The Problems of Russian Historiography in the Middle of the Nineteenth
—
Beginning of the Twenty First Century: Collected Articles of Young Re¬
searchers
(ed. A. S.
Usachev)
In this book young lecturers and postgraduates of the Russian State Univer¬
sity for the Humanities (Faculty of history, political science and law; department
of history and theory of historical science) deal with the significant problems
of Russian historiography in the middle of the nineteenth
—
beginning of the
twenty first century.
The authors of the articles raise some «eternal» historiographical issues: his¬
torian and society, historian and power, correlation of internal and external fac¬
tors in the development of historiography, the role of scientific discourse and
other discourses in the process of forming the picture of the past in the public
conscience. Researchers base on a lot of unpublished sources which contain
some unknown information. This allows us to gain more profound knowledge
about the development of Russian historiography.
The authors define the term «historiography» as widely as possible. As it be¬
came obvious in the last years, the content of this term has overstepped the insti¬
tutional limits of historical science and it now includes e.g. journalistic and other
discourses. Such meaning of historiographical subject-matter extends the resear¬
cher s opportunities in the studies of the historical views forming and existing
not only in the circle of professional historians but also among other social
groups. This idea is particularly important to analyze the initial stages of histori¬
cal research which has evolved from journalistic polemics to professional study.
E. A. Arkhipova in her article examines the initial stage of researching the
phenomenon of old believer s
entrepreneurship
in the middle of nineteenth
—
beginning of the twentieth century. Previously the state and the church authori¬
ties have mostly focused on the denunciation and restricting the rights of old be¬
lievers, but in this period the officials of Ministry of the Interior, political writers
and historians made an attempt to study this phenomenon of the Russian reality.
The article shows that the studies of old believers have gone a long way starting

with the official s attempts to find the reason for popularity of old believers
among the population and journalistic polemics about the role of old believers
in the socio-economic life of Russian Empire and ending with professional study
of this problem.
The work of P. A. Alipov is devoted to the biography of M. I. Rostovtzeff
(1870-1952),
the prominent Russian historian of antiquity of the twentieth cen¬
tury. The author questions the widespread opinion in historiography: namely,
that the revolution of
1917
has considerably influenced Rostovtzeff s concep¬
tion about the crisis of the Roman Empire. As P. A. Alipov shows, the main
assumptions of this conception were stated by M. I. Rostovtzeff at the turn
of nineteenth
—
twentieth centuries in the course of discussion about socio-eco¬
nomic history of ancient Rome. Basing on the results of this discussion
the author comes to a conclusion that particularly some internal factors played
a crucial role in the formation of Rostovtzeff s scientific views.
E. A. Dolgova concentrates on the problem of interaction between historian
and his surroundings which influence the economic, legal, everyday and other
sides of historian s life. She researches the biography of an eminent Russian his¬
torian
N.
I. Kareev
(1850-1931)
to find out how exactly the early soviet
socio¬
cultural
and political surroundings influenced the mature scholar from the «old»
school. As A. E. Dolgova shows, his age and research authority of
N.
I. Kareev
in the academic community granted him with a considerable independence
of community views. The historian scarcely adapted his research to the condi¬
tions of the new times. A result of that was a sharp restriction of opportunities
for professional activity. Only Kareev s death had prevented the authorities from
making one of the defendants in the so called «Academic case».
Here we especially focus on actual issues of the modern Russian historiog¬
raphy which are related to the processes relevant both to the scholarship and
Russian society in the whole.
The Soviet
1980s,
characterized by a decrease of ideological dictate, pro¬
voked some sharp historical disputes, some of which are still on. One of the key
issues was and still is the problem of
stalinism.
It reflected the whole range
of opinions on the events of immediate past and eventually the present. In her
article A. E. Cheltsova makes an attempt to find out how the historians and pub¬
licists defined the term
«stalinism»
during the period of
Perestroika
and in sub¬
sequent years. She also attempts to understand if the scholars have been able
to overcome the journalistic harshness in evaluation of the phenomenon and be¬
gin to study it. The result of this research gives us grounds to believe that the de¬
crease of sharp debates on
stalinism
in the modern Russian society is actually
creating conditions for some productive research of this phenomenon.
A. V. Uyasova deals with one of the central issues of modern Russian histo¬
riography, namely,

the adoption of foreign theoretical and methodological
practices on our grounds. The author focuses on the history of everyday life

which is now becoming more and more popular in modern Russian historiogra¬
phy. Its representatives rest mostly on the works of foreign (essentially, German)
researchers. In this article A. V. Ilyasova makes an attempt to understand how
the works of Russian historians proclaiming the adherence to this approach sat¬
isfy the theoretical and methodological assumptions of
Alltagsgeschichte.
The
article shows that not all the historians who proclaim themselves as belonging
to this historiographical direction actually do carry out its main principles in their
historical studies.
