SUMMARY
The Victor Y. Gankevich's (Dr. Prof.) book is devoted to the im¬
portant episode of life of the outstanding Crimean Tatar activist, educator
and humanist Ismail Gasprinsky. In the late
70s -
early
80s
of the XlXth
century, he led the municipality in the former capital of the Crimean
Khanate
—
Bakhchisarai.
In the presented book the problems of complicated political ascent
of I. Gasprinsky to the post of mayor of Bakhchisarai are depicted. He
had to suffer defeats, get the position of City Council deputy, lose the
elections for the mayor's position, win the elections of Vice-mayor and
finally become the head of the city.
In addition, the V. Gankevich's book describes the complexities
of everyday work in the municipality. Particular attention is paid to a
number of important reforms, which tripled the city budget and promoted
transformation of the municipal economy.
The author gave details of the I. Gasprinsky's hard struggle for re¬
election to the post of mayor of Bakhchisarai. In the hard struggle he lost
the elections, which was greatly impacted by the financial lobby of the
city, since its revenues were lowered in accordance with the tax reform
held by I. Gasprinsky.
The other part of the book is devoted to the legal prosecution of
I. Gasprinsky by the financial lobbies of Bakhchisarai. It tells of the
difficult years of struggle for the good name of I. Gasprinsky. This
struggle was successful; all the charges of the city treasury embezzling
were completely removed.
The last part of the book by V. Gankevich tells how I. Gasprinsky
advocated the development of municipal government among the Muslim
co-religionists in the Russian Empire in the late XlXth century.
The book is intended for researchers, students and anyone interested
in the history of Crimea and Crimean Tatars. |
