ABSTRACT
The present
publication is doctoral thesis entitled: „Rehabilitating role of
the prison chaplain in Polish penitentiary system .
The main aim of this thesis and undertaken research is to show the reha¬
bilitating changes of imprisoned in connection with modelling dimensions of
personality which determine their moral improvement through the educational
role of the prison chaplain.
The subject of diagnosis in case of educational rehabilitation are mainly so¬
cial disturbances in functioning of individuals. The basic problem of rehabilitat¬
ing diagnostics is social maladjustment.
Rehabilitation as a type of educational process with psycho-corrective char¬
acter presents very difficult challenge, esspecialy when is directed to the adults
with fairly formed personality.
The aim of rehabilitation is „human transformation : erasing from the
consciousness a present contents and introducing new ones: total transforma¬
tion of their current image of world and oneself: reconstruction of personal¬
ity and change of identity of inmate, should be final goal of the prison chap¬
lain. Taking into consideration rehabilitation process of the spiritual sphere of
inmate, one cannot help noticing the educational role of the prison chaplain,
who plays a role of priest, psychotherapist and tutor. The fundamental influ¬
ence of the prison chaplain should have therapeutic character, what has been
widely presented in research.
The effective educational role of the prison chaplain mainly involves ap¬
plying the fundamental forms of priesthood activity in prisons and detention
centre, starting with congregational prayer, the Eucharist, and religious educa¬
tion and ending up on everyday conversation. Ability to helping people in cri¬
sis is particularly important confirmation of spiritual fatherhood of the prison
chaplain.
It is necessary to remember that „crime
-
similarly to many other human
behaviours -constitutes the result of inmate independent decision. It is clear
that the prison chaplain s offer and its quality depends not only on the type and
conditions of prison, but depends on the personality of the chaplain.

Abstract
The main, empirical part of this thesis shows the size of work which has
to be done by chaplain and the need of his involvement because the impris¬
oned person is very demanding, but not lost, very difficult but possible to be
saved „fixed . Certainly, not everyone, but it is worth trying. Penitentiary pasto¬
ral work in appropriate way shapes religious live of inmates and their internal
relationships within prison society. It is strengthening objectively checked val¬
ues, does not glorify evil and violence. More and more often the prison chaplain
seem to be the only person in conditions of the seclusion, who looks at inmate
not through the prism of fashionable ideologies, but in very realistic and com¬
prehensive way. Thanks to intensive contacts with inmates and every day expe¬
rience the chaplain assures them, that they are a valuable people.
The main task for the prison chaplain is to persuade- through meetings,
conversations and kindliness
-
if not all inmates, at least as many possible to
sacrament of the confession, sacrament of holy communion, etc. Indirectly, the
prison chaplain through the religious conversations which bring them closer to
God, determines their religious live and in the same time this is a rehabilita¬
tive component.
Preparing the subject of the thesis, author deliberated to find the answers
for four problematic questions:

What are the conditions of personality variables resulting from innate char¬
acteristics for moral improvement of inmates?
2.
What is the meaning of personality variables resulting from public rein¬
forcement for effectiveness of rehabilitation of inmates?
3.
What is the meaning of educational role of the prison chaplain regarding
moral improvement of inmates with family problems?
4.
Which factors of rehabilitation character of prison chaplains work influence
on moral improvement addicted inmates in penalty of imprisonment.

Among methods of hypothesis testing for the analysis author has chosen
test of significance Chi-square. In carried research the method of diagnostic
survey has been applied, using

questionnaires. Tabular analysis has been pre¬
sented by cross tables. In this thesis have been used controlled and uncon¬
trolled variables. For empirical analysis have been qualified

inmates, who
have been divided according to specific qualifying criteria.

As mentioned before, one of the function in activity of the prison chap¬
lain is educative function. Firstly, education consist of actions towards inmates
which aiming to form their morals and intellect, secondly education is form¬
ing personality in aim to develop directional instructions in inmates. The prison
chaplain aims to awaking the inmates to ability of inner experience of self -sat¬
isfaction because of actions for social good.
Forming the consciousness of inmates is exceptionally responsible task. Ed¬
ucational action of the prison chaplain is marked first of all by unanimity, and
his aim is to show inmates that in a real world superior value is the human, his
value and autonomy.
In rehabilitative actions associated with the moral improvement of the in¬
mates, role of the prison chaplain, a family and society are underlined. It seems
to be important to use the therapy which aims to prepare to cope in society out¬
side of the prison walls and to have ability to fully experience and understand
their own feelings, its place and role in life. This issues have a great meaning for
the legal and moral functioning in social life.
Leading to a positive changes in personal determinants of corrective poten¬
tial of inmates can be based on various foundations. Existing experiences show
that the most effective in process of rehabilitation of inmates are techniques
which are based on cognitive approach and social learning theory. Influenc¬
es using the output of cognitive therapy are based on assumption, that way of
perceiving oneself and surrounding reality and interpretation of life experienc¬
es affect their ability to
Live through the emotions and to take a certain behaviour. Because of that,
various rehabilitative programs should be directed at changing the view of the
world, mental stereotypes, negative attitude and preferred values and in conse¬
quence to this, to reduce dysfunctional behaviour. Approaches based on theo¬
ry of social learning establish that people have various abilities to adapt to sur¬
rounding world. Adaptation and developmental human changes are rooted in
social system, because of that learning of new behaviour is more effective when
is connected to the network of influence of others.
Carried research is a cross-sectional type and does not give direct informa¬
tion about transformation of inmates. It lets to establish the correlates of indi¬
vidual variables which describe the inmate behaviour and relation between their
moral improvement and educational role of the prison chaplain.
Condition of the correct survey is appropriate choice of representative sam¬
ple. The place where the mistake can occur is the moment of data selection.

