SUMMARY
We tend to evaluate the work of a museum basing on its exter¬
nal activities: exhibitions, symposia, museum classes, workshops,
etc. Usually, we know very little about the nature of everyday work in
these institutions. As a result, in the common belief one finds many
stereotypical opinions concerning activities undertaken by (rarely vi¬
sited) museums and
-
above all
-
about the work of museologists; as
a matter of fact, according to some, since exhibitions are prepared only
once in a while, it remains a secret what they actually do. In particular,
very little is known about the scientific work and research realized by
museums that are usually associated only with a low
-
in comparison
with universities
-
number of scientific publications.
In fact, in Poland, very little is also known about the character of
non-European collections held by our museums, as well as about con¬
ditions of their formation. Moreover, some are willing to criticize the
work of museums and museologists, practically without knowing the
reality, criteria or conditions of their work, nor
-
as a matter of fact
-
the essence of the addressed subject. Reviews of museum exhibitions,
published in the press, very rarely contain in-depth analysis concern¬
ing the merits.

Summary
The book aims to present the specificity of activities undertaken by
Polish museums holding non-European collections and the tasks that
are put before museologist employed there who are responsible for
scientific care of these objects. The author reveals the nature of their
work and its implications. Basically, the analysis focuses on possibili¬
ties and ways of using ethnographic collections from non-European
countries, gathered in state museums in Poland, and on the role that
is played by the staff of professional departments, covering cultures of
other continents than Europe, in shaping the nature of such activities.
The author draws attention to the problem of diversity of these mu¬
seums, considering their history, collections and undertaken activi¬
ties; and
-
by describing the character of several selected institutions
-
she also pinpoints the reasons for existing differences. Moreover,
she asks, how the character of these collections determines scientific
and educational actions of the museum, and
-
as a result
-
how does
it influence museologist s work.
The author conducted research in eight Polish museums with eth¬
nographic non-European collections. She selected them basing on
available literature, her own experience and observations earned dur¬
ing the years of working in ethnographic museum1. Ultimately, she
chose museums that were by their name ethnographic, or institutions
where non-European collection were clearly separated and constantly
supplemented and developed scientifically, and where the character of
the collection was by definition ethnographic, namely: it covered all
aspects of culture, instead of being limited to one aspect or cultural
domain; as well as institutions that (going beyond the frameworks of
ethnography) gave other collections, for instance, natural an equally
treatment. In particular, she focused on museums with similar oper¬
ating conditions, i.e. functioning under the Ministry of Culture and
National Heritage, or local governments of Provinces and cities. These
were: The Ethnographic Museum in Krakow, The State Ethnographic

years she ran the Department of People s Cultures of Non-European Countries
at that Museum.

Museum in Warsaw, Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography in
Lodz; ethnographic museums that function as departments of the
National Museums: The Ethnographic Museum in Gdansk, The Eth¬
nographic Museum in
Poznan
and The Maritime Museum in Szczecin,
City Museum in
Zory
and The Asia and Pacific Museum in Warsaw.
The study did not include missionary and private museums, due to
their very different, specific nature, requiring separate research and
an entirely different methodological approaches and scope.
In selected institutions, the author has collected archival materi¬
als, and she conducted interviews with her colleagues-museologists.
Long-term professional contacts with non-European museologists
and friendships established while working in the field of museology
constituted a starting point in the course of searching for interview¬
ees. The author reflected on the manner and conditions, in which the
museum employees work, on their achievements, but also concerns
and professional dreams2.
The mentioned research was conducted using the method of un¬
structured interviews with museologists who work (or worked) with
non-European ethnographic collections. However, it included a list of
issues (the same for all respondents) designed to direct the narratives.
This outline covered, among other problems: professional education,
paths that led the interviewees to museums, the scope and history
of their interests for non-European cultures, methods implemented
in the course of museum work, character of conducted research and
created studies. Another important source of information proved to
be: bibliographies, biographies, non-printed studies, notes, memories,
but also scripts for exhibitions and scientific catalog cards transmitted
to the author by museologists. Their authorial texts and documents
concerning museum archives, publications on the history and projects
realized by the museums were also analyzed.

This was a diverse group of informants. It included professionally active museolo¬
gists and those who retired, as well as those who left the field of museology for other
professions; persons holding (formerly or currently) managerial positions and so-called
series employees ; ethnologists, art historians and a geographer.

