Late Neolithic Funnel Beaker Culture Communities
in
Kuj
avia.
The issue of influences from the circle
of the Baden culture (Summary)
The primary aim of the present publication has been to lay the foundations under the
taxonomical and chronological systematics of the youngest formations of the Funnel
Beaker culture (henceforth, TRB) in Kujavia, including conditioning and development
of the processes of lowland Eneolithization on the basis of the civilisational patterns
from the circle of the Baden culture.
The issue of the Badenisation process has so far been examined in a rather aspectual
manner, within the scope of studies on the development of particular, regional forma¬
tions of the TRB. In the present study the current stage of recognizing the phenomena is
summarized and an attempt has been undertaken to order and verify the findings within
the scope of taxonomy. Due to the unification of the filing means of the manifestations
of the developmental trend under study as well as the recognition and systematizing its
representative elements, it was possible to define the diagnostic sets serving to synchro¬
nize the lowland phenomena (also with regards to Eneolithic and Eneolithized old up¬
land background). On the basis of so prepared foundation, a genetic and chronological
characteristics was developed, taking under consideration the issue of participation and
the role of patterns from the societies of the Western faction of the TRB communities
(from the regions between the
Saale
and Elbe rivers).
The territorial scope of the work embraces the lowland area of adapting Eneolithic
patterns genetically linked to the Carpathian circle of the Baden culture, narrowing it
down to the diagnostic area of the eastern great valleys segment of the TRB ecumenics
(Kujavia). Also the context of remaining culture forming centres of the
Warta,
Oder as
well as the
Saale
and Elbe river basins area was taken into consideration.
The chronological scope
-
approx.
3600/3500-2400/2350
ВС
-
was delimited by:
caesura of initial stadium of the analysed development trend of the great valleys
Beaker societies, indicated by the appearance of
Boleráz
and
Salzmünde
groups as
well as the caesura of the decline of the
Radziejów
group of the TRB.
290
The basis of the taxonomical studies, embracing the analysis of the structure and dy¬
namics of formal transformations within the limits of the particular time frames, consti¬
tuted ceramic materials of the TRB from its late developmental phases connected with
the cultural trend under study.
Due to limited cognitive values of the loose findings and scarce nonspecific assem¬
blages, the analyses were mainly based on well documented representative sets of
sources guided by the assessment of their analytic usability concerning: the context of
deposition, quantity and cultural and chronological coherence.
The work consists of four main chapters, each comprising an introduction and
conclusions.
Chapter one entitled The Eneolithic, Eneolithization, Badenisation
-
perspective
of the cultural background of the lowland transformations and their depictions so far
undertakes an attempt to assess the level of recognizing the phenomena of Badenisation
in the light of the summarised history of the research on Eneolithization of the TRB
(chapter
I.A.)
and research and current state of the discussion on issues of Eneoli¬
thization of the Lowland (chapter
LB.).
Moreover, the cultural background of Cen¬
tral-East Europe in the late and declining Neolithic period was drawn (I.C.), with a con¬
cise description of the
protocivilisation
of the Eneolithic of the Carpathian Basin and
the old upland Eneolithized ecumenics (i.e. south-east and Silesian-Moravian groups
of the TRB).
Achieving the set aims in the work required the unification of the analytical assump¬
tions and norms of describing late Beaker materials as well as devising bench mark
source base what was presented in chapter II entitled Late-Neolithic TRB in Kujavia
—
taxonomic
and typochronological perspective .
Theoretical and methodical assumptions, analytical norms and source bases were
specified in part
ILA.
The specifics of archaeology resulting from the manner of observing culture
through the prism of its material remains, from the very beginning of the discipline de¬
velopment has determined a particular research approach. The way of treating the is¬
sues connected with relicts of past societies and attempts to specify their importance in
the process of recognition and reconstruction of the past have significantly been modi¬
fied along with the change of the paradigm accepted by the researchers. Currently the
validity of undertaking attempts to pursuit and define the cultural autonomy on the basis
if reading material features of archaeological artefacts is beyond doubt. Empirical veri¬
fication of the premises of existence
-
within specified regional boundaries
-
of real so¬
cial and cultural communalities is possible due to broadening of the scope of analytic
procedures beyond the frames of formal assessment, including a range of beyond
sources data and formulating new assumptions.
