The monograph entitled Polish passion songs of the age of the Middle Ages and
the 16th century

genesis, interpretation, execution in the context Lectio
divina
is
a description of musical and verbal contents, moments and aspects which have
a significant influence on interpretation and an execution of chosen passion songs,
which system was based on basic in the Middle Ages for spiritual practice of the
Christian life

sion songs

Middle Ages and sixteenth century.
The above-mentioned Polish passion songs are hymns, which are intended to
sing and describe all the elements that relate to the passion and death of Jesus
Christ, and whose source is the text of the four New Testament Gospels of Matthew,
Mark, Luke and John. Mentioned songs are Polish not only because of Polish lan¬
guage, but also because of fact that have been known and performed on Polish
lands.
However, as indicated in the title duration

the Middle Ages and the sixteenth
century
-
arises out of fact, that middle ages on Polish earth are divided into three
periods and embraces time from tenth century to fifteenth century. The first pe¬
riod, as a phase of absolute dominance of the Latin language, falls on the ten and
twelve centuries. The second period, including the thirteenth and fourteenth cen¬
turies, a time of rapid development of domestic creativity of native authors. While
the third period, mainly fifteenth century is the age at which occurred the eman¬
cipation of the Polish language.
Despite the awareness that the sixteenth century is a time of full flowering of
the Renaissance, it also appears in the title. The reason is that, in Cracow was still
printed and published the medieval songs and at Franciscans collections of manu¬
scripts with traditional hymns was still created.
At the choice of separate songs, important was for the author not only dating,
but also among others: contents of monument, its typical form, style, imaging, cir¬
cle of recipients.

Summary
The monograph consists of three chapters titled in turn: Mystery of the passion
and death of Jesus Christ of spirituality in the Polish Middle Ages and the sixteenth
century; The genesis and development of Polish passion songs to the sixteenth century
and The interpretation and execution of Polish passion songs in the context of Lectio
divina.
The content of the first chapter shows the genesis and development of the wor¬
ship in the Christian tradition and its directions of the development in the Polish
spirituality of the Middle Ages and the sixteenth century, described the events
of artistic, religious and political, presented in this chapter from the time of early
Christianity until the Council of Trent and the emergence of the Reformation,
to help in the meaning of artworks, which are Polish passion songs.
The second chapter describes the beginning of the Polish passion song and
its culturally and major forms of literary and ritual. With reference to the literature
presents different concepts of the polish religious songs creation, basic form of
this kind compositions and shows the development of Polish language, achieved
by actions of Polish clergy.
The third chapter contains content that make up the scientific, musicologi-
cal, artistic and religious basis for the interpretation and performing Polish passion
songs of the Middle Ages and the sixteenth century in the context of Lectio
divina.
This chapter is the result of a complex cognitive process of verbal and musical layer
of selected six passion songs.
In this monograph the author clearly points out that despite of made multi¬
directional effort (which contains analysis of medieval literature, professional
literature relating the performance of early music and the analysis of already made
recordings of medieval passion songs), it became clear that there is no ready-made
regulations , which indicate the only and right way to achieve the greatest ultimate
interpretation and performance. Their realization is and always be dependent on
the interplay of many different circumstances, that make the interpretation and
performance of Polish passion songs of the age of Middle Ages and the sixteenth
century individual.
