Abstract
In the context of the second half of the seventeenth century we are able to say only
about forms resembling political parties whose emergence was largely facilitated by the
democratic system of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and clear polarisation of its
political scene. The division of the noble society that began shortly before King Michael
Wiśniowiecki
was elected to the Polish throne and deepened during his reign, translated
itself into the emergence of two opposing political camps: the court camp and anti-royal
camp. It is on the example of the first one that the model of seventeenth-century party is
reconstructed in the book. It was formed by the informal group of several tens of politicians
from the political elite, concentrated around the court, who either shared similar political
programme or only protected the king from the thread of dethronement.
In theory, the court party was headed by Michael
Wiśniowiecki
(in Polish, his full name
was:
Michał
Korybut
Wiśniowiecki)
who yet had no charisma sufficient to curb ambitions
of his supporters. For this reason the court was the stage of ongoing fights for the position
of actual leader. The balance between various influences was changing constantly: first,
the position of unquestionable leader was taken by Vice-Chancellor of the Crown
Andrzej
Olszowski, who in
1671
had to share his leadership with Grand Chancellor of Lithu¬
ania

the initiative was taken by the radicals who established
a confederation at the
Gołąb
village; in
1673
a relative equilibrium was restored between
all dignitaries of the state. It was difficult for the king
-
with the aid of divided counsel¬
lors
-
to grasp the whole of contemporary policy, to coordinate all actions and discipline
individual royalists, especially that he had no tools of pressure, apart from persuasion and
promises of royal grace. The task was the more difficult that as regards the style of action,
the royal camp was divided into two factions: moderate and radical one (the latter hold
views similar to the radical nobility), and each of them had the upper hand for a short time
only, depending on the political developments. Due to all this, the royal party was able
to operate in a considerably sufficient and functional way only in the periods of conflict
escalation and in the regions with strong royal communities; the party was able to make
fast decisions, engage numerous people and use various resources.
The pro-royal community was internally diversified and divided. It was the result both
of its complex genesis and division into numerous sub-groups, created by ambitious mag¬
nates, magnate factions, different programme fractions, noble defendants of their Golden
Freedom . The most influential, independent and opposite two groups were created by

the royalists gathered around the Lithuanian family of the Pacs and around Olszowski.
The group was also characterised by the strong position of middle nobility
-
some of the
individuals from its rank were able to gain an influential position at the court and coun¬
ter the influence of magnates. It should be emphasised, however, that the antagonism
between the nobles and magnates, clearly evident in the whole state, did not cause any
major conflicts in the pro-royal community, since it was in the opposite party that those
bad senators were looked for.
Although the pro-royal camp was not structured formally, it was composed of many
opposing groups, it did not have fixed or sufficient financial resources and had constant
communication problems, nevertheless it formed quite close political force. Its structure
translated into the network of mutual relations. A majority of royalists were associated
by the web of family, friendship, economic, factional or clientelism ties. Similar were the
relations among the royalists and malcontents. Thus, the cohesion of the royal camp was
determined by three main factors: the king, the threat from the opposition and political
programme which did not create a complex vision of the state policy and for this reason
differed in detail in the conceptions of various royalists but was the same in its general
outline that was to criticise the policy of the predecessor and dissociate from it.
The court party was sufficiently united to maintain the power and defeat the malcon¬
tents, yet, at the same time, it was short-lived, since it disintegrated soon after the uniting
elements disappeared. We are able to notice its gradual falling apart from mid-
1671,
after
its first failures in the implementation of its political programmes; the process was pushed
ahead by the compromise with the opposite party; the king s supporters hold together
only when he was alive. King Michael Wisniowiecki s party as a political force was too
unstable to outlive its official leader.