The research procedures acquired for the work constituted the explication
-
both in
the conceptual and substantial frames
-
in line with the experience devised in the
Poznań
society. The presented way of the taxonomical approach includes the features
of artefacts carrying culture-forming significance, integrating i.e. features of artefacts
having
-
in the users perception
-
a status of social and cultural auto-identifiers.
Addi-
291
tionally,
a crucial assumption is regarded of an existing relation between the mental
sphere and the material level due to which material culture became a carrier of social in¬
formation
-
a peculiar communication means
-
serving simultaneously the function of
a stabilizer of tradition, allowing to underline the cultural distinction of a group.
In line with the so presented concept of comprehending material aspect of culture, ce¬
ramic artefacts
-
created and used in a particular social context
-
can be perceived as an
information transmission carrier, in which a special role is played by ornamentation. Its
symbolic meaning
-
unlike the form of vessels, determined mostly by the usage function
-
constitutes the expression of the particular social aspects and is realized in the form of a
particular style creating general frames of the information flow. Therefore, the stylistic
variability can be regarded as the expression of the social strategy and at the same time as
a communication means serving to express cultural and group identification.
So formulated initial assumption allowed to use in creating the scheme of periodization
systematics of the youngest stages of the lowland TRB, the method of analysing the ag¬
glomeration, correspondence and seriation, with regards to adequately hierarchized
ceramic data. The obtained results were confronted with the findings of a detailed in¬
dicative analysis regarding decorative components distinguished in the late Neolithic
stylistic cycles, used so far, in systematizing procedures (chapter
И.В.).
Due to the so channelled selection of evaluation criteria it became possible to distin¬
guish diagnostic sets for separate stylistic trends: Konary-Papros and
„Radziejów ,
corresponding to separate, archeologically distinguished cultural units.
Because setting time frames and creating them chronological sequences is of the key
importance in interpreting past cultural processes chapter III (entitled „Taxonomical
and typochronological findings versus 14C Datings.
Chronometrie
record of the Badeni-
zation phenomena ) undertakes the issue of the relative chronology of the Baden cul¬
ture and the Badenisation phenomena. It was presented with regard to the genetic centre
(Carpathian Basin and near
Donau
river centres) as well as northern boundaries of the
Baden circle presenting the findings arrived at so far in this scope (chapter
Ш.А.).
For the issues of the lowland Badenisation not only the chronological findings
concerning documented in the Polish Lowlands indicators of far-reaching interactions
of Beyond-Carpathian societies were of crucial importance. Also societies of forma¬
tions of the northern Sudeten and Carpathian foreground were of a crucial importance
in the processes of further, northern transmission of the Eneolithization impulses on the
areas of the Oder and Vistula rivers basin. Therefore, chapter III.B. contains the chro¬
nology of phenomena occurring in the Eneolithized zone of the highland strip in south¬
ern Poland reached by direct influence of centres of Baden culture circles.
Part III.C. is devoted to a confrontation of
taxonomie
findings with the evaluation of
the register of newly gained, for the TRB sets from regions of Kujavia,
Pałuki,
Wielkopolska
(Greater Poland) and the Lower Oder basin, radiocarbon
chronometry
markings.
The perspective of chronology was summarised indicating the following time
frames of the lowland Badenisation phenomena, associated in the Kujavian agglom¬
eration with three trends of the local TRB development:
292
- 3500-2600
ВС
-
Radziejów
group;
- 3000-2350
ВС
-
Konary-Papros subgroup of the Eastern group;
- 2890-2660
ВС
-
Żabno
subgroup?
(Żabno
type) of the Eastern group
In the areas beyond Kujavia the time frames of the formations in which the symp¬
toms of adapting the patterns from the Baden culture circles were recorded, were syn¬
chronized with the time brackets:
- 3400-2550
ВС
-
Mrowino group (Greater Poland and
Pałuki);
- [350071/3380-2870
ВС
-
Ustowo group (the Lower Oder Basin).
An important place in the studies within the scope of formal and stylistic
syncretism observed in pottery of Kujavian formations of the late Neolithic TRB
have always been attached to the aspects connected with the influx to the Polish
Lowland of the western cultural inspirations from the Beaker societies of the
Mittelelbe-Saale region.
