third volume of the historical monograph of Beius town
starts with a chapter about the Dictate of Vienna (from
August 30th
1940)
and the consequences it had on
Bihor
County and
especially on Beius depression. Up to
1945
Beius had became a "capital"
of the area in
Bihor
county that remained in Romania, the northern part
of this large and important county being under the horthist domination
until October 12th
1944.
In the frames of this new historical reality, for
many Romanian and Jewish citizens a few interesting aspects were
reconstituted, such as: the territorial-administrative re-organization of
Bihor
County (inside Romania), "the administration of the crisis faced by
the refugees" who arrived at Beius, the role
-
within these difficult
circumstances
-
of the Refugees House from Beius, the contribution of
Bihor
Prefect's Office at the "informing" of the German-Italian mixed
Committee about the "ordeal" suffered by the Romanians in North
Transylvania and the behavior of the ethnic minorities (especially the
Hungarians) from South
Bihor.
A consistent set of documents (many of
them new) closes this chapter, from which a painful part from the
historical existence of people called "criseni".
In the fall of
1944,
the Beius area was confronted to some
extremely severe events, one of them being the passing of German-
Hungarian troops through near Vascau, where they were stopped by
Division
3
Mountain Hunters. During those approximate five days when
they occupied this territory, the Hungarian soldiers committed a series of
dreadful things (killed defenseless persons and of course, innocent) and
robbed, as a kind of revenge against the dwellers. But, on September 22nd
1944,
Division

Mountain, helped by two Soviet divisions
(337
and
76)
and "Tudor Vladimirescu" Division who came from Transylvania,
started the action of liberating Beius (event that took place on September
22nd) and the entire
Bihor,
including
Oradea
City (on October 12th
1944).
There was also published in the volume a list with the names of all who
died in the fighting around Beius, whose bones lie in the Area of
Romanian Heroes in the Town Cemetery. It's also worth mentioning the
way in which the actions of the Romanians in solidarity with the
liberating troops are presented, from
Lunca
to
Oradea.
After these

moments,
which marked the chasing of the German-Hungarian invaders,
other unexpected facts also happened, for example the abuses (crimes, rapes
and economic robbery) of some Soviet soldiers. A whole list with the
dwellers of Beius and the losses suffered by them is included in the book,
giving a rich argument for this.
An entire chapter (the third) is destined for presenting the situation
of local organizations of some political parties, during
1944
and
1953.
In this
way we find out the specific dates regarding the activity in the South of
Bihor
of the political formations that affirmed nationally, as: The National
Peasant Party, The National Liberal Party, The Democrat Social Party, The
Communist Party from Romania, the Legionary Movement, the Patriotic
Defense, the Patriots Union, the Ploughmen Front, The Hungarian Popular
Union, the Democrat Jewish Committee, the National Popular Party, The
Union of Anti-Fascist Women of Romania, the Union of Democrat Women
of Romania, ARLUS, the young and the pioneers organization.
The elections on November 19th
1946,
falsified by the communists
represented a moment that contributed to the change of Romania's destiny.
These are presented in an adequate part, with commentaries on the electoral
strategies of the Block of Democratic Parties (among which denouncement
and denigration of the National-Peasant Leaders, who had a strong electoral
basis in the South of
Bihor).
It is then insisted on the "voting" and the ways
of its fraud. In order to emphasize such a statement, a series of documents
unknown until now were published, resulting the fact that the communist
power did what it could to "declare its victory" in these elections, against
the electorate's will.
One of the repressive measures the authorities of the democrat-
popular state adopted during this period was the dissolving of the National
Peasant Party
-
Maniu, after which followed the threats and the arresting on
those who were still hoping to stop the communists' march towards taking
the power, who, -being firmly guided from Moscow
-
constituted the main
factor in the process of turning the country Bolshevik. This was another
"victory" following the elections on March 28th
1948,
when a real
"elimination of the partners" was produced, in this way the communists
being able to take action, with no constraint, to the "socialist
transformation" of Romania. The year
1948
was a significant one, on
December 30th
1947
king Mihai was obliged to abdicate and in
1948
the
Romanian Communist Party united with the Democrat Social Party (rising
"the unique party of the working class": the Romanian Working Party) and

there were adopted laws which modified, for forty years, the economic life
of the Romanian State.
The atheist communist regime touched the spiritual life by 'adopting
a destructive politic' towards the church, starting with the orthodox and
ending with the Greek-catholic church, abolishing the latter (in
1948),
making its servants their strong enemies. The prisons were, for the first time
in our history, populated with priests (coming from all churches), but
especially those who didn't adhered to the conceptions promoted by the
political power in Bucharest, guided by the advisors corning from Moscow,
as 'experimented specialists' in communist ideology and propaganda.
It was natural for the Romanian people to oppose to this
rudimentary and anti-national way of organizing the society, according to
the Marxist-Leninist criteria, concretized in public life by a category of
parvenus, most of them uneducated and primitive. It appeared a national
resistance movement against the turning the country into Bolshevik which
had significant moments in Bthor parts. From this point of view it's worth
mentioning the group of anti-communist resistance from the South of
Bihor
(whose leader was Captain Stefan Popescu), with supporters coming from
tens of localities. The students of the two high schools in Beius wrote
beautiful lines about this phenomenon, tens of these being arrested and
sentenced to many hard years in prison (some of them sentenced to

years
of prison, executing

years before being freed in
1964,
when the
communist prisons were emptied by the political condemned). Thus, the
area of Beius integrated in the national historical flux in this field too.
The process of collectivization the agriculture, as an economic
experience initiated by the communists in
1949
and ended in
1962,
included
the depression of Beius, even if the land in this area was of 4th and 5th
categories, meaning that it was inadequate for the productivity and
efficiency in collective exploitation. The people of the regime made strong
efforts
in order to transform the agriculture, starting with making the rich
citizens poor (by imposing applied quotes which made it hard for the most
hardworking families) and then the coercive measures to make the people
enlist in collective households and partnerships.
The free development of the economy was eliminated by the state's
measures of control over it. Instead of market economy, based on free
competition (and efficiency), planned economy appeared. The realities of
the economy in Beius (during
1948
and
1989),
subject to some 'structural
changes', depending on the evolution of the Romanian socialist state, are

now rebuilt, in detail, in a whole chapter of the book (the eleventh). A
significant role was represented by the banks which functioned in Beius, the
presentation of the fair which has kept its local particularities since then.
The education and the cultural life in Beius are systematically
presented, with an emphasis on traditional elements of continuity. The most
important schools in Beius are reconsidered, followed by information about
literary societies and clubs, as well as school magazines, public libraries, the
museum, the amateurs' artistic and 'ex-libris' movements, and the activity
of adult education in the Popular University in Beius, which had the mark
of the past, but with a real contribution to the education of many citizens.
The thirteenth chapter of the book presents the religious confessions
in Beius in the communist years, with emphasis on the types of local
churches (orthodox, Greek-catholic, roman-catholic, evangelic, reformed,
Baptist and Pentecostal).

depression of Beius with a great importance (political, economical, cultural
and artistic aspects) are described in the pages of this book, as imposing and
consistent (in many circumstances with new and interesting information) as
the previous ones.

Southern area of
Bihor
County from
1940
until the present time,
recovering from the past a lot of human experiences that define the
^habitants' becoming in this area of Romania.
