Landowner's manor from Studzieniec
in the exposition of the
Wielkopolska
Ethnographic Park
Summary
The manor and home farm complex with residential and farming build¬
ings is the compositional element of the village reconstructed in the
Wiel¬
kopolska
Ethnographic Park. The skeleton of this complex consists of the
manor, two accompanying outbuildings, and a chapel located in the middle
of a vast park with the lawns, short-mown plants, avenues of hornbeam trees,
and a broad avenue leading to the manor. The composition was designed fol¬
lowing the example of the typical baroque architectural and spatial layout that
had been popular in Greater Poland during the Saxon era. Objects making up
the manor complex are copies of the buildings protected in situ: the manor
-
in Studzieniec near
Rogoźno
and outbuildings
-
in
Łomnica
near
Zbąszyń.
Whereas the chapel, situated on the line of the manor, in the northern end
of the complex, is an original timber construction translocated to the muse¬
um from
Otłoczyn
near
Aleksandrów Kujawski.
The whole area is enclosed
by the board fence based on the brick underpinning with the pillars looking as
ifit
were in the typical Greater Polish countryside of the 19th century.
The exhibition programme of the complex was accomplished on two
levels: outside as the architectural and spatial layout, and inside as an illustra¬
tion of the lifestyle of a typical landed gentry family in the beginning of the
20th century. The inner exposition concerns the manor only. The structure,
built in the museum between
1984
and
1986,
is a one-storey building with
a usable attic, covered with the shingled mansard roof. Corners of the garden
elevation were extended into the four-sided buildings. These corner annexes
are covered with the separate mansard roofs, each of them with the chimney
in the middle. Inside, the two sections along the length of the building recre¬
ate the symmetrical baroque composition with the axis of an entrance hall and
the drawing room. The construction was rebuilt in imitation of the baroque
structure raised around
1760
in the village of Studzieniec, in the northern
Greater Poland. The building in Studzieniec had been preserved in almost
unchanged condition until the
1970s.
Arranging the manor interiors in the museum took a dozen years or so.
The period can be divided into two stages. First, between
1986
and
1996,
the manor together with its two outbuildings was adapted for the adminis¬
trative and residential purposes of the museum; the exposition was limited
to the drawing room and the dining room. Doings connected with adjusting
the building to the administrative needs determined the way of recreating
many architectural elements of the object including: the interior layout, win¬
dow frames, wood flooring as well as heating system. Second stage began
after
1996
after the administration of the museum had left the manor. Actions

aiming at restoring the building to the architectonic form of the original manor
as well as at presenting the interior as the typical landed gentry family resi¬
dence were undertaken at that moment. First of all the baroque arrangement
of living quarters was restored and the heating system was supplied with
the tiled stoves. The schedule of the furnishings and the interior design was
elaborated on the basis of three sources
ofinformation.
First, not numerous re¬
maining archival materials concerning the Tomaszkiewicz family
-
last users
of the manor in Studzieniec, next, of the memories of the family descendants,
and last but not least, of the documentation of the Studzieniec manor compiled
in the
1930s
by
Wiktor Gosieniecki,
a painter, graphic artist and restorer then
living in
Poznan.
The descriptions placed in the memoirs and in the subject
literature as well as in archival illustrative materials were also particularly
useful in the work. Thanks to the collected materials, the Tomaszkiewiczs
can be defined as the typical large landed gentry family living in the com¬
mon household. The main source of income of the family consisted of profits
from the landed estate and from the additional occupation of the estate owner
-
the lawyer by profession in this case. The Tomaszkiewicz family lifestyle
makes up the basic social background of the exhibition being carried out.
All the interiors were furnished with the all-purpose artefacts collected from
various places all over Greater Poland. Hence, as far as possible objective
image of the interior used in the
1
920s by a typical landed gentry family was
achieved. The project of the interior expositional development is still be¬
ing carried out as the principle has been accepted that furnishing an interior,
regardless of place and time, is a permanent process.
