THE PHILOSOPHY OF
edited by SHARIN
N.
ELKHOLY
Originating from underworld slang
—
the domain of hustlers, addicts, and
petty thieves
—
the term Beat began
as a reference to the beaten down or
downtrodden. To writer Jack
Kerouac,
it symbolized being at the bottom of
society s hierarchy and looking up.
Kerouac
introduced the phrase beat generation
in
1948
to characterize the underground,
anticonformist
youth gathering in New
York City at that time. Consisting of writers,
artists, and activists, the Beats became a
uniquely American cultural phenomenon
with a worldwide influence that introduced
new ways of interpreting visual art, music,
literature, politics, race and gender issues,
religion, and philosophy.
The Philosophy of the Beats explores the
Beats culture, lifestyle, and art in a variety
of philosophical contexts. The collection
analyzes the work and lives
—
both personal
and political
—
of prominent Beat writers
such as Jack
Kerouac,
Allen Ginsberg,
Diane
di
Frima,
and William S. Burroughs,
among many others. In various ways, the
Beat writers introduced their readers
to new beginnings, mythologies, and
frameworks for self-understanding through
the spontaneous and dynamic modes of
expression that came to mark both their
(CONTINUED ON BACK FLAP)
(CONTINUED FROM FRONT FLAP)
literary style and way of life. This volume
brings together noted Beat scholars and
academics to illuminate the significance
of the cultural movement through a range
of philosophical perspectives. Drawing on
critical race theory, feminist theory, film
theory, environmentalism, existentialism,
and Eastern and Western philosophies, The
Philosophy of the Beats recasts common
Beat themes in terms of their philosophical
undertones and helps simplify theoretical
concepts. With an in-depth study of
the Beats complex subculture and the
evolution of their politics and ethics, The
Philosophy of the Beats establishes an
informed view of the movement and the
alienated sectors of society who adopted it.
Rejecting conventional customs of living,
the Beat generation turned inward,
expressing themselves in new and dynamic
ways with an intensity and vitality all their
own, using art to showcase their radical
attitudes and beliefs. Their work reflected
an ethos of passion that inspired many
Americans during the
1950s,
and their
philosophy resonated with much of the
nation s youth and has influenced the work
of generations.
