AND THE ACADEMY
DICTIONARY
(Abstract)
In the key-note speech entitled The Academy Dictionary ,
held by Sextil Puscariu in
1926,
he stated: The history of the dictionary
making provides a miniature image of the main directions of our cultural
evolution in itself . Since then, over
80
years have passed and the hard
work on The Dictionary of the Romanian Language {The Academy
Dictionary) from the beginning of the 19th century, taken consciously
over by Sextil Puscariu at the beginning of the
20*,
has come to a partial
end, but not to an end.
The entries and words edited and published between
1907
and
1913,
and many more years after that, will be taken again and completed
in the near future. The publication of a Thesaurus implies an immense
scientific and financial effort. In
1999,
the members of the Romanian
Academy, Marius
Sala
and G.
Mihăilă,
signed a Foreword to the entry
Z (Tome IV). Since then, researchers have been working and they are
still working in the three Institutes of Linguistics in the country to finish
and accomplish the project. The two above mentioned members of the
Romanian Academy resume their Foreword with a sentence that was,
is and will be everlasting: The Romanian Language Dictionary (RLD),
a huge collective work, accomplished under the auspices of the
Romanian Academy, was and still is one of the main objectives of all
Academic Cultural Forums of all countries . The two authors,
outstanding personalities in linguistics, assume and confirm as well that:
Keeping the most of the working principles established by Sextil
Puscariu, changed and amplified by the modernization of the Romanian
lexicography, they have resumed and continued the activity in the three
research institutes mentioned above .
The present book is organized in eight chapters and is founded
on a selected bibliography. Some of the mentioned entries have been for
long worked up, with some others research work was accomplished in
tbe midst of the last century (the 20th).

In the first chapters (I, II, III), attempts are presented, some of
them accomplished (A.T. Laurian, I.C.Massim), but also B.P.Hasdeu
and Al.Philippide s
aproposals,
left in preliminary research stages. The
rVth Chapter, much more complex, is addressed to Sextil Puscariu. We
have started from the published bibliography, in particular from the
studies on the topic of The Dictionary and, especially, on The
Memoires
of the Literary Department of the Romanian Academy since
1869
to the Present , signed by professor Sextil Puscariu. Our emphasis
falls on Sextil Puscariu
s
contribution, that is a section in which we have
insisted upon studies referring to The Dictionary and to the polemics
with Ovid Densusianu and
AI. Philippide.
In order to reach a complete understanding of this stage and the
period of time of some decades, we have decided to draw up a chart
containing the order of the dictionary publication with the involved
authors and collaborators. Another list contains the names of authors
and collaborators from the Institute of Linguistics in Bucharest,
Cluj
and
Iassy.
We have also thought to be necessary to attach a selective
bibliography to our work, an Index and two abstracts, in French and in
English.
We are fully aware about the complexity of this topic and that
any other additional information cannot be but welcome.
