The book is a demographic study of the population of the Raciborowice Parish
form the 16th to the end of the 18th century. The Raciborowice Parish was located
in north-east from Cracow. The study includes also social and economic issues, which
have not been examined before. The paper consists of five chapters. The sources used
in the book, especially the parish registers, are analysed in the introductory chapter.
In the first chapter the natural landscape of the Raciborowice Parish is presented. In
the next part the parish clergy, income of the parish, description of the church and its
equipment, presbytery, poorhouse, parish school and religious fraternities are discussed.
In the third chapter the population and the natural movement of the population are
presented. Here the following leading methods of historical demography are applied:
household structure (English school of Peter Laslett) and the family reconstruction
(French school of Henry-Goubert). Thank to this we have actual data concerning
peasant families. Several histories of such families were reconstructed from marriage
to the death of one of the spouses. It was also proved, that life of an individual
and a family had some cycles. The real age of newlyweds (not specified in the parish
registers), the number of premarital conceptions and the average number of children
in peasant families in the 18th century were determined. The analysis of natural
movement of the population enabled describing the life of parishioners from the time
of conception to death. Then the culture of giving first names and analysis of peasants
surnames are presented. Illegitimate births, geographical range of marriages, causes of
death and burial topography are also presented in the chapter. In the fourth chapter
ownership relations in the Raciborowice Parish are discussed. In the discussed Parish
the church property dominated, especially it was property of the Cracovian chapter. In
the fifth chapter the economy in the Raciborowice Parish is presented. The majority
of the inhabitants lived off the land. Rural craft also developed (mills, breweries, inns),
what was connected with the close proximity of Cracow. The peasants could get jobs
and the peasants sons were trained in crafts in the Cracow metropolis. The paper
includes also an annex. The annex consists of several parts: over one thousand of the
peasants family names (from parish registers), exemplary tables of reconstructed
families, additional tables and graphs of the natural movement of the population,
tables with traditional class structure of the local community, two genealogical tables
of rich peasant families.
