
to that segment of art that remained
attached to tradition. As very correctly observed academician Marius
Porumb,
models of Stan, reproduced until late in the XIXth century,
represent the direct connection between authentic Brancovan art and its
rural
dérivâtes
spread more and more frequently through painting on
glass.
