The Beginnings of News and Newspapers in the
Bohemian Lands (Until the 1790s)
The text is related to the structure of the media, the organization of news and
its role in society. The handwritten newssheets and printed newspapers regularly
widespread in the Bohemian lands were part of the pan-European news system.
These issues are examined in the area of production as well as reception. The pro¬
cess of news circulation and the appearance of regularly published weekly news¬
papers in Bohemia were tied to Prague. The analysis of the collections of weekly
handwritten newssheets of the late
ιό*
and early 17th centuries shows Prague as the
center of the news coming from Augsburg, Vienna and Wroclaw, where news from
other regions were concentrated. The handwritten Prague newsletters mediated
the news from the imperial court in Prague, from Poland and Hungary as well as
information concerning the Turkish wars. The departure of Emperor
Mathias
and
his court to Vienna in 1615 resulted in a diminishing role of Prague as to the news by
means of which the postal service of the noble family of Taxis connected southern
Europe (Rome, Venice) with Antwerp.
In the period of the uprising of the Estates and under the reign of Freder¬
ick V of the Palatinate, the news concentrated on religious circumstances, politi¬
cal and constitutional events and war issues. After the escape of King Frederick,
the handwritten newssheets became regional, which also holds true of the earliest
printed newspapers. The
Ordinari
Wöchentliche
Postţeitungen
in Prague, published
on the basis of a privilege granted to the printer
Ludmila Sedlčanská,
belongs to
first regional newspapers in the
Habsburg
monarchy. Those who, in the early
18*
century, attempted to obtain permission to issue another German newspapers in
Prague failed.
Schönwetter s
newspapers
Wienerisches Diarium was
a model for
these attempts, but K. F. Arnolt, the printer of the
Prager Post-Zeitungen,
defended
his monopoly, which he kept after
Ludmila Sedlčanská.
Nevertheless,
К.
F. Rosen¬
müller
succeeded with the Czech newspapers
Český
Posţylion
in 1719. He provided
news from abroad and from the imperial court and added information on the life
of the Bohemian nobility and Catholic church.
Rosenmüller
not only informed
about current events, but also

in accordance with the policy typical of the reign of
Charles VI
-
reminded the readership of the glorious history of the Kingdom of Bo¬
hemia and spread the cult of the Bohemian saints. However, the area of news was
soon influenced by a new type of newspapers. The so-called
Intelligenciáit,
which
according to the intentions of the economic policy of the government in Vienna
supported the dissemination of practical knowledge and commercial information,
appeared almost at the same time in Prague (1751) and Brno
(1755);
divided Silesia
did not show appropriate interest. In the further development of the newspapers
in the lands of the Bohemian Crown in the period of the centralization of the mon¬
archy (the second half of the 18th century), the old structure based on the publish¬
ers privileged within the framework of the individual lands remained functional.
In Prague in the 1770s, the privilege was defended by the printer
Ž. Klauserová
against
J.
F. Schönfeld;
in Brno, the retired officer
J.
W.
Bourscheid failed to obtain
permission to issue newspapers for the Hungarian countryside. The publishers of
the Briinner
Zeitung also
did not give consent to the existence of newspapers in

or the transfer of the newspapers from
Opava
to
Olomouc
in the event
of war. In the period of the liberalization under Joseph II, the number of newspa¬
pers substantially increased, especially in Prague. As for Brno in the
17805,
publish¬
ing activities were in a considerable measure based on the demand in Vienna, the
Austrian lands and Hungary; even attempts to cooperate with Freemasonry lodges
were successful.
The increasing quality of news and editorial work in
Schönfeld s
publishing
house guaranteed prosperity of the newspapers in Prague and protected it against
the competition from Vienna and Germany. In the 1780s, it was the editor
A. Zitte
who essentially contributed to this quality. The publishers of the
Brünner Zeitung
found subscribers in Prague and abroad and even provided direct sales in Vienna.
The newspapers in
Opava
survived only thanks to their low price. The changes in
the social structure of the readership beneficially influenced the dissemination of
newspapers. In the 1780s, the editors of the newspapers in Prague and Brno were
interested in regular mutual correspondence. This holds true of the German-lan¬
guage as well as Czech-language newspapers edited by V. M. Kramerius.
