This book has long been regarded as a classic. It is one of the most entertaining and
informative books ever written on the subject of Scotch whisky. First published in
1951
it covers the beginnings of distilling through the development of the craft while
retaining a focal point around Balmenach Distillery in Cromdale where the author s
forebears were founders and owners for generations. Along the way the reader is
introduced to some of the great characters who have lived and worked in the Scotch
whisky industry including the likes of James Buchanan, Tommy Dewar and Peter
Mackie along with lesser-known but no less important figures such as Willie Ross,
who is credited with saving the industry after the failure of the Pattison brothers of
Leith in the late 1890s.
Throughout his remarkable life Bruce Lockhart s love of Scotch and its value to the
Scottish community was well known. His views on governmental interference in the
rightful access to the national tipple are perhaps even more relevant today when the
total tax on a standard-strength bottle of Scotch represents over
70%
of the price
paid. To Bruce
Lockhart
Scotch was not a mere commodity to raise revenue for the
exchequer, but a life blood both cultural and social, as important to the welfare of
the Scottish nation as the land, the water and the air are. These sentiments run clearly
throughout this book and it is this passion that makes Scotch such an enjoyable read.
Now graced with a foreword by Dave Broom, this eighth edition carries the preface
written for the seventh edition by the author s son, Robin, who died in
2008,
and thus
retains a contemporaneous significance to
1995,
when it was published. To bring this
edition forward to the present day, the publisher has added material concerning the
events in the industry since then.
Robert Bruce
Lockhart (1887-1970)
was primarily a diplomat and held posts in the
Foreign Office serving in Russia during WW1 where he was accused of plotting to
assassinate Lenin and imprisoned in the Kremlin until exchanged for Maxim Litvinov.
He then served in Czechoslovakia and worked in the late
1920s
for Beaverbrook
Newspapers until he took up writing full time. He returned to the FO in World War
II were he was Director-General of Political Warfare. Following the war, his writing
output was prolific. After his death two volumes of his diaries were published in
1973
and
1980.
He was reputedly the inspiration for Ian Fleming s creation, James Bond.