Another issue raised in the conversations concerned the predispo¬
sitions that (according to the informants) one should have in order
to perform the profession of museologist well. At the same time, the
respondents expressed some critical opinions concerning current op¬
portunities and conditions; they also declared potential characteris¬
tics of the institution, in which museologists would be able to pursue
their professional tasks fully. And these very remarks gave the picture
of a good museum .
The author conducted

museums employees and

with persons specializing in the study of
non-European cultures and cooperating in some ways with museums.
To the collected materials, she joined memoirs written by one of the
representatives of the group of museologists as well as her own profes¬
sional experiences and some related documents.
Research, just described, was conducted between
2004
and
2010.
The part concerning scientific activity of the museums was carried
out under a grant admitted by the Ministry of Science and Higher
Education for the years
2005-2008,
entitled: Scientific and Research
Achievements of Polish Ethnographic Museums in Understanding
Non-European Cultures 3. The fact that the author herself worked as
a museologist for
18
years, and that she still feels (to some extent)
a representative of this profession, undoubtedly facilitated the work
on this book. Knowing the character of this occupation, she knew
what to ask, and where and how to search for materials.
Conclusively, the study was based on participant observations,
materials obtained in the course of interviews, documents, scientific
publications and various types of notes provided by the interviewees,
as well as on the resources of scientific archives (accounts from expedi¬
tions, archival materials concerning history and activities of the muse¬
ums, etc.) and substantive documentation (scientific catalogs, inven¬
tory books, etc.) or organizational documents (reports, lists, etc.) of
the selected museum. Several publications (discussing collections and

activities of the museums) also served as an important source.
Chiefly, the book covers the period
1989 - 2007.
According to the
author, political changes of the last decade of the XXth Century cre¬
ated some new and significant opportunities for non-European stud¬
ies. However, extensive information regarding the earlier period were
necessary to obtain the background for comparison.
The first, introductory chapter of the book discusses the history
of formation of the idea of Polish ethnographic museology and speci¬
ficity of museums with non-European collections. This allowed the
author to present specific possibilities arising from the character of
existing collections, and trace complex links between the history of
museums and their present activity. After a preliminary analysis of
the collected materials, five museums were selected whose lots, orga¬
nization, collections and actions were diverse, but
-
at the same time
-
representative of Polish museology specializing in non-European
cultures. Describing their history and characterizing their contempo¬
rary (i.e. existing in the
XXI
Century) collections helped the author
to identify complex relationships between gathered pieces and their
history. On the other hand, presentation of selected examples of edu¬
cational projects and exhibitions realized by these institutions, cre¬
ated an opportunity to show how the history of museums and the
character of collections determine possible use of these collections in
the substantive activities, and helped the author to depict the condi¬
tions and nature of museologist s work.
Fundamentally, the author seeks to answer the following research
questions:

Whether or not, how, and to what extent does the history and
organization of the museum determine the nature of existing
collection and the possibilities and ways of using it?
2.
What role in shaping the nature of museum collections and acti¬
vities is played by the specialized staff? The author tried to deter¬
mine the specifics of this kind of work, and she wished to depict
how museologists interpret non-European cultures. Therefore,
she was looking for answer to the following questions:

What, according to the interlocutors, is the essence of museolo-
gist s work and what distinguishes it from activities undertaken
by other ethnologists/cultural anthropologists?

What personal and intellectual qualities should a good museolo¬
gist possess?
The book consists of five separate chapters. The first one is devoted
to preliminary explanation of the subject matter of the research, in
other words: it is an attempt to determine the essence of ethnographic
museums and none-European collections.
The author tried to define the terms, and clarify the tasks placed
before them, mainly by referring to the history of Polish ethnographic
museology. She also drew a general picture of Polish contemporary
ethnographic museology concerning non-European cultures. The sec¬
ond chapter discusses the work and character of the collections in five
selected museum, focusing on the mentioned period:
1989-2007.
Next two chapters consider museum employees who take scientific

care of non-European collections, and involve characteristics of their
scientific research and popularizing projects. These chapters are main¬
ly based on interviews with museologists, supplementary materials
and scientific documentation which was collected in all eight studied
museums and found in related publications. The last chapter contains
opinions and comments of the interlocutors concerning professional
dreams and museum daily life, that is: problems and needs encoun¬
tered at work. Moreover, it presents characteristics, created on the
basis of mentioned materials, of a potential good museum , and in¬
dicates features that a good museologist should have.
The study shows clearly how the nature of a collection
-
the way
it was acquired, its subject matter, structure and degree of scientific
description determine the possibilities of conducting, on its basis, sci¬
entific and educational activities. It is the quality and the size of exist¬
ing collection, that determine the themes of realized exhibitions, but
also the topics of lectures, museum lesson, workshops and published
scientific studies. Whereas the history of each collection, and its char¬
acter determine the methods and prospects of scientific description.
Presented materials shed some light on the reasons that fully jus¬
tify the existence of Polish museums specializing in non-European cul¬
tures. Due to current limitations of the curriculums, extensive actions
designed to promote the region and the idea of a little homeland ,
these institutions become not merely necessary, but
-
as the author
suggests
-
essential. There is a need to maintain balance between
learning about the world and forming an attitude towards others
who nowadays are not only a couple of hours by plane away, but just
right across the proverbial field bounds. It is ethnographic museums
that realize projects concerning cultural diversity of the world, ideas
of multiculturalism and
intercultural
dialogue.
The book indicates some of the features that determine the distinc-
tiveness and specificity of non-European ethnographic museology.
Differences in the nature of substantive activities undertaken in this
area can be seen even at the very level of acquiring collections. Field
studies are exceptionally difficult: they require both extraordinary

