Slovak Post-war Exile and its Activities
1945 -1970
Myth and Reality
The book focuses on the problem of creation and activities of the Slovak
post-war exile related to the Slovak Republic and its regime in broader context
of internal and foreign affairs from
1945
till the end of
19608.
It deals with
activities of young generation in the Hinka's Slovak People's Party
(ľudáci)
after the outbreak of the Uprising, activities of the special units of the Hlinka's
Youth headquarters
-
especially of its information section
-
against the Upris-
mg and demonstrations of Czecho-Slovak unity during the final period of the
World War II. Their steps were influenced by regime crisis and their transition
to the role of political exile at the end and after the war. To fulfill their goals,
the exile headquarters and especially the Slovak Action Committee abroad
tied to take advantage from the growing disagreements among the former Al¬
lies of the anti-Nazi coalition which culminated in the outbreak of the Cold
War. Slovak exile believed that the new global conflict will become the crucial
condition for the realization of its subversive plans. Its activities and simi¬
larly the activities of domestic illegal movement, which represents another
^portant
area of the research, were limited to relatively small number of
Slovak population. It is an absolute nonsense to describe it as a "mass move¬
ment" with a goal to destroy the Czechoslovak Republic. The book deals with
the relatively unknown facts about the activities of exile headquarters, about

"Barcelona" transmitter, cooperation between the former
"ľudáci"
and the
Western intelligence agencies on the occupied Austrian territory, about the ac¬
uities of Czechoslovak delegate in the London United Nations War Crimes
Commission, activities of domestic illegal movement and other topics which
Wl11 be acknowledged by experts researching the post-war period.
The publication describes the actual positions of
"ľudáci"
exile groups and
domestic illegal movement. It also deals with their actual influence on Slovak
society and its misusage by the communist regime which described it as a
Proof of subversive conspiracy and used their activities as a tool to weaken
he P°sition of Democratic Party

As a result, dramatic lawsuits took place in Slovakia during
1947.
They fore¬
shadowed the danger for democracy in the post-war Czechoslovak Republic
and became the prologue to the events which happened several months later
in February
1948
when the communists established their monopolistic power
in Czechoslovakia.
After the Czechoslovak Coup in February
1948
and the establishment of
communist regime new factor different from the existing differences between
the
"ľudáci"
exile groups emerged
-
differences between already existing
Czech and Slovak exile groups on one hand and the new post-February politi¬
cal exile on the other. Relationships between Slovak post-war exile members
and the representatives of the "new post-February" wave had been irrecon¬
cilable right from the beginning. Thanks to its past and its political program
it was impossible for the Slovak post-war exile to find "common ground"
with the post-February exile standing on the position of Czechoslovak state.
Members of the post-February exile were labeled as "Czechoslovakists" and
"quislings" by the Slovak post-war exile which strongly dissociated form their
activities. Despite its diversity and differences in their views on the solution of
the Slovak question, the Slovak post-war exile was becoming deeply isolated.
Substantial attention is given to the exile groups represented by Ferdinand
Ďurčanský
and
Karol
Sidor.
The book deals with their programs, failed at¬
tempts to unite their lines in
1950s
as well as in the
1960s
including the analy¬
sis of this failure. The first group was represented by
Durčanský's
Slovak Ac¬
tion Committee in Argentina that tried to put itself to the position of the only
"leader" of the Slovak exile. In order to achieve those goals the organization
was reorganized and renamed to Slovak Liberating Committee. It
intensifie
its propagandist activities, too. The book describes also activities of
Karo
Sidor
who came out from a shadow after the communist coup in Czecho¬
slovakia and had decided to reorganize Slovak National Council in London.
This organization was established during the World War II by Peter
Prídavok.
The book describes also other organizational steps which were made in or¬
der to establish a new exile headquarters. Sidor's closest collaborator Joze^
Kirschbaum
played an important role in this operation. The publication give
concrete examples to illustrate the fact that the Slovak exile related to
Slovak Republic
1939 - 1945
and its regime did not find and because oti
past activities and political program naturally also could not find "cOf
ground" with the post-February exile whose members had been
desc ^
Czechoslovakists" and "quislings" by the Slovak post-war exile.

in their view on the solution to the Slovak question, the Slovak post-war
exile as a unit had been deeply isolated.
The book deals also with different attempts to reorganize and unite the
Slovak post-war exile in the
1950s
and
1960s
which were limited by several
factors including complicated relationships between groups and individuals.
The classification of individual groups can't be described as comprehensive
because there had been several changes going on inside the exile groups.
Many individuals had been influenced by various factors and had been chang¬
ing their attitudes and opinions. The book describes the military aspects of the
exile activities and activities of the security and intelligence units of the com¬
munist regime, too. They were able to track the activities of the Slovak post¬
war exile and domestic opposition and used their intelligence network very
effectively. The tendencies toward the unification of exile groups were con¬
sidered to be the sign of growing influence of former Hlinka's Slovak Peoples
Party members. As a result, communist applied concrete steps on state secu¬
rity level to track down existing
"ľudáci"
exile" basis including the activation
of intelligence networks. Those activities had their broader political context
and were related to the general situation in society, especially to the further
power limitation of the Slovak national bodies by the Czechoslovak Consti¬
tution from
1960
and subsequent demonstration of discontent in Slovakia. It
was also related to the dismal economic situation after the fall of the third five
year plan and the unsuccessful year plans from
1962
and
1963.
The differences in the Slovak exile had deepened only in the end of
1960s
when lot of exile members demanded to change the views on character of fu¬
ture Slovak state. They were considering the balance of power in international
relations and the actual political situation in Czechoslovakia after the invasion
from August
1968.
The post-August exile wave played a very important role
in this process. Slovak compatriotic organizations, especially in Canada and
USA, focused their attention to win over the new post-August exiles and tried
to use Slovak intellectuals for modernization of its anti-Czechoslovak and
anticommunist activities. The problem of unification became relevant once
again like it had been several times before. The leading forces behind those
activities were the Canadian Slovak League, Slovak League of America, Ca¬
nadian Slovak Supportive Association and the group of post-war and post-
February exiles who tried to establish principal organization for Slovaks liv¬
ing abroad. Those efforts culminated with the First Slovak World Congress
which took place in New York in June
1970
and the unification congress that
followed the next year.

The
publication
tries to describe less known chapters of the post-war his¬
tory when the decisions about future course of the Czech and Slovak society
for the several next decades had been made. The part which comprehensively
describes the problem of exile headquarters with an accent on the exile mem¬
bers from the young generation of Hlinka's Slovak People's Party connected
to the Slovak Republic and its regime can be considered as a significant asset
of the book. Apart from that it is also the analysis of the methods used for anti-
Czechoslovak activities including disagreements among various exile groups
and their leaders and the broader consequences of those contradictions. The
book includes photographs and appendixes which illustrate not only the at¬
mosphere of the era but also the activities of exile headquarters and domestic
illegal movement.
The book aims to be a contribution to the discussion about the post-war
development of the Slovak society, to deepen the knowledge about it and to
be an impulse for the further research of this very interesting period of the 20th
century history, when the decisions about the future of Czechs and Slovaks for
several decades had been made.