The issues pertaining to the western context of the discussed processes and parallel
conditioning of the development of the societies of the late Neolithic TRB were in¬
cluded in part IV.A. of chapter IV entitled Societies of late Neolithic cultures of the
Funnel Beaker culture in Kujavia
-
historical and cultural perspective .
In the history of interest of the western conditioning of developmental processes of
the TRB in the Oder and Vistula river basin, the presence of the western components
(in the form of characteristic forms of vessels of the
Michelsberg
culture, of decorating
stylistics pertaining to the ornamentation of the Waltenienburg-Bernburg formations)
were initially treated in the categories of lasting cultural relations between societies of
the Upper and Middle Elbe and Oder river basins. Developed already in the horizons of
the early and classical TRB, they were to integrate and shape the image of the great val¬
ley territorial community. Gradually, along with the growing material base, it was no¬
ticed in sets of the late Neolithic TRB from Kujavia and Greater Poland
(Radziejów
and
Mrowino groups of the TRB) also symptoms of traditions from the circle of
Salzmünde
and
Tiefstichkeramik
cultures, being ahead of times
-
as it was then believed
-
develop¬
ment of the Walternienburg-Bernburg formations.
The results of the conducted in this work
taxonomic
and chronological analyses
confronted with the latest findings concerning cultural situation in the
Saale
and Elbe
river basins in the period of late Neolithic, validated a few significant remarks concern¬
ing the possibility of the genetic and chronological interpretation of the western asso¬
ciations, observed in the materials of the late TRB in the Polish Lowlands.
In the view of the documented in the latest literature cultural complexity of the
western genetic background, the coexistence of its various cultural elements noting in
the
Radziejów
sets a trend of the Kujavian TRB, cannot be read in categories of the
significant chronological distinguishing mark. Moreover, undertaken in recent years
studies within the scope of recognizing northern peripheries of the Baden culture circle,
concerning
-
in a specific way
-
the issues of the Baden influences on stylistics of the
Central Europe formations of the TRB, create a chance to verify a very cognitively in¬
spiring hypothesis of the western conditioning of the genesis of the Central European
lowland Badenisation phenomena.
293
In the view of stated coexistence with the components of the western decorative
component, early dated
(3500-3350
ВС)
stylistic expressions of the Baden corre¬
spondence (for which it is difficult to find any direct analogies in the assemblies from
Lesser Poland or Upper Silesia), suggested parallel direction of connections analysed in
the work of
Radziejów
styles constitutes an interesting research alternative.
The results of all conducted analyses and observations, confirmed the complex
character of the late Neolithic processes of the lowland transformation of the TRB,
manifested
-
in the analysed agglomeration of Kujavia
-
with a multi-stream nature of
its manifestations, visible in the material remains.
Chapter IV, of the conclusive character, contains an attempt of drawing the histori¬
cal background of the great valley trends processes of the lowland Badenisation and
characteristics representing its formations:
Radziejów
group, Konary-Papros subgroup
of the Eastern group and the
Żabno
type (representing the phenomena of syncretisation
on the verge of the TRB-Corded Ware culture (CWC)). Its consequent parts concern
also issues of cultural development continuity and regional mechanisms of contacts
with the Carpathian Basin during the Late Neolithic and the
Proto-Bronze
break.
In the view of all findings, ordering data within the range of taxonomy and chronol¬
ogy,
Radziejów
group seems to be representing a surprisingly early
-
situated in time
around
3500
ВС
-
beginning of the lowland trend of Badenisation.
Although in the confrontation with the results of comparative analysis of relative
chronology (e.g. indicating the presence of elements or ornaments, relating to Corded
Ware culture), I4C datings obtained for the analysed above representative artefacts
seem to be too early, still
-
carefully approaching the interpretation of reflected in the
material symptoms of stylistic syncretisation phenomena
-
indirect premises that vali¬
date the assumed ranges of dating can be indicated (compare findings of radiocarbon
chronology for the formations from Greater Poland and the Lower Oder Basin).
Particularly complex character of the
Radziejów stylistics
constitutes a confirma¬
tion of incredibly dynamic processes of transmission and cultural transformation which
occurred starting from the second half of the 4th millennium
ВС,
due to well developed,
vast and stable systems of interregional interactions.
