Zusammenfassung: | This collection about the Sea Islanders, a Gullah-speaking people who live on the coast and sea islands of Georgia and South Carolina, consists of 14 documents. Four were published between 1926 and 1942, and the rest between 1973 and 2003. The studies focus on folklore and folksongs, oral histories, and language; and the main locations studied are Johns, Wadmalaw, and St. Helena's Islands, South Carolina and St. Simon's Island, Georgia. The Sea Islanders are descendents of slaves first brought to the islands in the seventeenth century. Isolated from the mainland, the Sea Islanders developed a distinct culture, which remained largely intact until the first bridges were built in the 1920s |

Isolated from the mainland, the Sea Islanders developed a distinct culture, which remained largely intact until the first bridges were built in the 1920s Sea Islanders African Americans--South Carolina--Saint Helena Island--Social life and customs Saint Helena Island (S.C.)--Social life and customs Gullahs Sea Islands Bevölkerung (DE-588)4006287-9 gnd rswk-swf Sea Islands (DE-588)4588862-0 gnd rswk-swf Sea Islands (DE-588)4588862-0 g Bevölkerung (DE-588)4006287-9 s DE-604 Moran, Mary H. 1957- Sonstige (DE-588)136222226 oth Jones-Jackson, Patricia 1946-1986 Sonstige (DE-588)170551199 oth Creel, Margaret Washington Sonstige oth Carawan, Guy 1927-2015 Sonstige (DE-588)1058068229 oth Nichols, Patricia Causey 1938- Sonstige (DE-588)134025342 oth Smith, Franklin Orion Sonstige oth Smith, Reed Sonstige oth Parrish, Lydia Sonstige oth Johnson, Guy Benton Sonstige oth Johnson, Guion Griffis Sonstige oth Guthrie, Patricia Sonstige oth Trott, Wendy Carmen Sonstige oth Human Relations Area Files, Inc Sonstige oth Georgia Writers' Project.
