The Light of the Kingdom of Creation
RESUME
Lithuanian cultural worker Vaidotas Daunys (1958-1995) distinguished
himself by his diverse talent: as a literary critic, editor, journalist, publisher
and poet. He was diligent and creative. Daunys died tragically at the age of
thirty-seven. Posthumously four of his books were published - an essay
book, two poetry books, and the fourth book of literary criticism; isolated
poems and articles as well. He was awarded the Gabriele Petkevicaite-Bite
Prize, also various art pieces were dedicated to him. That proves an unfading
society’s interest in the body of work of this active personality.
Vaidotas Daunys was born in 1958 in Panevezys (registered in
Rokiskis). He started to create in the early childhood. When he was nine
years old, his poems were already published in the press of Republic of
Lithuania. Later on, during his Lithuanian language and literature studies
at the University of Vilnius, he distinguished himself by his analytical
abilities. Therefore, as the fifth year student, he was accepted to work
for the magazine Metai (Years) (at that time called Pergale (Victory)),
at the Department of Literature Science and Criticism. Since then, he
285
joined Lithuanian literature not only with his new poems, but also with
book reviews, surveys and scientific articles (was in the research stage for
his doctorate work concerning Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas). In 1985, he
published his poetry book Mety laikai (Seasons). For several years he was
the leader of the Young Writer s Union in Vilnius, prepared the almanac
Veidai (Faces). (Within the period of 1985-1989, he edited 5 volumes). In
the almanac, the writer aimed to consolidate forces of young creators
of various specialities, cherish traditions of intellectual communication
and conceptuality of creation. Using this media, Daunys linked together
young poets, writers, artists, musicians, philosophers and critics. During
Soviet times, appearance of this publication was a real sensation, thanks
to which, Daunys became the leader of his generation. In 1987, he left
Pergale and started to edit a magazine for schoolchildren,
(Little Star). In the Post-Soviet period, with the dawn of independence
of Lithuania, Daunys edited two Lithuanian cultural magazines: Krantai
(Shores), which he founded in 1989, and Naujoji Romuva (New
in the case of the latter, in 1994 resurrecting the celebrated intellectual
oriented pre-war magazine.
Krantai is an art and culture magazine dedicated to art interpretation
and promotion of culture in general. The magazine, integrating various
creative activities and representing the Unions of Lithuanian Artists,
Composers, Photographers and Theatre Creators, immediately became a
striking, extraordinary phenomenon of the renascent Lithuanian culture.
However, it was not easy to finance the monthly publication, as one-third
of the magazine consisted of illustrative material. The State supported
the magazine only partially. The Editor had to search for additional
financing sources: engage in commercial activity or collect subsidies. For
that reason, in 1991 was established the Regnum fund. For teeming with
ideas Vaidotas, that was an additional impulse for developing cultural
286
activities. He conceived and started successful implementation of joint
publishing, poetical and musical Regnum project: created a publishing
house of the same title, periodical almanac and an ensemble of chamber
music (the leader - Arunas Statkus). The meaning of the project is coded
in the Latin title Regnum (eng. Kingdom). It means the principle of
creation itself, or otherwise - the Kingdom unfolding in a creation. The
Kingdom is alive, nourished by the individual experience of a creator.
Thus, the particularity of books published by Regnum fund consisted
of so-called intimate genre literature - lyrics, dairies, notes, essays, etc.
They were published using the means of private people. Origins, essence
of creativity, the everlasting meaning of classics were discussed in two
Regnum almanacs published within 1991-1992. The favoured attitude
was the emphasis on creative criterion based on tradition. The main
emphasis - that not the past, but the present is important, the continuity
of tradition nowadays. Having published the second Regnum issue, in
one of the articles, Vaidotas Daunys indicated its following themes 1)
Relations between an object and a symbol - reflections on poetic language;
2) Problem of finality and eternity; 3) A book and its subsistence. He
suggested that the almanac is a book in a book, as besides smaller pieces,
a book or its part is being published in it. During events, organised by
Vaidotas in various Lithuanian towns, the public listened to music, poems,
discussed works of Bach, Mandelstam, Karsavin, Dante and others. These
works maintain their actuality; they can function as an artistic criterion,
offsetting post-modern inanity. During these events, new books and
periodicals were also presented. The annual almanac Regnum, quarterly
magazine Krantai and monthly magazine Naujoji Romuva belonged to
the latter. All publications, edited by Daunys (magazines Krantai, Naujoji
Romuva and almanac Regnum), were constituent parts of the Regnum
fund. In one of the interviews, Vaidotas mentioned that Regnum was the
287
brainchild of his entire life. Therefore, having published another volume,
he felt as if he published his own book. He also rejoiced over the success
of the book of Regnums little library; which is proven by the records
found in his diary.
