theatre of the
1990s
witnessed an explosion of
new talent and presented a new sensibility that sent
Shockwaves through audiences and critics. In this
major reassessment of playwriting from the period
Aleks Sierz revisits the decade to examine the origins,
significance and legacy of the work created.
Beginning with a panoramic survey of life in the
1990s
and a detailed study of the theatre produced, the work
of four of the major playwrights who left an indelible
mark on the theatre landscape is then examined by
different scholars: Philip Ridley (by Aleks Sierz), Sarah
Kane (Catherine
Rees),
Anthony Neilson (Trish Reid),
and Mark Ravenhill (Graham Saunders). A series of
further documents including essays and interviews
with the playwrights, together with a consideration of
work and revivals produced in subsequent years, grant
greater insight into each writer s body of work and its
place in the narrative of modern British theatre.
