(abstract)
There is a considerable amount of data available today on the interchange of com¬
modities taking place between peasants and serfs during the Middle Ages and the Mod¬
ern Age in the Carpathian Basin. The discipline of ethnography, in turn, has managed
to amass a lot of information with the help of recently introduced methods about as di¬
verse issues as the economic and cultural commerce between different regions, the ma¬
jor groups participating in the exchange of goods, the huge volumes of various prod¬
ucts, as well as the occasional and regular types of migrations. All this seems to indicate
that, during the past centuries, both the individuals and the communities have had
some information about the world surrounding them; i.e., the news about other ethnic
groups could, in fact, reach them with no difficulty whatsoever, together with other
pieces of information on the implements, general knowledge, and even specific ideas
and concepts shared by these peoples. In other words, they were not at the mercy of ei¬
ther their natural or their social and cultural environment, but only perhaps of the re¬
lentless passing of time. Their accommodation also involved a degree of conformation
to other groups, and the various types of connections with these constituted an integral
part of their everyday life. It is true that participation in this relationship was definitely
dependent on the given social hierarchies; yet, overall, the contacts between different
regions and ethnic groups were part and parcel of their routine existence and ordinary
culture. It seems certain that the distance from, or proximity to, the main thorough¬
fares, including the availability of railroad lines at some later stage, represented differing
degrees of chances in this respect, too. Nevertheless, I believe that the ordinary exis¬
tence of people living in the framework of conventional culture was characterised
rather by mobility and by the establishment of relationships than by isolation or by be¬
ing bound to the soil. The extent and the level of organization of this aspect of exis¬
tence was probably also one of the determining factors of the development of the indi¬
vidual groups.
The interrelated studies in the present volume discuss the traditional forms of con¬
nections between the ethnic groups and regions of the Carpathian Basin. The individual
chapters lay special emphasis upon the relationship between regions and people, thus
certifying that this historically shifting system of relationships is the chief motive behind
regional contacts. The majority of the studies focus upon the forms of economic and
cultural commerce and regional connections between the Great Hungarian Plain and
Northern Hungary, or what used to be called
Felföld
[parts of present-day Southern Slo¬
vakia and Northern Hungary], with special emphasis on social processes.

historical periods of the exchange of goods between peasants in the region, and he ex-

presses
his opinion concerning both the economic role of this social layer and the
complex economic, social, and cultural significance of the exchange of goods. He con¬
tends that the exchange

material goods is an economic activity that accompanies the
course of human history and occurs between groups of people who live in different
ecological environments but share similar basic needs, and it is realized in differing
socio-economic settings at the various levels of the development of society. It is never
simply an economic issue but, rather, also the possibility of an interaction between dif¬
ferent levels of civilization and of the interchange of intellectual and cultural goods be¬
tween individuals, and groups represented by them, who participate in this commerce.
In other words, it is a basic chance to recognize strange and unusual qualities and types
of knowledge, thus otherness and, as such, the most fundamental issue in the fields
of ethnography and ethnology.

In the concluding section of the collection (called
A vándorlások és a táji kapcsolatok
néhány hatása a hagyományos népi műveltségre
[Specific Influences of Migrations and Regional
Contacts on the Level of Traditional Folk Education]), the author points out that,
within the Carpathian Basin, one of the chief characteristics of the level of knowledge
and education for these groups of various language, lifestyle, subsistence, and cultural
backgrounds was represented by the commerce and interrelationship between them.
During the time period of the Middle Ages in Europe, commerce between these groups
was not any more hindered by the fact that they belonged to different ethnic blocks,
due partly to the regional differences between the levels and quality of production and
partly to the appearance of social and regional division of labor. Economic contacts
moved beyond the individual peoples both in the agrarian societies of the Feudal Age
and in the time period of early capitalism. One of the chief reasons for this was the
geographical determination inherent in these peoples. It is specifically true about the
larger area of Eastern and Central Europe that the individual pockets of peoples were
often separated from one another by sharp and distinct lines between natural, or at
least, phyto-geographical zones. This also seems to be one of the reasons for the fact
that an ordinary part and parcel of the life of especially the marginal groups was the
economic relationship with members of other ethnic groups. If we were to project the
ethnic make-up of the Carpathian Basin upon its geographical spatial structure, it could
be discerned without any doubt whatsoever that the basis for the popular connections
between the individual peoples was their differing ways of life and the peculiar eco¬
nomic symbiosis thereof.
