SUMMARY
This work deals with the development of a tradition of musical culture in
Trnava
and in this wider context presents the life and work of
Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský
the town's most notable personality in the field of music. It is devoted to the musical
history of the town from the later Middle Ages and Renaissance, and presents informa¬
tion regarding important stages of the development of education in the 17th and 18th
century
(Trnava
University), music in the environment of churches and religious or¬
ders, musical social activitity, music in the gymnasium (19th century) and the influence
of choirs and orchestral associations in the 20th century up to the end of the
1950s
and
Schneider-Trnavský's
death.
The purport of the work is an overall review of the personality and work of the
composer
Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský
(1881-1958)
in the context of the socio-political
changes that took place in the course of the first half of the 20th century. Connected with
these changes are the inspirations that influenced his work. A detailed analytical view of
the composer's music is supplemented with information from secondary sources that
frequently portrays the circumstances of the origins of his
compostions.
The work also
contains a brief reflection of his musico-theoretical, literary and artistic work.
Apart from his secular music, most attention is given to his hitherto little-known
religious compositions with Latin texts and the problematical hymns. The work draws
attention to the influences and inspirations connected to
Mikuláš Schneider-Trnav¬
ský's
work and stylistic orientation, and how the composer fits into the context of the
development of Slovak music.
Schneider-Trnavský's
large body of work is made up of
many genres, forms and styles. Some of the results of the creative process, frequently
spurred by external circumstances, have the attributes of functional music, partially in¬
fluencing the choice of the means of expression. Works from the time of the composer's
maturity
(1933
onwards) have a greater degree of autonomy and there is a reflection in
this of the tendency to avoid the bonds of tonal thinking. However, these works are
rare and others are marked by a return to a classical-romantic starting point. Through
the selection of musical means of expression exploiting chromaticism, alteration and
enharmonies,
the composer and his works stood at the boundary between neoroman-
ticism and impressionism. The uniqueness of
Schneider-Trnavský's
spontaneous work
is rooted in melodiousness, inventive counterpoint and above all in the ability to find
untraditional harmonic relationships. The creation of new harmonic structures, con¬
nections and phrases and an openness to the chordal principles of artless music are the
most characteristic features of his entire compositional output. A large part of his work
was created with the direct influence of folk song. In his predominantly vocal-instru¬
mental compositions he applied the principles of programme music, emphasizing the
semantic capacity of the musical thought. If he ranged in his instrumental composi¬
tions, he almost always strove for intelligibility, whether verbal or through conventional
symbolism. In his religious works the programme is not subject to changes in fashion,
hence their timelessness. Directly through the influence of a process of change and
development in character, and thereby also a loss of meaning in the affected con¬
tent, many of his secular works lack this timelessness, perhaps with the exception of his
songs, many of which completely assume the function of this attribute.