He spared neither efforts, nor property for this work (he invested a part
of the money received for selling his apartment in Vilnius; one colleague
persuaded him to mortgage his unfinished house and invest the received
funds into a company that bankrupted soon after). He continued his
search for sponsors and creditors. Even if he avoided politics, he started
to write weekly reviews for the newspaper Lietuvos rytas. Finally, it all
lead to aeronautics - cooperation with a strong company promised
financial perspectives. Having flown several times with a Pepsi LY-OBY
air balloon, he could have become a member of the team. However,
he died on July 29, 1995, on the eve of the Fifth Worldwide Lithuanian
Games, at the celebration in Vingio Park (Vilnius). It happened due to
the technical failure, when, just before the start, unexpectedly, the air
balloon got off the ground and flew up at high speed, tearing up the
basket holding people as well. Some of the passengers managed to jump
off the balloon, but not Daunys. He was raised to the height of 250 or
400 meters, and fell down from that height. Later on, it became clear
why in the beginning of the flight he did not unhook as others did. After
his death, it was noticed that there was an extensive bruise around the
wrist of his right hand. It was concluded that Vaidotas was entangled
in the string that held him tight to the balloon. This tragedy was widely
announced in Lithuanian and foreign mass media, however, the fact was
not proven legally.
Wishing to better understand his creative work, it is necessary to
study in depth the personality and world-view of the creator. Relatives,
close friends and colleagues, familiar with Vaidotas Daunys, narrated:
288
Roma Brogiene, Head of the Department of Criticism at
magazine, for which Daunys worked, recalled: “He was focussed; he knew
perfectly well what he wanted. He knew how to laugh; he was a warm and
normal person. He was talented - he was equally strong as a poet, essayist
and scientist. Many authors considered it an honour that he reviewed
their books, since he viewed them from an interesting, non-superficial
perspective. Vaidotas wished to edit his own magazine; therefore, he left
Pergale and started to work in Zvaigzdut The latter magazine changed
significantly, as more material about writers, their heritage, etc. appeared
in it. Another important factor - he freely professed Catholicism. He
tried to create cultural life by joining people together. He seriously
prepared for his organised cultural evenings. These events were highly
intellectual. There is nothing like that anymore. Only Daunys was able to
organise them. He also had a gift for that.”
His colleague at Pergale magazine and friend Valdas Kukulas: “Vaidas
was highly educated. An intellectual. He was very honest, as much as it is
possible in this society. A tolerant person.”
Rimantas Skeivys, Daunys’s assistant at Krantai magazine: “He was
free from preconceived attitudes and superstitions; he acted according
to his own world-view and individual opinion. He tried to cover as
much ground as possible - he worked in all directions. A Christian. With
the start of the regeneration period in Lithuania, it was necessary to
understand Christianity and reintroduce it again into the culture. In this
view, Daunys was the most outstanding personality.”
Nijole Kvaraciejute, executive secretary of Krantai, Naujoji Romuva
and other Regnum fund publications: “Vaidotas was an authority for a lot
of people in Lithuanian cultural sphere. He was exceptionally attentive
and regardful in relation to his written words, even to a syllable, a
sound of that syllable. I remember, after the revival of Naujoji Romuva,
289
after becoming the Editor-in-Chief, he started to create an artistic and
ideological image of the magazine with extreme responsibility. He was
unselfish and non-revengeful.”
Arvydas Juozaitis, founder of Naujoji Romuva, participant of the
events organised by the Regnum fund: “Daunys was introverted. He
felt his duty to the society strongly. His publishing and organisational
aspirations were immense. In order to shake up the society he organized
concerts like nobody else. He was never rowdy; everything he made was
in halftones. He emphasized the forms of canonical culture: Dante, Bach
and Mandelstam.”
Arvydas Sliogeris, participant of the events organised by the Regnum fund:
“Vaidotas noticed things that others would not notice (in nature,
people and events). His character was of a tough Samogitian type. An
expansive personality. He tried to accomplish many things, did not
limit himself to poetry or other type of writing. He worked to publicize
culture.”