termination of the museologists and a careful professional prepara¬
tion (not to mention) language skills and productivity when it comes
to finding resources and organizing the research. In addition, complet¬
ing data form interviews, observations and field documentation (in
Poland feasible and common) in the case of non-European countries
proves to be extremely difficult, and often simply impossible.
Nevertheless, possibilities of shaping collection s character depend
largely on: substantive program of each museum, position of non-
European pieces and their importance for the general concept of de¬
velopment and of course, financial situation of each institution. Pre¬
sented materials prove that the best method to create a collection is to
gather objects in the field ; and this should be done by professionally
prepared researchers cooperating closely with a particular museum
-
that is: employees or recognized scientific authorities who implement
a previously prepared purchase plan.
Moreover, collected data helped the author to define the role play¬
ed in museum activities by the professional staff. Materials showed
clearly that employees interests, knowledge, experiences and attitude
exert a decisive influence on how the objects are acquired, scientifical¬
ly described and visualized on exhibitions, or presented during other
actions of educational nature. At the same time, presented overview
of research achievements of the museologists confirmed the thesis
claiming that object is the basis and the main subject of their intere¬
sts. However, museum object is usually only a starting point for fur¬
ther research including different areas and aspects of culture. Hence,
museologists, in their inquiry, are not restricted to the physicality of
objects. On the contrary, they penetrate deep layers of meaning; they
explore and define the place that a given object has within culture.
Therefore, gathered material demonstrates that what we collect in
the field of ethnography of non-European societies, how and to what
extent we describe it, and release it, is without a doubt strongly influ¬
enced by the history of the museum, its organization and authorities
that set priorities. But equally important, if not the most significant,
is the professional staff. On museologists way of seeing the world and

culture, methods of research adopted by these people, on their imagi¬
nation, attitude, professionalism, integrity and commitment depends
the most. Moreover, presented material allowed the author to depict
certain characteristics that, according to the interviewees, a good mu-
seologist dealing with non-European cultures should have.
Museologist
you are born with. You have to be inquisitive, thoro¬
ugh and careful; you should be a bit of a collector and a little bit of an
investigator; you ought to treat the work you do as vocation and not
merely as a profession. And above all
-
you have to like museums and
objects. You should understand them, take care of them, give them the
maximum amount of your time and attention. You must understand
and respect other cultures. You must also like people and have a good
contact with them; you must respect the audience, striving to meet its
highest expectations. Optimal situation is when one combines profes¬
sion with passion and fondness. It is also important to identify with
your own institution. Only this way, it is possible to obtain satisfac¬
tory results in terms of: collecting, scientific research and education.
On the other hand, according to the interviewees, ideal museum
specializing in non-European ethnography should, in the first place,
fulfill all its duties correctly. It should: have fitting office conditions, be
well organized and well-managed, undertake its own research projects
in countries outside Europe, take care of experienced staff and train
new employees. It should be an institution that protects museum pie¬
ces properly, that exhibits collections to audience in a modern, true
and non-stereotypical way. Such institutions develop and shape their
collections programmatically, constantly searching for new educatio¬
nal and scientific solutions; in one word
-
they meet their didactic,
informative and academic tasks beneficently and evenly.
Examples (reported in discussions) of encountered problems and
difficulties in implementing the due activities indicate that such ideal
museum does not exist in Polish conditions. In each of the selected
museums, at least one of the aforementioned features is missing. The¬
refore, we can conclude that museologists dealing with non-European
ethnographic collections in Polish museums are facing quite
a challen-

Presented image of our museology does not look optimistic. Al¬
though, it involves many interesting initiatives, it should involve a lot
more. Sometimes, objective factors interfere, however we can often
blame poor organization or lack of an idea for a museum . Neverthe¬
less, we should keep in mind that non-European ethnology in Polish
conditions is an extremely specific, even a niche, discipline, based pri¬
marily on field studies and very different from many contemporary
trends in cultural anthropology. This very situation exerts relevant
impact on Polish ethnographic museums.
The author concludes with suggestions concerning the gradual
modernization of museum s work, and warning against revolutionary
actions that could cause destruction of previous accomplishments of
Polish ethnographic museums specializing in non-European cultures,
or that could end with a loss of what constitutes the autonomy of
these institutions. She stresses that the key to a good museum is a ba¬
lanced realization of all three groups of tasks imposed on it: collector s
endeavor, scientific research and education.
