the inhospitable arid parts of southern Africa, the Thirstland
Trekkers
settled in Angola in
1881.
Gradually the good relations they
initially had had with the Portuguese authority deteriorated and in
1928
some
2000
Angola Boers repatriated to South West Africa.

who remained in Angola sank into
oblivion, and were later described as "living fossils" and victims of
their own conservatism. Some did attempt to make a living from
mixed farming, transport riding and hunting, decades after this way
of life had died out elsewhere.
From
1958
the majority of the approximately
600
Afrikaners in
Angola repatriated to South West Africa. Only a few remained in
Angola. This group maintained their cultural identity under
difficult circumstances. After civil war broke out in Angola in
1975,
the last Afrikaners fled Angola, and after almost a century the bond
between the Angola Boers and Angola came to an end. Their inter¬
esting and colourful lives are described, and the possibility that the
so-called Trekgees (Trek Spirit) was the reason for their peregrin¬
ations is examined.