Abstract
If this is not done in reliable way, it may lead to the distortion of research find¬
ings. The next limitation refers the choice of analysed data. In this situation
weaker sides of the research indicate possible directions in further research.
In the subject thesis has been carried significant analysis of family and so¬
cial conditionings preceding imprisonment, however further versatile analysis is
necessary, both surrounding society and family. In this matter detailed studies
are possible with analysis of various cases, what in consequence can give wider
picture of committed crimes and will allow in more appropriate way to direct
help towards inmate.
Growing crime in Poland and more and more sentenced people by valid
judgment indicate the need of preparation more effective preventive, thera¬
peutic, and educational projects with the participation of the prison chaplain.
Creating the new projects should be based from one side, on the latest research
results, on other side it should use the knowledge from the previous projects.
It seems to be justified to put the thesis forward, that actual efforts of the reha¬
bilitation process should be directed towards early prevention, which includes
young criminals and those sentenced only ones. It is very important, to look at
improvement of inmates through educational activity of the prison chaplain in
integral way, because rehabilitation has a lot of complex connections. It is nec¬
essary to emphasize the importance of unity of preventive, therapeutic and
educational efforts, because the inmates involved in moral improvement are
at high risk, in the reference of returning to the criminal activities. They need
further preventive, educational, therapeutic efforts. Preventive and therapeutic
programs should actively use the person of the prison chaplain, who signifi¬
cantly reduces risk of another participation of inmates in a new crimes. In this
project the prison chaplain should be present, who would not play only the con¬
fessors role or spiritual counsellor of inmates, but who could participate in ef¬
forts to improve (heal) social relations by introducing spiritual values, which
according to many respondents determine the lifestyle.
These programs should be based on the theoretical views related to known
psychological and sociological mechanisms. It is very relevant to add individual,
family and social elements. It is seems to be very important to implement these
programs regarding young criminals and places such as school.
In order to make a process of adaptation to the life outside the prison for the
inmates and their families much easier, it is necessary to give them post-peni¬
tentiary support and stimulate to maintain and create the relationship from the
beginning of imprisonment. The effective post-penitentiary support, according

means satisfying the financial needs which are part of
the process of adaptation in freedom; organizational and moral support, coun¬
selling, helping finding a job, accommodation, education and healthcare.
The role of the prison chaplain is of course much wider than presented in
this thesis, what is highlighted by the authors interested in this subject. Nev¬
ertheless, limiting the educational tasks introduced in this thesis is dictated by
credibility of undertaken research, which reflects actual intellectual and reli¬
gious state of inmates and their attitude towards educational role of the pris¬
on chaplain.
The Penitentiary rehabilitation of inmates is very difficult task, not only be¬
cause of the age of inmates and fully developed personality, but above all be¬
cause of the existence of the prison subculture, usually very negative towards all
values and set social norms. It is right to say that more effective is not invasive
rehabilitation method, which offers rehabilitated person very attractive, moti¬
vating activities with respect to the right to choose and subjectivity. It is impor¬
tant to recognize that imprisoned person is very sensitive to the instrumental
treatment. In connection with above, the role of all inmates participating in re¬
habilitation, including the prison chaplain is invaluable. Taking this opportuni¬
ty, it is significant to remember about constant searching for new and better so¬
lutions, programs, methods of rehabilitation.
The role of the prison chaplain, apart from preaching the word of God and
conducting of Holy sacraments, contains worship of spiritual comfort to the in¬
mates and also to their families. The aim of this worship is for inmates to re¬
alize, that on religious ground the forgiveness of sins comes from God, but in
real personal, family and social life inmate first of all has to forgive oneself and
then to ask for forgiveness to all those, who have been harmed and afterwards
satisfying all harms.
Usefulness of results, which have been obtained in carried research de¬
pends on possibility of its practical usage in one of the aspect, that is shaping
of personality dimensions which determines the moral improvement of inmates
through educational activity of the prison chaplain.
Novelty of subject thesis presents specifying, systematizing and researching
of process of rehabilitation in which the prison chaplain serves a role of tutor.
What is more, novelty is the methodology and own manner of carried research.
For raising the credibility of research results, most of them have been compared
with results of experts in this field.

convince of effects, which are obtained in rehabilitation of
inmates and also about goal of educational role of the prison chaplain. Above
all, this goal means prevention of pathologic behaviour which is completing
through various forms of educational influence. The thesis includes the theo¬
retical description of problem which author has been analysing for more than
10
years and who is the prison chaplain in one of the Warsaw detention centre.