Radziejów
group from the very start of its development was perceived to be an ad¬
vanced and polygenetic system, comprising multicultural and multigenetic traditions
-
manifested in a way mostly evident on the level of material culture and in the ritual
sphere (funeral). The highly developed syncretism of vessels decorations and ceremo¬
nial rites causes that it could be perceived as a new quality, different from its cultural
basis, from which it is said to have originated (i.e. Eastern group of the TRB). Neverthe¬
less, the observations concerning the adaptation connected with the cultural and chro¬
nological transformations of local models of culture does not allow any irrefutable con¬
clusions to be drawn, which would provide answers about both the origins of the group
and its connections determining its specificity.
It is very difficult to judge also the contributing factors and mechanisms of transfor¬
mation. It seems that lack of clear taxonomical and typological premises, recorded in
the form of tight formal and stylistic analogies of the pottery artefacts (interpreted in
294
accordance with set assumptions, in categories of crucial identifiers of the group iden¬
tity) that could suggest a particular, unified genetic area of the Badenised features of
the
Radziejów
formations, exclude one of the potential possibilities
-
generating
changes due to migration.
Most of registered Baden-like formal and ornamental features, in comparison
with their originals, have modified nature, suggesting that they reached the area of
Kujavia in the indirect way. However, despite ambiguities concerning the forms of
transferring ornamental tradition, from the scope of civilisational, organizational, eco¬
nomic and social achievements
-
among which the following should be mentioned: tight
connection of settlement with central Kujavia zone of black soils
(Inowrocław-Mątwy,
Kuczkowo, Lojewo); fortification of settlements (e.g. Opatowice
3);
the growing im¬
portance of mobile forms of animal husbandry together with an increase in relevance of
settlements located on trade routes; the development of rituals and the sacred-ritual
sphere of life, a major part of which can be ascribed to solar cult
-
the direction of cur¬
rent within the
Radziejów
group connections is not doubtful. On the pan-European
scale these influences are attributed more or less clearly to members of the Baden cul¬
ture societies.
In contrast to the specific symptoms of the dynamic trend of the exogenous transfor¬
mations, manifested within the frames of characterized above late TRB societies model
of culture, in case of trends connected with endogenous line of development, repre¬
sented by assemblages postulated in this study Konary-Papros subgroup, worth under¬
lying is the fact of a uniquely conservative maintaining local ornamental traditions.

Recognized due to conducted
taxonomie
and typological as well as chronological
analyses, linear conduct of processes of the stylistic changes, observed within the
frames of the indicated developmental chain , confirms endogenous character of two
autonomie
streams of the Konary-Papros cycle, distinguishing marks of the proposed
unit of
taxonomie
division, which genetically should be connected with eastern group
of TRB.
In relation with the communities of circle of the Baden culture and close to it old-up¬
land Beaker-Baden formations, societies identified with the Konary-Papros sub¬
group, indicated autonomy, actively participating
-
independently of
Radziejów
group
-
in functioning late Neolithic network of far reaching contacts. A special importance in
them should be attached to routes of the Oder and
Warta
River (it is certified by formal
and stylistic analogies recorded among others in Kujavian and Silesian late Beaker
ceramic materials).
The last of the mentioned above trends of the TRB lowland Badenisation , con¬
nected with the recently distinguished type of
Żabno,
even if so far only scarcely recog¬
nized, should be identified with the phenomena of syncretisation of the Beaker-classical
CWC traditions, occurring in borders of Kujavia centre of intensive Eneolithization.
295
A serious barrier in the assessment of this phenomenon constitutes an isolated char¬
acter of the so far technological and stylistic observations, on the basis of which namely
the
refugai
trend of the late Beaker cultural transformations was distinguished. The
current findings do not allow to fully credibly state whether the modifications, observed
on the ceramic basis, document occurring on the verge of the TRB-CWC traditions mi¬
cro-regional trend of changes, connected with tightly spatially delimited area and or
whether they manifest specific cultural transformations model of a broader generally
lowland character concerning also beyond Kujavian Beaker societies of TRB Eastern
group.
