DOROHOBUZH
ON THE HORYN RIVER IN THE 10th-13tb cc.
Memorial objects of Dorohobuzh, which was first mentioned in
the chronicles in about
1084,
were drawn to the attention of researchers
already in the 19th
с
They were investigated by
O.A.
Fotynskyi in
1901,
by P.O. Rapport in
1901,
and by V.V. Aulih in
1968.
During
1972-1980
the rescuing archeological expeditions organized by the Rivne Local Lore
Museum and headed by Y.M. Nikolchenko were held on the gorodishche
(hillfort). The main archeological findings were discovered in the course of
the archeological excavations performed by the author of this book in
1982-
2003.
The largest in terms of the scope investigations were performed on the
ditynets (inner or upper town) on the area of about
1,400
sq m. The areas of
the okolnyi
hrad
(180
sq m) and of the
posad
(360
sqm) were also examined.
The settlements near Uspenska Church in the village of Dorohobuzh and in
the villages of Ryasynky and Podolyanky were also investigated.
Stratigraphie
observations on Dorohobuzh Gorodishche allowed
separating the layers of Kyivan
Rus,
which include the lower and the upper
horizons. Forty-five residential and household buildings and forty-two pits
for different purposes that were investigated in this place were dated back
to five construction periods.

The discovered remnants of the buildings allow analyzing the typical
characteristics of the buildings and the planning of the town s development
in the Kyivan
Rus
epoch. Dwelling places of the first and the second
construction periods were half-dugouts; the walls were mainly of a frame
and pillar construction type; the stoves were located in one of the corners
and were made of clay or of clay and stone, which were also discovered in
the stove, carved out in the ground. We came across niche stoves, carved out
outside of the boundaries of the trench. Starting from the third construction
period, above-ground houses with pise stoves came into existence; some
of them had basements or storage cellars (pidklit).
A certain planning scheme can be traced in the arrangement of
synchronous houses. The houses were located at some

each other and were surrounded by the household buildings and p^The

At the end of the lOMl* cc. the settlement has spread to the south and
east of the fortress. The area of the
posad
regions reached
6-8
ha. The settlement
near Uspenska Church was formed around the same time. In the second half of
the
12Ш-Ље
first half of the
13*
cc, the fortified partsof Dorohobuzh occupied
the area of about
5.5
ha, whereas the total area was app.
30
ha.
Various crafts were being developed in Dorohobuzh: blacksmithing,
goldsmithing and jewelry making, bone carving, and pottery making. The
discovered household tools indicate trade and cultural connections with
Kyiv and Middle Dnieper area, with the Nothern Black Sea Area, Northern
Rus,
and the Baltic Lands.
Various weapons and objects of the horseman outfit, which were
discovered in the complexes of the third-fifth construction periods, allow
drawing a conclusion that the owners of the houses were people from the
drujyna (noble horsemen) of the Old
Rus
society. They performed military
and administrative duties. Lead seals from the gorodishche illustrate the
activity of knyaz administration.
Cult objects from Dorohobuzh allow tracing the processes of the
dissemination of Christianity from the second half- the end of the 11th

However, in the everyday life, the population combined Christian ideology
with remnants of pagan beliefs. Already in the 12th c, a monastery with
Uspenska Church existed on the south-western outskirts of the town. As
discovered in the course of the archeological investigations, the church made
of brick-plinfa was erected in the

s of the 12th
с.
One of the consequences
of the establishment of Christianity in Pogorynnya was the appearance
and the dissemination of literacy among local people. Writing tools were
discovered in ditynets in all investigated houses in the complexes of the
end of the

the first half of the

cc.
The discovered characteristic features of the first stage of the
development of Dorohobuzh allow considering this memorial place as
the fortress of Kyivan princes. The objects of the second stage evidence a
gradual development of the settlement, which can be defined as a prince s
castle-fortress, administrative center of the region, and the center of the
feudal landownership.
Anew rise of the settlement in the third stage (the end of the

the
middle of the
Iz 1 cc.)
is due to its allocation as the center of the regional
princedom to David Ihorevych. Substantial works to reconstruct the
ditynets were performed: the fortification was renewed, new residential and
household buildings were built, a well was dug out. Archeological sources
of this period allow identifying the key features of an Old
Rus
town.
Storage cellars and grain pits, various weapons, horseman outfit and
horse equipment objects, treasuries, containing silver and gold jewelries,
household tools were discovered alongside the houses on the territory of
the ditynets of the fourth and the fifth stages of Dorohobuzh development
in the second half of the 12th
-
the first half of the
13*
cc. These findings
show that the interests of landlords,
boyars,
and warriors from drujyna laid
outside the town, in the agricultural region, where their lands were located.