Robertas Petrauskas, a fellow student, after the death of Vaidotas
Daunys became the Publishing Director of the Regnum fund: “What
I always remember is a peaceful, gentle and silent soul. Reserved,
thoughtful. He had a Christian attitude - not to be the first one on the top
or pampered. However, he stood up for the ideas - he wanted others to
hear them. He lacked the people who could line these ideas up, confirm
them. It’s impossible to do the same thing at present.”
His widow Raimonda: “Vaidotas was a subtle person; he avoided
wrong actions, even thoughts. He thought that evil could become real.
Christ was his ideal.”
In autumn of 1999, during the presentation of the collection of poems
Kelio zenklai ( Road Signs) by Vaidotas Daunys in Vilnius Writers’ Club,
Monsignor Kazimieras Vasiliauskas spoke that such a personality as
290
Vaidotas Daunys is born once in a century. Later on, when asked why he
described the writer this way, Monsignor replied: “because of this young
mans talent and exceptional commitment to high ideals”.
Therefore, it all demonstrates that Daunys was of a humble and
peaceful character, aiming for the unity of thoughts, words and actions
via persistent work. His versatile talent was inherited from his parents:
mother - Joana Dauniene, the Lithuanian philologist, honorary member
of the Vydunas Association, who wrote in one of her poems: “the inner
world of a person is a temple of the nation; the nation is beautified by its
inner blossoms”... In addition, father - Stasys Daunys, the victim of Soviet
repressions, who now is a famous ethnographer and a distinctive poet.
Respect for books Vaidotas inherited from his parents. He considered a
book as an expression of true and high culture. At home, he amassed an
enormous Lithuanian language library. A part of it contains autographs
of our famous writers’; other books are inscribed by Vaidotas’s hand. He
had a peculiar habit: having bought a book, he made a note with the
date of its purchase, even the place where it was bought (e.g. Versmes,
Minties bookstore; if it was a present - who presented the book as a gift,
and when it was presented). Apparently, he considered the fact and
circumstances of a book acquisition to be important. During his visits
abroad, the expatriates presented him with a wide variety of publications
as well. Vaidotas also delved deep into philosophy. He read works of
Vladimir Solovjov, Antanas Maceina, Stasys Salkauskas, Juozas Girnius,
Teilhard de Chardin, and Merabo Memardashvili. Evidently, some of
these thinkers’ ideas were transformed in him.
The idea of this book emerged taking into consideration activity
of Vaidotas Daunys as a cherisher of Lithuanian culture during the
Independence period. In this work, we are publishing a collection of
his articles and essays dealing with the themes of Lithuanian culture,
291
formerly scattered in various publications. While in depth analyzing the
culture concept of Vaidotas Daunys, its components are discussed. It is a
relevant topic, since it has been poorly researched, even though a lot has
been written already about his poetry and essays. It is not easy to unveil
the culture perception of Vaidotas Daunys, as Vaidotas did not leave
comprehensive descriptions - he disliked long texts. His writing style is
characterized by brevity, imagery, and an aim to convey the essence of
the described phenomenon using several felicitous words. Everything he
wrote is distinguished by a philosophical notion. Symbols are frequent
in his texts on culture.
Dr. Elvyra Usaciovaite, the compiler of the book and the author of
its introduction, is a known expert of the ancient religion of Balts and
of Lithuanian culture. She was awarded the Humanitarian Sciences’
Doctor’s degree based on her work examining symbolism of Lithuanian
folk art, compiled a number of article collections concerning the archaic
culture of Balts and its traditional symbols. The introduction of this
book presents the analysis of symbols used by Vaidotas Daunys which
reveal his culture concept.
Both lyrical and analytical texts, also essays by Vaidotas Daunys
(written in the period of 1988-1995) are published in the first chapter
of the book, Being and creation. Relationship of the creating individual
to moral values, historical period, intellectual freedom and religious
beliefs are described in the chapter. These are deep, original thoughts
of the author, poet and philosopher, expressed by symbols distinctive
of Daunys’ poetry. In addition, here we can find an article dedicated to
poetics: genesis of creation and components of the creative process are
described as well.
A group of articles, published in the second chapter of the book,
Landscapes, offers Daunys’ glance at localities of our and foreign countries
292
from the cultural standpoint. A lot of attention is paid to the capital of
Lithuania, Vilnius, which he called the symbol of faith. Philosophical,
aesthetical and theological attitudes intertwine in the symbol of Vilnius.