The considered issue of lowland Badenisation processes in Kujavia is connected
with issues of mechanisms continuity of regional contacts with the Carpathian Basin on
the threshold of the Bronze Age. New data gained during the realisation of the presented
study, among the others series of radiocarbon dates for assemblages representing particu¬
lar Kujavia late Beaker formations, enables
taxonomie
and chronological ordering of
the archaeological record of the process in question. Relativisation, on this basis, frames
of particular developmental tendencies identified with the processes of Eneolithization of
the Lowland on the basis of Carpathian patterns form the circle of Baden culture, resulted
in the following final conclusions concerning:
-
the need of regarding the possibility of earlier than previously assumed i.e. already
in the period of approximately
2600
ВС
with which it should be linked the decline of
Radziejów
group, acquiring after it cultural succession in the active participation in the
network of bonds with chalcolithic South by societies of Globular Amphorae culture
(GAC);
-
emphasising cultural significance during the period of Eneolithization the sphere
of great valley Lowland society of Eastern group
-
in its Konary-Papros variation
representing the trend of selective Badenisation
-
surviving long after the stage of
disintegration of
Radziejów
group i.e. till the period of approximately
2350
ВС
(phase
IVB/VC);
-
regarding the
refugai
tendency represented by Corded Ware formations of the
Żabno
type from the period of
marginalisation
of Kujavian late Beaker societies par¬
ticipating in the lowland processes of adapting patterns of Carpathian Eneolithic
-
after
approximately
2900
ВС
-
manifesting itself among other in settlement entering the
zone of light soils.
The significance of the presented conclusions results mainly from the validation of
the thesis of
continuative
character of genetically complex mechanisms of cultural
transformation of the break of Neolithic and Early Bronze Age in Kujavia and directing
further research within the scope of recognizing processes conditioning the prologue of
Kujavian enclave of the
Donau
river basin Early Bronze civilization, in which local tra¬
ditions of Badenised TRB, GAC and CWC should be attached particular importance.
The total of presented above considerations confirmed univocally particularly com¬
plicated and complex character of occurring since the second half of IV millennium
ВС
processes of Eneolithization on the basis of patterns from the circle of Baden culture.
Civilisational impulses culturally activating societies of the great valley zone reached
296
the area of Lowland through different routes functioning within the frames of vast,
long-lasting networks of interregional connection stabilised allegedly by ritual sym¬
bolic factors. Badenisation occurring due to lasting system of inner group relations con¬
stituted a process of revaluating the culture of societies of Kujavia, finding its reflection
not only on the material level (in the stylistic of ceramics), but also in the ideological ap¬
proach sphere and almost in all spheres of social and economic life.
The specifics of the presented approach of the
taxonomic
chronological character as
well as the current state of recognition of many aspects of the analysed phenomena from
the period of the discussed civilisation breakthrough , would not allow tackling many
interesting issues, among which the most crucial include the questions concerning:
-the character of relations connecting the societies of two main
-
genetically dis¬
tinct- trends of lowland Eneolithization: embracing distinguished Kujavian formations
of Badenised TRB with representing
Mątwy
variation of Eneolithized structures;
-
mechanisms and factors generating economic, social and outlook changes, mani¬
fested in among others transformation of settlement, agrotechnical, manufacturing or
ritual rules, accompanying the creation of
Radziejów
group;
-
the significance of the processes generating the existence of especially complex
phenomena of cultural syncretisation, visible in the material culture and symbolic
Radziejów
group of TRB;
-
conditioning of autogenesis and the degree of autonomy of the trend of endoge¬
nous developmental line of Badenised societies embraced by the framework of the
distinguished Konary-Papros subgroup;
-
the cultural significance of the correlation with the assemblages representing dis¬
tinct social economic models
-
CWC and
G
AC
-
in the period of bloom as well as de¬
cline of Kujavian enclave of the lowland Badenisation .
Undeniably the above mentioned register does not exhaust all the collection of ques¬
tions and issues pertaining to the scale and character of the manifestations of the pro¬
cesses of the Beaker societies Badenisation in the Lowland, which appeared during
the presentation of the work but which due to its character and stated aims could not be
fully developed. It may constitute however a crucial premise streamlining further stud¬
ies in the scope of recognition of the great valley area of the Badenisation of the TRB
-
a some kind of starting point for programme research comprising subsequent aspect
of this fascinating cultural phenomena.
