Local names in the region of Harmanli

The present monograph is dedicated to the study of local names in the region of
Harmanli. The choice of the former Harmanli district has been influenced by the
circumstance that this is a very poorly studied region as far as toponymy goes and by
the complicated linguistic and demographic processes observed in the region. The
study is based on an extensive
toponymie
corpus for the setting-up of which archive
sources have been used, along with published and unpublished written works, maps
and a very detailed
toponymie
survey in every settlement. The basic task of the
study is to present the fullest possible picture of the
toponymie
system of the region.

accomplish this task it is necessary that an analysis of the phonetic features of the
toponyms should be made, their origin and meaning should be defined, the principles
of formation of toponyms be determined on the basis ofsemantic and morphological
markers and the specification of basic
toponymie
types should be made determining
as precisely as possible the period during which these types appeared. This approach
makes it possible to reconstruct the basic stages in the development of the
toponymie
system in the region of Harmanli and to reveal older cultural and ethnic relations
among the settlements in this region.
Chapter one presents all uncovered data concerning the history of the region.
The written historic sources are scarce, but archeological findings testify to a rather
vigorous or at least continuous life in the settlements for decades of centuries. Local
legends and stories related to the settlements or to certain toponyms are retold here.
All collected materials about every settlement concerning the history, demography,
livelihood, cultural development, the lineal names of larger families and the toponyms
in the lands pertaining to the settlement are presented. The stratification of toponyms
regarding chronological and historic development in the traditionally pertaining area
of the settlement and respectively in the cultural and linguistic group of people offers
the possibility to determine the period of active formation and usage of toponyms and
their social significance. The registered family names contribute to the defining of
the etymology of a large number of toponyms and supply information on the traditional
anthroponymic system.
The second chapter of the study is Linguistic characteristics of local names .
Generally speaking, local names reflect characteristic features of the dialect in the

ex-district of Harmanli which belongs to the group of North-Thracian dialects. The
observed linguistic characteristics on
toponymie
level coincide generally with the
typical of the dialects in the region of Harmanli at the present stage of their
development lexicalization of many phonetic and grammatical features connected to
interdialectal
influences and to the larger and stronger impact of the official Bulgarian
language. This also leads to a change in the linguistic aspect of local names. An
informer quite often pronounces the same name in various ways during the process
of answering the questions from the
toponymie
survey. The phonetic characteristics
of local names reveals the main features of the dialect connected to the historic
development of the Bulgarian language, but oriented to the local linguistic phenomena.
The morphological features and the structure of local names have been studied in
detail. In the section on vocabulary features of local names the ancient and modern
features of names are analysed along with the studied linguistic and cultural layers.
The third chapter is dedicated to the semantic classification of local names which
are divided into two main groups: local names related to natural conditions and local
names related to human activities. In each of these two groups local names are
classified very meticulously in subgroups according to the meaning of the appellatives
used in the process of formation of toponyms.
Chapter four contains general conclusive comments on the results of the research
which define the
toponymie
system of the region of Harmanli as part of the entire
Bulgarian
toponymie
system.
The fifth chapter Glossary of local names contains all registered by the
researcher local names in the region of Harmanli arranged in alphabetical order,
followed by the mention of the settlement to whose area the objects belong, by
approximate spatial location, a brief description of the object and tracing the etymology
of the name to the initial appellative from which it was formed.
