CONCLUSION
During the first half of the 20th century, a village woman in
Serbia lived in two types of family units: a disappearing family clan
and an appearing individual family. In both of these families the
woman had, along with her significant agricultural role, a number
of other duties which she managed on her own. Mainly, illiterate
and unenlightened, she bore children and raised them, maintained
hygiene within the home, prepared food, made clothes and gar¬
ments, worked in the garden and the field, nursed the old and the
sick, bought and sold produce at the market, fulfilled her spousal
obligations and such.
In a patriarchal structure, the woman had spent less time in the
field, at less physically demanding work, having more time and en¬
ergy for her home duties. With the disappearance of rural family
units, to which she herself had contributed above all by keeping
property, on the one hand her position had become less favorable
as she now spent more time in the field, along with all her other
duties. On the other hand, she also profited from the division of the
extended family. In certain domains she gained complete control,
the child rearing and raising were now entirely her responsibilities
within which she was free to express her motherly love, while hav¬
ing more impact on other matters due to the possibility of confer¬
ring with her husband.
With the transformation of the rural family the „slavish" sub¬
ordination of the woman to the man was disappearing, although he

remained her „master" who sometimes guarded that right by force. It
was with difficulty that the woman came out
ofthat
shadow, that she
could shirk that domination, even though it was her, not him, who
was the backbone of the home.

The measures taken in the modernization of the socialist state
and the transformations that occurred within the family in the after¬
math of the war did not only affect a woman's place within it but
also her life. Equality under the law for men and women, higher ed¬
ucation leading to increases in financial independence for women,
based on the fact that the percentage of women employed was much
higher than previously, affected women's status significantly. The
nuclear family, divorce liberalization, the inability to control birth
rate, also affected a woman's position within socialism. Yet it was
not sufficient to fully overcome the traditional way of thinking
about the essence and social status of women, to prevail over the
deep-seated values of the roles of men and women within the fami¬
ly. Women continued to do the brunt of the work in the household,
and with the children, even when they were employed. Despite all
the changes that took place in the post war years, they could not an¬
nul the visible differences which existed, in the years between the
wars, between women in rural and those in urban areas. The system
of norms and behaviors particular to the patriarchal ideology had a
greater influence in rural areas then in towns and cities. Many indi¬
cators testify to the fact that the process of modernization of the ru¬
ral family and changes in that direction are not unambiguous, nor
have they fully overcome the patriarchal order. With the distinct dif¬
ference in the way of life for women in urban and rural surround¬
ings, within different family units, with the echoes of emancipation
on one side and the strong presence of tradition on the other, and all
the changes during the socialist modernization, the inferiority of

women was especially retained within the traditional roles of the
family. The extension of the life span in the twentieth century, espe¬
cially during its latter half, is one of the factors that have affected
the family and its unit the most. Along with a longer life span, a de¬
crease in birth and fertility rate, have also had an impact.
Although alternative forms of living were evermore present, a
marital union was still most often to be found. The most common in¬
stitution in Serbia was still marriage. With time divorce was com¬
pletely liberalized and the separation of families was all the more
common. In the entire post war period children would most often be
placed with the mother, which was a noticeable change with respect
to legislation and practice in
pre
war Serbia. However, many women
and children from divorced unions were subject to numerous diffi¬
culties and discriminations, even when the law provided otherwise.
Avoiding alimony was common practice. It was not uncommon, that
the parent who lost custody would drift away and lose interest in the
child. According to statistics the number of divorces in comparison
to marriages has oscillated. In the 1990's there were fewer divorces.
Some of the reasons that brought about a decrease in divorce were
the plight and poverty of a large part of the population, the existen¬
tial crisis as well as the increased psychological connection charac¬
teristic for a family during such a time. Marital partners without chil¬
dren were often among those who divorced. In the last couple of
decades couples would marry then divorce later in life, while in their
mature years. Causes for divorce were marital infidelity, alcoholism,
aggression or violence. For this particular region, conflicts with in-
laws are one of the common causes of divorce. Divorce is certainly
one of the most stressful events in a life, right after death of a close
family member or the loss of a loved one. The psychological conse¬
quences and adverse effects affect not only the former partners but
their parents and are especially traumatic for the children.
After the break-up of marital units, there came about a restruc¬
turing of the family and the creation of new, different types of family

units. Sometimes the parent, most often the mothers, made the deci¬
sion to continue living alone with their children. Families which
constitute one parent and childe or children are single-parent fami¬
lies. The forming of these families was usually preceded by divorce
or children born out of wedlock. The terminology associated with
these family units which identified them changed over time, but it
almost always, until the 1970's when the term was coined, had a
negative connotation, linking them to social risks. Legal standing of
children born in wedlock and outside it, relations between parents
and children, the procedure for determining paternity and such, was
subject to regulation by law since the time of the early socialist state.
Quantitative indicators testify to an increase in the number of these
families especially in the latter part of the 20th century. Social prac¬
tice and attitude towards single-parent homes in every-day life de¬
pended on the manner in which they were formed. A number of fac¬
tors contradicted the promoted ideology of equality at birth and
reflected deep seated social norms.
The daily life of working women, wives and mothers brought
to the forefront their conflicting roles and problems of their harmo¬
nization. The overburdening of women in the post war period was
customary. The time a woman spent on household chores and ev¬
ery-day activities in the home was no less than the time dedicated to
her profession. The burdening of women on all fronts was charac¬
teristic of their lives and their status within socialism. Aid to fami¬
lies, primarily to the woman, not only with respect to her traditional
responsibilities within the home but also the sustained, habitual,
rigid role divisions between sexes, was primarily intended for work¬
ing women. One of the strongholds for the disparaging position of
women that came out as a result of unequal, differing roles within
the family did not crumble during socialism due to a different divi¬
sion of labor within it but with help that came from outside it, from
society. Different types of assistance to the family, social aid, dis¬
creet improvement towards the socialization of household chores,

that is the transference of part of the every-day house work on so¬
cial services and public institutions, were all attempts at overcom¬
ing the paradoxical role of the woman and the creation of conditions
for her higher social and other engagements.
As one of the main problems in families, contemporary society
and legislature recognize family violence. Whether it is manifested
as physical violence or it takes other forms, its victims are most of¬
ten women and children. Traditional modes of behavior, learnt pat¬
terns of communication between men and women, as well as the
views held on child rearing, which do not frown upon the use of
physical force as punishment for disobedience, are fertile ground
for the appearance of violence in the home. Research with respect
to violence in the family in Serbia, illustrate that society is not im¬
mune to this type of abuse of women and children, to the contrary.
