Mathematics Seminary of ALL Cuza Univer¬
sity of
Iaşi,
the most prestigious Mathematics library both in Romania
and Eastern Europe, celebrates
100
years of existence. This anniversary
moment provides a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to our predece¬
ssors who set the foundation for the
Romanian School of Mathematics
which, in the first half of the twentieth century, found in
Iaşi
a fertile
ground for growth and a commitment to excellence. The

Law*of
Education, drafted by the mathematician Spiru Haret
-
a law often ci¬
ted to exemplify a job well done
-
is remarkable both for leading to
the creation of a well-balanced system of secondary education, and for
introducing an essential provision for higher education, namely that, in
universities, the didactic activity should be complemented by original
scientific and research activities.
In
1910,
Alexandru
Myller,
graduate of the University of Bucharest
and with a PhD awarded by the University of
Göttingen,
Germany, under
the tutorship of Professor David Hubert, competes for and is appointed
Professor of Analytical Geometry at the University of
Iaşi.
Trained as
researcher at the prestigious University of
Göttingen,
where he attended
the lectures of such distinguished professors as Felix Klein, David Hubert
and Hermann Minkowski,
Alexandru
Myller
realised that, in order to
produce original scientific research, a good library, featuring the both
works of great mathematicians and scholarly journals and magazines, was
desperately needed. With unrelenting enthusiasm, impressive tenacity
and through much hard work, he set up the most renowned Mathematics
Library in
the country. This famous library, which would subsequently be
named in his honour, was paramount in the development of an illustrious
School of Mathematics. Many Romanian mathematicians, who began
their careers in the first half of the twentieth century, carried out their
internship in
Iaşi
and would later become heads of departments in the
country s main universities. Most prominent among such personalities
are Dimitrie Pompeiu, Victor
Vâlcovici, Gheorghe Vrănceanu, Grigore
Moisil, Tiberiu Popoviciu, and
Constantin Popovici,
although the list is
considerably longer.
The present volume, which brings together the contributions of our
colleagues and professors, was compiled to honour both the Seminary and
its
inaugurator, Alexandru
Myller,
and those who, throughout time, have
faithfully served this institution. The first part of the volume contains
Professor Myller s memories, recorded in a series of notebooks in the
Seminary s Archives. The painstaking task of restoring and editing the
entire material in its present form was carried out by PhD Professor Mihai
Turinici. The next subchapter features a chronological presentation of
the heads of the Seminary, dedicated servants of this cultural institution.
The second part of the volume focuses on the directions of research
at the Mathematics Seminary of
Iaşi (MSI),
highlighting the outstanding
contribution of our mathematicians to the national scientific heritage.
The last chapter reunites testimonies of some of the personalities
whose spirit and creativity were nurtured by this fertile intellectual en¬
vironment.
The photo album at the end of the volume brings to memory the
faces of some of the professors who were, at various times in their lives,
members of the Seminary, also featuring a collection of photos of the
library.
We hope that this volume will instill into future generations of ma¬
thematicians not only admiration, respect and enthusiasm, but also the
desire for emulation and dedication to scientific research.