Symbols, transferred from other works by Daunys, are connected to form
completeness: Kingdom, stone, shores, sacrificial chalice, light, movement
(e.g. walking, swimming). For example, the symbol of Kingdom is taken
from religion. That is the title of God characterising His (as the Kings)
power in the world. As we know, the idea of the Kingdom was explicated
by St. Augustine, who created the concept of the Society of God - the City
of God. According to the concept, the reality is made out of two societies,
two cities ( civitasDei and civitas terrena). They differ in faith, hope and
love. The City of God originates from faith in resurrected Christ. This
City is travelling, i.e. as if on a journey, consuming various goods in order
not to lose the main objective - eternity. As long as it is travelling, despite
various languages, traditions and laws, it invites people to gather in a
community. Meanwhile, an earthy city concerns itself with only tangible
benefits, searches for earthy happiness and creation of temporary idols.
These cities (started from the Biblical times of Abel and Cain) continue
within the entire history of humanity; they live in a medley until they are
separated at the end of the world. Apart from religious, the symbol of
the Kingdom in Daunys’ work has another meaning - creative. Vilnius
is a principle of creation inspiring its residents. Daunys had the opinion
that each generation, upon inheriting Vilnius, should create it from
the beginning. It does not mean destruction; on the contrary, it means
renewal and recreation of the essential values that were decimated.
Apart from Vilnius, the second chapter of the book is describing
Panevezys and its surroundings: the Nevezis River, giria (homeland
of Vaidotas Daunys and his mother), the authors trip to Zaliojigiria(7he
Green Forest), conveying his space and time experiences. To this core
2 9 3
other texts of the chapter ( Sodas( by Nevezis),
Pazaislis) and articles concerning important - from the existential point
of view - localities of Daunys’ favourite authors, prohibited in the Soviet
times (e.g. poet and diplomat Oskaras Milasius who lived in France and
philosopher Antanas Maceina who lived in Germany), relate thematically.
Daunys’ stay in the USA in 1989, his acquaintance with the culture and
representatives of the Lithuanian Diaspora is described here as well.
Articles concerning creators and their characteristic body of work are
collected in the third chapter of the book ( by
Creativity). These are reflections on Lithuanian artists Algirdas Petrulis,
Vincas Kisarauskas, philosopher Juozas Girnius, theatre director Juozas
Miltinis and writer Antanas Vaiciulaitis. It also touches upon the
philosopher of Russian origin Lev Karsavin. The text about Lev Karsavin
(published in the daily newspaper Lietuvos rytas) served as an invitation
to Sonnet and Music Night, organised by Daunys’ Regnum fund, in
memoriam of Lev Karsavin, on 11 December 1992, in Vilnius. Two texts
relating to St. Francis of Assisi, whose importance to the European culture
(including Lithuanian culture) is invaluable, are included in this chapter.
The importance of texts of St. Francis of Assisi is tremendous. Apart from
that, Daunys’ translation from Italian to Lithuanian of the famous prayer
of St. Francis of Assisi Song of Creation is published here.
The fourth chapter of the book contains texts related to the Regnum
cultural fund, established by Daunys. They reveal author’s attitude to the
particulars of journalistic work, high objectives and requirements raised
by Daunys as the executive of the Regnum fund; and Editor-in-Chief of
cultural publications Krantai, Naujoji Romuva, Regnum. For instance, it
is apparent, based on the introductory article for the Lithuanian press,
on publishing of the second issue of “Regnum”; from his interviews
given to Rimvydas Valatka, Gediminas Butkus, Alis Balbierius. Also, his
294
objectives may be understood from the editorial by Vaidotas Daunys in
the first issue of Krantai and the article On actual “now” (
Romuva), in which he discussed the necessity for Lithuania to cherish
the cultural identity and criteria, taking into consideration reconciliation
of tradition and modernity.
At the end of the book, there are two appendixes: a detailed
bibliography of Vaidotas Daunys (1967-2006) and an index of names.
Vaidotas Daunys’s cultural heritage consists of various literary genres:
poems, prose, translations, articles on literature, reviews, interviews,
essays, accompanying notes for magazines, books, poems; presentations
of events and books. Apart from that, Daunys put a lot of energy not only
into writing, but also into the work of a publisher, editor and organizer
of creative activities. Volumes of almanacs, sets of magazines, published
books written by other authors belong to his oeuvre. However, the
bibliography of Vaidotas Daunys is not limited to that; it also includes
literature about Daunys before and after his death: articles by other
people, books by Daunys, published after his death, their reviews,
interpretations of his body of work, memoirs, letters, poetry, music and
art work dedicated to Vaidotas Daunys.
